YOur teen daugther's growth spurt after her cycle

Maybe it's just me, but if my mom discussed "my cycle" on the DIS board when I was 12, I would want to throw myself off a bridge.

What's the big deal? It's anonymous. You must have been an extremely sensitive teenager.

And I hate to tell her but Moms talk and more detailed than this! I know some potty training stories about some big 6 footers and a few other things about them to! And these are kids I know in person let alone on an anonymous message board

I was 5"4" when I graduated from high school at 17. I went away to college and grew 4" in a year. Everyone was shocked that I still had growing to do at that age.

No kids here, but personally, I started the week before I turned 11. During the following school year, I grew from 4'9" to 5'2" and that was that.

As an aside, I've apparently started shrinking now. My doctor measured me at my last appointment in July; I'm only 5'1.25" now! :sad1:

Why? Are you ashamed? (Inside joke from other thread that I know you were on. But it is food for thought.)

I think there are times it can border on TMI.

But in this case, it's not. I don't have an issue with discussing puberty or menarche in general. It's a fact of life. :confused3

My DD13 read the tampon thread yesterday and chuckled a bit. If she'd had an opinion, I would have posted it, but she didn't. But for her, it was good to see that others had some of the same issues she had.

My own opinion is that it's not set in stone.

My DD 13 may have grown an inch or two, but I don't think she's done yet. At last physical pediatrician (using software with growth charts) predicted her height will still be several more inches taller. Time will tell.

Did you see the boys thread last week? You might find it interesting, anyway.http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2612155&referrerid=70088

I think they are all so different..My dr told me after they get it they usually grow for 2 more years........my daughter is 13 1/2 and already 6'2" and when she was 12 started it at about 5'11" so in 7 months she will be the 2 yrs since starting ..she is still growing but not as fast......yes hubby is tall 6'8" and yes she plays basketball.......lol

My DD started early around 11ish, and grew around her 16th bday, but only an inch or so. She is also short, around 5'1 - 5'2" depending on when you check her height.

I'm 5'2" and never realized I was short until just now.

Me: 5' 0"
DD26: 5' 1"
DD20: 4' 11" (and that's stretching it:rotfl:)

We're all still waiting for a growth spurt.:) Both of my daughters grew slow but steady, and I don't think either of them gained any height after the age of 13.

I grew a couple inches in college.

DD13 has grown about 3 inches (maybe four) since she started almost 2 years ago. Not in a big spurt, but just slow and steady (curves seem to go in spurts though:eek:). She is jsut over 5'8" now. I am 5'5" and DH is 6'5".

My son is starting to sprout in the last few weeks. He will be 12 next week and I imagine i will be the shortest one in the family by next Christmas:lmao:

I'd have rather had my Mom discuss it here with people that I was never going to meet than talk about it with Mom's that knew me.

I think it's a valid concern and I'm interested in the responses. My DD is 12. She is 5'1". Recently she had put on some weight around the middle. I knew she was concerned about it so we brought it up with her Ped. He said he was not concerned...he expects her to shoot up a few inches and then get her cycle. When that happens, he said she will thin out.

I'm 5"1. I started my period at 11 and a half and at the time I was only 4"11 and I stopped growing at 13. Growth spurts after the start of menstruation vary as it has mentioned in the responses here. One of my friends that I grew up with reached 5"5 at age 14 and she got period at the age and stopped growing right after that. Her mom is 5"9 and was concerned and took her to a doctor who told them that some females don't get growth spurts after starting menstruation.

Being short isn't a bad thing. There were times I hated being short but right now I'm ok with it and I have know/known tall women who hated their heights. Short people tend to always look younger and sometimes that helps.

Is there any truth to the Old Wive's Tale that you can double a girls height at 18 months and it will be her adult height?

My DD turns 18 months in January so I'm curious.

I have heard about this and I also heard another version that if double the height at age 2 that it will be adult height. Growth and height can vary quite a bit. I have known people that were tall at certain ages as children but as adults they weren't that tall. They are also several height predictors online that sometimes aren't intended to be accurate but are to give parents some idea of how the children could possibly be.

Height and genetics can vary quite a bit as I mentioned in my previous post. I dated a guy a few years back that 5"8 and his dad was 6"3. He said since his mom was only 5"3 he got some of her short genes lol. I have known people that have been taller than their parents. My dad is 5"6 and my brothers grew to 5"8 and 5"9.

I've heard the one saying to double the height at age 2. I personally find no truth to that...my mother still has my age 2 exam from the doctor's office; I was already 3 feet tall at that point. All through elementary school, I was actually one of the tallest kids in the class. Then by 7th grade, I stopped at 5'2" and everyone shot past me.

I will never forget noting the day I was standing behind a boy named Anthony in science class, while we were putting our equipment back in the closet after class. He'd always been a few inches shorter than me, but suddenly that day, I was now looking UP at him... :teeth:

You just never know with kids and growing. My DD is 18 and just shot up another inch last year to 5'9", after staying 5'8" for a long time! Hope she's done now.

Well, I started when I was 12, and I can tell you I wasn't 5'7" at 12! I wasn't 5'6" either!

Somewhere from 12 - 16 I grew quite a bit.

I grew fairly steadily between 12 and 15 from 5'2" to 5'5". Then added a half inch after that. Between 14 and 16, I started growing hips.

Hi,

I guess I'm looking for some reassurance on my 12 1/2 year old daughter's height. She just started her cycle a couple of months ago. Her current height is 5'1". She's always being on the 30% to 40% height on the growth chart all her short life.

From my understanding of talking to my doctor's and reading about height. Girls shoot up in height considerably a few months BEFORE their first menstrual cycle. Then afterwards only an inch of growing is left.

Well, my daughter never had the spike of growth. My question to you all has anyone's daugther grow many inches after their cycle?

I'm 5'9" and my husband is 6'1".
