I lucked into my first job. I was in the Sheriff's Department Explorer Post. A local Department Store approached the Sheriff's Department about hiring those of us who were 16 or older as uniformed security in their stores. We were strictly a visual deterrent to shoplifting. Our uniforms were identical to those of Sheriff's Deputies, except our should patch said "Deputy Explorer" instead of "Deputy Sheriff". Our job was to just walk around the store. We did NOTHING else regarding shoplifting, that was all handled by the undercover operatives in the store. Shoplifters never caught onto .....that if I was in an area of the store......there were no undercover operatives in that area.....nor did they know that if I watched them walk out of the store with merchandise, I couldn't do anything.
Minimum wage in California was $2 an hour then....1973......and we got paid an extra 25 cents an hour because we were also supposed to be a deterrent to employee theft, since the employees never caught on that we had no powers to detain anyone if we witnessed a crime.
Was odd, because one of the teachers at my High School worked part time in the menswear department. I never had him as a teacher. One of my assignments was to go to the menswear department and count the leather coats every hour, which were chained to the rack. They were very popular shoplifting targets. I ran into that teacher at school and said hi, and he was shocked to see me. People in the store never caught on to the fact that their uniformed security guards were all 16, 17 or 18 years old.
