Yuck to modern music

I sometimes think that if I am forced to listen to Jordan Sparks "Battlefield" or Demi Lovato shout at me one more time I might actually keel over. Pop is like one big infomercial for whatever corporation is footing the bill for the so called artist's career.

This thread has reminded my why I don't listen to the radio and just listen to music or podcasts on my MP3 player. I don't have to listen to the same 40 songs (39 of which I can't stand) being looped 3 at a time between commercials for crap I neither want not need.

Viva la <Insert French word for MP3 player>.

I agree that most of the stuff that makes the radio is pretty much garbage and can't wait for auto-tune to go the way of the synthesizer. There has always been garbage from every era of music though, I would put almost every hair band in the same category.

The reason I think we look back on past eras of music is that, for the most part, the good music has survived down through the years while the crap was filtered out. In 20 years there will be people saying modern music sucks and the stuff from the early 2010's was so much better. What will make the cut I can't predict but it will happen.

Already happened:

YES! I have liked them since their album came out back in August 2008 in the UK. I have seen and met them a couple of times, and they are the nicest and sweetest guys. It's so nice to be able to go to a concert and it sounds even better than the CD. I whole heartedly agree about them! (as well as most of your other recommendations!)

I've never met anyone else who knows them! I spent last year in Ireland and fell in love with them. I'm so jealous that you met them - they seem extremely sweet. I am hoping I can catch them the next time they come to NYC.

When I first heard them on the radio after I got back to NY I almost drove off the road I was so excited. I have heard them more on the radio recently, so maybe they will get the recognition they deserve.

By the way, what is Auto-Tune?

This is from wikipedia:

Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies. Auto-Tune uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise off-key inaccuracies and mistakes, and has allowed singers to perform perfectly tuned vocal tracks without the need of singing in tune. While its main purpose is to slightly bend sung pitches to the nearest true semitone (to the exact pitch of the nearest tone in traditional equal temperament), Auto-Tune can be used as an effect to distort the human voice when pitch is raised or lowered significantly.

Cher's song "Believe" uses it a lot
Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" also uses it

Since when did VH1 go back to playing music? ;):lmao::confused3

They play more music than MTV ever will again.

I've liked Evanescence, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Three Doors Down, Shinedown, Thrice along with the "popular crap". :)

I'm not an "old fart" by any means when it comes to music. Like many of you, I think I'm pretty open-minded. I like to rock, I like a good melody. Whatever. But there is just something about today's music that is beyond irritating and I think my 13 year old (spending his snowday watching VH1) just summed it up perfectly. "Modern music is just SO boring."

Yep, that's it. The new "singer/songwriters" produce no memorable melodies (ala Elton, Billy, Jackson Browne, etc.). The rockers rarely actually rock (like where are the great guitar solos?), IMO. And the pop stars manage to do neither.

Maybe I am an old fart, but there is at least one young man who agrees with me, bless him:goodvibes.

I do hold out some hope...Vampire Weekend is interesting, Cage the Elephant is FUN (going to see them on Sat.) James Morrison has a neat voice, but his tunes still kinda bore me. Los Lonely Boys are amazing, but not popular. Any other suggestions?

Let's see here:

Ingrid Michaelson
Lady Gaga
Jay-Z
Regina Spektor
A Fine Frenzy
Matt & Kim
Nicki Minaj :rotfl:
Amanda Blank
Stereo Total
Leslie and the Ly's
Lenka
Feist
The K-o's
The Ting Tings
Modest Mouse
Lykke Li
Santigold
Kaela Kimura
Utada Hikaru
Yael Naim
Justice
Yelle
M.I.A.

I just threw in a little bit of everything in there, well not country, I've tried so hard to like it... but everything else. Give them all a listen and see if you like them :)

My DS16 really likes Davy Knowles and Derek Trucks, too. I have to agree with both of those. Davy Knowles and his group (Back Door Slam) is blues/rock. I love his voice and he is an awesome guitar player. He's from the Isle of Man. The Derek Trucks Band is a blend of different music and pretty cool, too. Their singer, has an awesome voice as well.

I don't know most of them (although I might recognize their music- right before I turn it over) I hate Gaga- Jayz- Regina Spector and I LOATHE M.I.A she is a talentless hack.

Haha, I have eclectic music tastes. I love the "crap" on the radio now but I also love 80's, 90's, 00's, classic rock, and finding my own fave indie type music. A lot of times I find new music from stupid things like commercials, movies, and TV shows.

For example maybe a year or two ago a Swedish (i think) band called the Ting Tings had a hit song on the radio. Then I found one of their songs playing on the VS fashion show. Then another song playing on The City. I downloaded just about every song of theirs I could find and I adore them. Same thing happened for me with Paramore. Heard their song Misery Business and downloaded a bunch of stuff which all turned out to be kick butt.

Someone mentioned the Twilight soundtrack. I LOVE just about everything on there....could be because I love the books/movies too...:rotfl2: But I can't help liking the music too, esp the songs from Blue Foundation, Muse, Iron & Wine, and the Black Ghosts.

Now, keep in mind that shortly after, I downloaded a bunch of crap that included Ke$ha, the Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z, and Timbaland. :rotfl:

Oh, the Silversun Pickups are great too.

I'm a lot like you honestly... very eclectic tastes in music. All you would have to do is see my last.fm channel and it would be obvious. I enjoy all kinds of music (except rap and r&b) and I don't really care what anyone says about it.

Here is a small sample:
Within Temptation
Local H
Nirvana
Lady Gaga
Bon Jovi
Aerosmith
Carrie Underwood
Garmarna
Garbage
In Extremo
Kellie Pickler
Sugarland
Black Eyed Peas
Katy Perry
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Rammstein
Pink

And that is only about half of what is on my station. Needless to say, no one can say that something is no good... it is only to that person an opinion. What one person hates another person loves. All generations will have good music and bad music... some will survive and some will not. What's the big deal? You don't like it, don't listen to it... but leave it alone for those who enjoy what you don't.

I don't think the OP was trying to get the current radio station playlists banned... LOL This is merely a conversation about music styles... and trends.

You hate Regina Spektor? WOW you're the first one I've ever seen literally. I've heard people that say they don't like her, but never hate... I just love her so much. She's my all time favorite artist :(

M.I.A. is talentless? Have you listened to any other song besides Paper Planes? Her songs have such a deep meaning, most of them, and her sound is totally unique!

OIC @ right before I turn it over... dismissing my taste much? No one artist is like another, in general, on that list. Santigold is a bit like M.I.A., but other than that most of them have not much in common. The ones you haven't heard of, well I would try them. Whenever I see that someone likes an artist I haven't heard of, I immediately listen.

I'm still confused on how someone can hate Regina...

Some more to add to the list:

Imogen Heap
Ladyhawke
Immortal Technique (Dance with the Devil made me cry, such a great song)
Marina and the Diamonds

Her voice is like nails on a chalk board to me! :scared1:

Of course it's the music I hate- not the people.

Have any suggestions for some MIA songs I should listen to? (ones with deep meaning and real musical instruments and singing- not rapping.)

Oh yeah of course, I know that

IMO she's the best singer ever to walk the face of the earth. She has a huge range, and isn't afraid to take risks with her voice.

Isn't it funny how people can like and dislike things? Guess that's what makes the world go round!

You have to see them live! I saw them back in August at Webster Hall and then this past December at Terminal 5. They are coming back to the States this week!

I was in the car with my Aunt the other day and she calls them "the band that got you VIP" (but that's a whole different story). They came on the radio and I got really excited for them. Also! I was in Roosevelt Field last weekend and they were playing the video for Breakeven. Again, I got really excited.

When they came here in December, I was legit the first person on line. I FROZE. You need to see them live, they are amazing.

Some of you sound like my parents used to. Actually I'm supposed to sound like my parents now. ;)

I didn't like much in the years 2000-2005. Then music started to improve IMO.

Someone mentioned metal not being dead. I like a few more mainstream metal bands too like Slipknot and Disturbed. And bless Metallica, still rocking away.

OP try My Morning Jacket. Great band, great sound. Saw them live, even better in concert. :goodvibes

I have to agree with most people here. The majority of main stream music in the past decade or so has been wretched.

However like most I've also dug deep enough to find some bands and artists that really do put out quality and often unique work.

Jason Mraz-If you're a fan of singer/song writers you simply cannot miss with this guy. He's the real deal and I've yet to listen to a song of his I disliked.

The Gaslight Anthem-A New Jersey band that takes its cue from Springsteen. Just a great rock band...and actual ROCK band!

The Apples in Stereo-You can't really describe these guys. I do suggest everyone check them out though.

Kings of Leon-Love them!

Well you don't have to "buy it" - it's just my opinion. I find the new popular music to be boring and lacking musicianship.

I like the crap that was produced in the 80s :laughing:

Thanks to everyone who is suggesting the neat, alternative music. I'm just wondering aloud why the radio people insist on playing such nonsense.

We can agree that the lesser-known modern music can be pretty nifty, but nobody will remember it in 20 years because few people even know about it now.

Who is today's version U2? Elton John, Billy Joel? Rolling Stones? See what I mean?

I think your initial post gives the impression that you think modern music, in general, is worse than older music.

That's a lot different than saying you don't like the current pop music on the radio. But IMO, most "pop" music has always sucked, whether it's now or the 70s or 80s or 90s.
