DD12 was just told about putting lemon juice in her hair for highlighting. I remember this was big when I was a teen but it isn't anything I ever did. Can anybody tell me about it. How do you do it? Is it bad for your hair? Is my brunette gonna be a blond? Your thoughts and comments are appreciated!

I used to do this when I was a teen. I really don't think it did anything!

I tried it as a teen, it just made my hair brittle and sticky! No change in color!

I remember it turning people's hair orange....or was that that Sun In stuff...we used both.

My DS 7 puts it in his hair during summer - he has dark blonde hair in the winter and in the summer the pool water lightens it and the sun works the rest -but nothing is even and it usualy streaks down the center --so to even it out we place lemon jucie on his hair 2-3 times a week -does nothing to the hair if you wash it out that night- if your hair is dark thought the tendancy is to pull red highlights not blonde....

There is this stuff you can buy at Sally Beauty Supply...part of the "beyond the zone" line..called Beach Head. It's only like $3, and doesn't leave your hair as sticky as lemon juice. Wet hair, go outside (or hit it with a hair dryer) and it really works.

I like to pull the red out in my darker hair...so I use this in the summer to lighten up...also works well for hiding roots when my highlights grow out.

ETA - After using this stuff...my hair is NOT dry/brittle/crunchy at all.

I remember trying the lemon juice thing when I was a pre-teen, being impatient (since the lemon juice didn't seem to be working), and then going to Sun-In. I used to love that stuff, but I'm sure my hair suffered.

As a brunette, Sun-In and lemon juice always turned my hair orange. If you want to do highlights, pick up a box of Herbal Essence Highlights or Loreal Colour Experte and use that. It's really easy to use and not expensive!

I am a brunette and tried the lemon juice as a teen. Didn't work AT ALL. The only thing it does do is strip your hair and make it dry.

vettechick-thanks for the tip on the Herbal Essence highlight kit. I just bought this over the weekend for my DD. We are planning on using it tonight. She has fairly dark brown hair. Back in June, I took her to a salon for her first highlights, paid a TON of money for them, and they hardly did anything. So, I was going to try this. You got good results?

My experience was brunettes turn a lovely (NOT) shade of orange with lemon juice.

It worked pretty good on my sandy blonde/brown hair though.....

Oh yes, salon highlights are sooo expensive. Last time I went and had them done it was $150 and that was just in the 'burbs of Atlanta. I just don't want to pay that every 2 months. So back in January I bought the Loreal kit and did my own. They turned out great and then another time they didn't have that kit and I got the HE "Rich Copper" kit and it was nice too!

Anyway, I do it alone so having curly hair helps. I just pick a strand and go with it. There is no rhyme or reason to how I highlight and I really can't screw it up as long as I'm consistent. Now straight hair is a different story. If that's what she has, you'll definitely need to be the one doing the highlighting. Just use a comb that has that long stick at the end and use that to pick the hair up. They give pretty simple instructions and I'd go easy this first time just in case you don't like color.

Have fun!
