Yuck to modern music

ok here are the songs/artists that get the most play on my iPod that probably don't on the radio:

Ben Folds
Ben Harper
Brandi Carlisle
Citizen Cope
Dropkick Murphys (Irish rock)
Eric Hutchinson
Flogging Molly (more Irish)
The Honarary Title
Iron & Wine
The Killers - they have great stuff that doesn't get a lot of radio play
Matthew Ryan
Nada Surf
Oasis
The Script - I am absllutely in love with this band right now. Please listen to them immediately!
Wakey!Wakey! - Their song Brooklyn is beautiful. I'm going to link it at the end of this post cause it needs a listen right away.
The Weepies

Ok I hope that gives you some ideas! There are a lot of great bands out there, you just have to search for them.

I was listening to "I Can't Explain" by The Who as I was reading this thread and thinking, "Would 'The Who' get signed to a record deal today? Would 'I Can't Explain' get played on the radio?"

Seems like good music died several years ago. And yes, I realize I sound like what my Dad sounded like when he heard the stuff I listened to growing up. :)

Ooh.. Lots of suggestions but it really depends on your preferences. Avoid radio at all costs. I'd recommend Bishop Allen, Neko Case, The New Pornographers, but you can check the links for yourself. Of course, you may think they're crap as some of my friends do. Hope you like at least 1 or 2. Here's a few of my favorites (some of the videos are insanely funny, some are just weird):

There's no reason someone over 30, 40, or 50 can't like new music. There is quite a bit of good new music out there and a number of great suggestions on this thread. As far as finding this quality stuff on mainstream media, you can pretty much forget it.

Your fellow Dis-ers will help, there are plenty of places to check on the web, and if you like music mags, check one out called Paste.

Don't give up on finding new music.:)

Sorry, I don't buy it.
The music being made today is no better or worse than music being made 30 years ago.

Maybe your tastes simply don't match what is currently getting the most airplay on radio stations and getting the most press on MTV, etc.

The only reason people think that older music was so much better is because the crappy older music doesn't stay popular and keep getting airtime. So when you hear new music on the radio, you are hearing the good and the bad, but when you listen to music from 30 years ago, you are only hearing the best stuff from that era.

Seriously, just look at some of the crap that was produced in the '80s.

You won't get an argument from me OP. I like music with meaning (words that you can understand are nice- and it's nice if it isnt' *bleeped*).

As you can see from my signature- Jackson Browne is my favorite. His 70's stuff (Late for the Sky, Pretender etc) is FABULOUS- and most of it wasn't played on the radio. :thumbsup2

I'd agree with this and the earlier comment that in 30 years people will look back and miss the good ol'day of music back in 2010.

Well you don't have to "buy it" - it's just my opinion. I find the new popular music to be boring and lacking musicianship.

I like the crap that was produced in the 80s :laughing:

Thanks to everyone who is suggesting the neat, alternative music. I'm just wondering aloud why the radio people insist on playing such nonsense.

We can agree that the lesser-known modern music can be pretty nifty, but nobody will remember it in 20 years because few people even know about it now.

Who is today's version U2? Elton John, Billy Joel? Rolling Stones? See what I mean?

Haha, I have eclectic music tastes. I love the "crap" on the radio now but I also love 80's, 90's, 00's, classic rock, and finding my own fave indie type music. A lot of times I find new music from stupid things like commercials, movies, and TV shows.

For example maybe a year or two ago a Swedish (i think) band called the Ting Tings had a hit song on the radio. Then I found one of their songs playing on the VS fashion show. Then another song playing on The City. I downloaded just about every song of theirs I could find and I adore them. Same thing happened for me with Paramore. Heard their song Misery Business and downloaded a bunch of stuff which all turned out to be kick butt.

Someone mentioned the Twilight soundtrack. I LOVE just about everything on there....could be because I love the books/movies too...:rotfl2: But I can't help liking the music too, esp the songs from Blue Foundation, Muse, Iron & Wine, and the Black Ghosts.

Now, keep in mind that shortly after, I downloaded a bunch of crap that included Ke$ha, the Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z, and Timbaland. :rotfl:

Oh, the Silversun Pickups are great too.

I'm not an "old fart" by any means when it comes to music. Like many of you, I think I'm pretty open-minded. I like to rock, I like a good melody. Whatever. But there is just something about today's music that is beyond irritating and I think my 13 year old (spending his snowday watching VH1) just summed it up perfectly. "Modern music is just SO boring."

Yep, that's it. The new "singer/songwriters" produce no memorable melodies (ala Elton, Billy, Jackson Browne, etc.). The rockers rarely actually rock (like where are the great guitar solos?), IMO. And the pop stars manage to do neither.

Maybe I am an old fart, but there is at least one young man who agrees with me, bless him:goodvibes.

I do hold out some hope...Vampire Weekend is interesting, Cage the Elephant is FUN (going to see them on Sat.) James Morrison has a neat voice, but his tunes still kinda bore me. Los Lonely Boys are amazing, but not popular. Any other suggestions?

Since when did VH1 go back to playing music? ;):lmao::confused3

Talk about being an old fart, I'm stuck in the 60's, very early 70's & yes, the late 50's too. I haven't a clue as to most of the names of groups/singers today. And I don't quite creak yet but I'll be needing some oil soon.

I was just thinking this today. I rarely listen to my radio because I can't stand any of the new music, and my kids don't like the radio. "Turn The Page" came on, and all I could think was they don't make music like that any more. I could even remember the concert we went to at Cobo Hall...the sax player at that concert came out through the audience. He used to come out in unique areas of the concert halls when Bob Seeger and the Silver Bullet band played.

Other than Jackson, Bob, The Eagles, Billy, and Elton, I have not even heard of one other singer/group mentioned on this thread. That's OK, my old guys did plenty of good work years ago, and it's all on CD's.

The Script - I am absllutely in love with this band right now. Please listen to them immediately!

YES! I have liked them since their album came out back in August 2008 in the UK. I have seen and met them a couple of times, and they are the nicest and sweetest guys. It's so nice to be able to go to a concert and it sounds even better than the CD. I whole heartedly agree about them! (as well as most of your other recommendations!)

I AM an old fart. I haven't liked much of the music since the bands became groups of guitars instead of the old orchestra instruments.

By the way, what is Auto-Tune?

Angels and Airwaves. They're my absolutely favorite band, and I'm nearly 17 BTW. They're kind of U2/The Cure infused. I <3 them!
