Because they enjoy it? People put a value on everything they do, including going to Disney.
If someone feels it's worth spending money to see a sporting event live, thats on them. You seem awfully judgemental on how others spend their money.

I've stuck with cable/TiVo, probably 40 years now (about 25 years for the TiVo component). Streaming can get so complicated and often winds up same cost, or more. I'm very comfortable with tech, including TV, but when I go to Vince's house and want to watch some TV, I tell him what I want to watch and he figures it out, oftentimes he even has trial and error to get the channel.

When we moved here 4 years ago the only cable/internet wired option was Comcast/Xfinity. They were very expensive and not very reliable. I was thrilled when Verizon came in with Fios last year and we could use that for Internet and switch to YouTube TV. Much less expensive and better service.

Disney appears to be losing $30 million per week and the loss will distinctly affect earnings.

Google, with the $20 monthly rebate, would lose $200 million per month minus the amount they pay Disney and minus the amount of people who do not claim the rebate (the rebate has to be actively claimed and is not automatically refunded.)

Based on numbers alone Disney is likely losing more in the short term. However, that does not tell the entire story. Youtubetv is a financial rounding error for Google. It is 2% of Disney's earnings. Everyone is losing here, but Google can wait this out much longer than Disney. No one wins.

Can YT subscribers not separately subscribe to Disney+/ESPN? Then only the ABC stations would be "lost".

How many people subscribe to YT Live vs Hulu vs Cable/Sate vs OTA? Subscribers want their shows. If a provider leaves them off for too long, that subscriber is going to go somewhere else. ESPECIALLY when there's no contract locking you in (like has been the case for cable/sat).

BTW, $30M/week * 4 weeks in a month = $120M. Even discounting how much YT pays Disney and folks that don't take the rebate (and is it a one time thing or every month), I'm not convinced Disney loses more. Anyone who leaves YT and goes to another service means Disney gets their money.

How often do you go to Disney? Where do you stay? Unless you're only going once every five years and staying at All Stars, if not off property, someone could say you're "wasting money".

It however doesn't put a number on it.

However if Disney can keep these people on one of these services they will likely come out ahead and if they own the content the likely hood of them pulling it is fairly unlikely.

We have YouTubeTV and are waiting it out. We did watch the local morning news on the ABC channel. It's been tough adjusting to the other stations and I've finally found one I can deal with. When this is over I will switch back to the ABC station though. There were only a few ABC programs I watched and that was mostly due to nothing else on that interested me. DH hasn't missed ESPN enough to go elsewhere yet. He is able to keep up with his teams enough do far. If this continues much longer he may end up subscribing to ESPN but we'll see.

We watched a lot of ABC but none of the ESPN. Since mom needs her shows I did upgrade my Disney+ for Hulu which I was already contemplating prior so they were already getting my money anyway. We've liked the YouTubeTV interface better so wish they'd bring back ABC at least. D+ print is too small. She just might watch less or we'll end up watching more CBS/NBC shows so we don't have to switch apps.

Well, the commercials do help pay for the broadcast.

As far as "continuous clock", that's sports specific and has nothing to do with the broadcast.

We're just waiting it out. We have Disney+ and Hulu, so that helps a bit. We do typically watch the local ABC news, but we can get that on the app on our Roku TVs. For the shows I like to watch (Grey's Anatomy, General Hospital, and a few others) I just watch them on Hulu later that day or the next day. Dancing with the Stars is live on Disney+, so I watch it there. We also have an old antenna in our attic that my husband spent about an hour tweaking to pick up ABC OTA on 2 of our TVs. Sometimes that works great -- looks as good as the streaming feed and other times it doesn't pick up any signal or is so spotty it drives me nuts (though my husband will sit and watch it even if he's only getting every 10th word or so and the picture is full of dead spots). We were able to watch most of Monday Night Football OTA with that antenna. If this goes on much longer, I'll probably do a 1 month subscription to Hulu Live or Fubo. I'm sure as soon as I do that, YTTV and Disney will settle their dispute and everything will be back on YTTV.

Your husband has probably already tried, but make sure the cable & connectors all the way from the antenna to the TV are in good shape. If that doesn't work, you might need an amplifier (preferably closer to the antenna if possible).

Even other live events such as the news and presidential debates have commercials at some point during the broadcast.

State of the union and other speeches are given an amount of time but the president could certainly go over that if he/she wishes.
