YOur teen daugther's growth spurt after her cycle

Hi- my 12.5 year old just started her period and had a huge growth spurt in the last year of 5 inches. She just grew another inch after starting 2 weeks ago. She is now 5’7”. She has always been in the 85 precentile for height. My mother in law (who she favors) apparently grew to 5’6” at 13 , started at 13 and never grew another inch . I predict this will be the case with my 12yo. I am 5’4” my hudband is 6’2”. My ped predicted she would be 5’8”.
Now My other daughter is 15.5. and she started at exactly 13. she was under 5 feet at that time. she was always in the 60th precentile for height. In the last 2.5 years she has grown 6 inches. She is now 5’5”. She grew an inch in just the last few months so she is still growing. She favors me. I was so small and thin as a child they predicted i would be 4’11”. I grew until I was 17! My parents were 5ft and 5’10”. I think she might grow another inch.

This thread is from 7 years ago.

My daughter is 13 1/2 and is 4'10"". I'm still waiting for her to have her first "growth spurt" she's always plodded right along at the bottom of the growth scale. Slow and steady. I still think she'll make at least 5'1".

I don't know about the OP's daughter, but mine did. lol. (Pretty funny reading that little blast from the past - I didn't realize it was a zombie thread until I got to my own post.)
I guessed pretty well, DD made it to just 5'1". She's got no issues with being the shortest person in the family and among her friends.
Her only complaint is that some people think she's 12 instead of 20. But, that's probably more from wearing sweatshirts and leggings, no makeup, and putting her hair in a ponytail most of the time. She ages up quite a bit when she's dressed up, has her hair down, and throws on a little makeup.

I love zombie threads!

I was 5"4" when I graduated from high school at 17. I went away to college and grew 4" in a year. Everyone was shocked that I still had growing to do at that age.

My oldest daughter had a growth spurt in college :) Went to visit her, saw that her pants were too short, and figured she screwed up her laundry ;) Nope, she had grown about 2" in less than a year, yikes! She's now taller than her dad, and is the tallest female in the family, both sides of it! It's pretty funny since she used to be the shortest kid on her team in middle school.

I personally remember a growth spurt right after my first. All through elementary/middle school I was one of the shortest girls. After getting my period, I grew about 3-4 inches during 8th grade and that was that!

Dd16’s spurt was when she was 15, grew 4 inches and gained at least 15 pounds. I think she grew maybe an inch this year, topping out at 5’2. She was a late bloomer, didn’t get her period until she reached almost 100 pounds a few months before her 16th birthday. Dd15 reached 100 pounds a few months later, but is now about 5’5”. Dd21 was done growing by 13, she’s 5’4”. Our tallest is ds19, 6’2”.

Hey, I am vertically challenged.... Your daughter is over 5' at 12 years of age.
I do not understand the concern.

And, actually mentioning the onset of her cycle in the very Title...
??????????

I think my concern is probably a mothers OVER concern.

Ehhh....it's still a question moms probably have, so here goes:

DD grew one inch since she started hers. That was about 18 months ago. I'm pretty sure she's done growing at 5'7", 13 and a half years old. I am 5'7" and DH is 5'10".

My DD started her's in 7th grade. She was 5'6" at the time, and her pediatrician said she was probably done growing. She wasn't. She grew another inch in 8th grade and 2.5 inches in 9th grade. She is now almost 5'10"!

I'm pretty sure my dd's doc said her growth has nothing to do with her cycle. If she's remained in a certain range her whole life you can pretty much expect that even after her first period.

darn it, didn't notice it was a zombie thread.
I wonder how tall the OP's dd is now

Having three girls, talking about periods is nothing, even with their brothers or dad. It is no longer a taboo topic, and their friends are the same way (lots of cramp complaints). I can see why the OP was concerned, I too was afraid dd16 would be very short, since she was rarely over the 8th %, and rarely on the charts for weight.

Wow! Zombie thread- I couldn't remember my response, so I looked back at it. DD was only 12 back then- she's 19 now!!

DD continued to grow slowly- finally started her period when she was almost 14. By then, she had grown taller than me. I would say she ended up adding about 2" after that age, reaching 5'4" by the age of 17 of so. She was happy to reach that height- her pediatrician said she would top out at about 5'2". Sadly, she is still the shortest of her friends at college.

Hi,

I guess I'm looking for some reassurance on my 12 1/2 year old daughter's height. She just started her cycle a couple of months ago. Her current height is 5'1". She's always being on the 30% to 40% height on the growth chart all her short life.

From my understanding of talking to my doctor's and reading about height. Girls shoot up in height considerably a few months BEFORE their first menstrual cycle. Then afterwards only an inch of growing is left.

Well, my daughter never had the spike of growth. My question to you all has anyone's daugther grow many inches after their cycle?

I'm 5'9" and my husband is 6'1".

Two inches and one shoe size.

We need to get over the stigma that a natural body process is something to be embarrassed about. Why do people have to feel shamed for discussing a natural process of growth?

All I know is since this thread was originally started I'm sure I've lost a good inch to my height thanks to the aging process!!

I had read that as a rule of thumb they grow 2 inches after starting. This turned out true for DD16, who started at 4'11" and age 10.5, and has been 5'1" for years now.

For DD19 I didn't pay attention, she was always tall for her age so it didn't matter but I would say it was close to the 2 inches. But for DD16 starting at a young age and short stature, we did keep track because we were curious if it would keep her on the short side. She was always on the low percentiles for size too.

My girls talk about their periods on a regular basis at home and at school. Well, DD19 kept it hush-hush when she first started, and I wish she had been more open about it with her sister because she started just a year later and none of us were ready for that.

My Dd is 15, she is the same height as OP DD. She started her cycle at age 11 and hasn't grown anymore. Her pediatrician says she is done growing,
