This week it is our time to host the youth group summer night. It will be about 3 teens from 7th to 12th grade. Usually we open our pool, play gaga, volleyball, smores, etc. But this year it is supposed to rain :(

This winter I had a movie night for them and we watched Evan Almighty. I stopped the movie and we had a trivia contest thru out the movie with prizes. It was so much fun!!

I am looking for ideas another movie. I was leaning towards the original Herbie movies.

Any other suggestions??

Thanks!

It might be fun to show some "classic" films. Perhaps some that the kids might not even heard of:

Breaking Away
Hoosiers
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Princess Bride
The Sandlot

Facing the Giants. It's a football movie but has a good Christian story. We showed it last year during youth

How about Wild America? That was one of my kids favorites for a long time.
Other ideas might be,
Freaky Friday (either version)
National Treasure (either one)
The Day After Tomorrow
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Secondhand Lions
Any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

Good luck!

I would absolutely go with National Treasure.

It is fun, full of history, adventure, and keeps you watching until the very end. They might even learn a little something! ;)

Try Apollo 13. I have shown this to my juniors and seniors for the last 4 years during AP week. They are facinated with this.

Great Ideas! I love National Treasure! Could do a lot with trivia with that one too!!
Facing the Giants we have done before, The Princess Bride was also done with the girls, although it is a favorite.

Would National Treasure 1 be too intense for young (7th graders) kids? I haven't seen it in a while.

Thanks for the help!!

My DD watched it in one of her classes last year when she was in 7th grade. She said the whole class loved it and they also did lots of "trivia" with it. Even my DS5 enjoys watching it on family movie night.

There's a great movie called The Ultimate Gift It's a fantastic film about a young (cute!) spoiled guy whose grandfather teaches him about what's really important in life.

It's got a great cast, Drew Fuller (from Charmed) Abigail Breslin, James Garner. Really well done and definitely appropriate for that age. My daughter also in 7th grade loved it. It's a great opener for discussing life choices, and priorities in a fun way.

Loved the movie Joshua, it was shown at a family night one time.

The Ultimate Gift looks okay too.

Any other suggestions? We like to :think outside the box" and show how stories can be tied to biblical basics. My DH has done alot on Star Wars movies and their tie ins but I want it to be something the girls would like too.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

HERBIE MOVIES for 7-12th graders, really?

Grid Iron Gang
Remember the Titans

If you want to go old school
Meatballs
Stand By Me

Napoleon Dynamite might be a good choice. There's some good stuff in there.

No-- it would not be intense for 7th graders. It would be intense for maybe 2nd-3rd graders though. I think it is rated PG-- so it's very mild.

You could do the original Indiana Jones -- remember there is the Ark scene at the end.

Meatballs
Stand By Me
I thought about those two, but Stand By Me is rated R and Meatballs contains a lot of sexual dialog and language. I worked at a private summer camp one summer in college that covered the same age range mentioned by the OP and suggested Meatballs as a rainy day activity one time. I said it'd be a "perfect" movie to show... but as it played I realized about all of the scenes I'd forgotten about. The people that ran the camp (the wife was a ex-Nun) weren't too happy with me!

Not Stand by Me or Meatballs. (They are both R rated for a reason). I think they would both be PG13 in today's standards.

If you want something educational Paperclips would be great. That is the story of some Tennessee middle schoolers who create a Holocaust rememberance musuem in thier town. They learn a lot about that period in history, intolerance and perserverance.

It's an excellent story.
