Hi,

I guess I'm looking for some reassurance on my 12 1/2 year old daughter's height. She just started her cycle a couple of months ago. Her current height is 5'1". She's always being on the 30% to 40% height on the growth chart all her short life.

From my understanding of talking to my doctor's and reading about height. Girls shoot up in height considerably a few months BEFORE their first menstrual cycle. Then afterwards only an inch of growing is left.

Well, my daughter never had the spike of growth. My question to you all has anyone's daugther grow many inches after their cycle?

I'm 5'9" and my husband is 6'1".

I was a late bloomer...didn't get my first period until I was 13 and a half, and was still short and scrawny. I then grew three inches over the next year and another inch after that to reach my final height of 5'7".

My DD12 seems to be following my pattern. She's the shortest in her class right now, but both DH and I come from tall families. She hasn't started her 'spurt' yet, but I'm sure she'll end up close to my height eventually.

DD13 started hars last March. Since then, she has shot up another 3 inches. And it is all in her legs. After taking the summer off from dance, they were shocked at how much longer her legs looked.

My daughter's ped basically gave us the same info and, in my DD's case, he was correct. She shot up prior to her cycle starting and *maybe* grew another inch after. Same with my friend's two daughters.

I think this is probably the norm; however, there are always those people who defy the norm and shoot up in height later. You don't hear much about girls doing this but I'm sure it happens.

ITA with Carnie. That said...

From personal experience and that of a few friends, we all seemed to have one last growth spurt anywhere from 15-17 years old and then leveled off. Mine was my junior year and I grew a final two inches. My close friend grew a final inch summer between junior and senior years.

If she is on the low side of the growth chart that is where she will stay more than likely. Short girls are usually done growing by age 12. Sorry....

Now if you really want to know, you can get a bone age scan to see if she is done growing. This is a simple XRAY of her wrist. They will be able to determine if her bones are fused together. If they are fused, she is done. If not, then she may have a growth spurt.

My youngest was on growth hormone from K-5. She managed to make to 5ft.

From the shortie set, there is nothing wrong with being 5'1", that is my height and I've managed to make my way just fine. Sure it would be nice if I could reach the top of the fridge or the top shelf at the grocery store or even see over a crowd but life is okeydokey from my point of view.

If your daughter is self conscious about it just focus her attention on the positives. She can date just about anyone she wants and wear heels because chances are she'll never have to worry about being too tall for a guy. She will always be confused as being much younger than she is, it might not sound like much as a teen but in your 40's it's kind of nice. It's nice to be a petite female, people are generally more gentle. There is also a health benefit, I NEVER EVER hit my head on low ceilings or lights or cabinets:thumbsup2

You can also tell her Sean Kingston keeps singing songs about her, "Fire Burning on the Dancefloor" & "Shawty's like a melody in my head"

No worries:goodvibes

I'm 6'0 and I've never worried about wearing heels - or not wearing heels - for a guy. ;)

Another shortie here, I dont reach 5"2. Never had 1 issue with it, physical or emotional.. Sure longer legs would be great for some fashion, but no biggie. I find it a completely acceptable height and I had boyfriends from 5'6 to 6'3 lol!

Dd14 spurted the year approaching her getting her period (which she got right before she turned 12). Then she grew another inch, and now she's done. She is only 5'3" (I'm 5'8", DH is 5'10"). It was the biggest growth spurt she's ever had - a few inches.

I'm 5'9" and my husband is 6'1".

My DD17 started her periods when she was 10, so she was still under 5 feet. Since then she has grown to 5'4" and I think she's done.

My DD is on the short side she is 5' 3 if she stretches it 5'2ish in reality!

She never had a growth spurt she always just grew steadily, slowly but steadily. After she started I would say she grew about an inch maybe an inch and a half. definitely done by the time she was 16. so no growth spurt for her before or after starting.

I didn't grow at all after I started. I was 5'3" in 5th grade, started my period the summer of sixth grade and that was it. No big growth spurt ever.

Just checked my textbook from my Peds rotation (very interested, since I have a dd almost exactly that age too). Seems almost every girl, once they start, grows between 2-6 inches. A few fall outside of that range, but most stay within it.

My 12 1/2 yr old is 4'6" now. We are thrilled -- she was 4'2" at 11 1/2, and hated being soooooo small.

ETA: dd's geneticist has always predicted that dd would most likely not make it to 5ft

I started a few months after turning 11- at the time, I was just a shade under 5'. I grew maybe another inch (more like 1/2") in the next few months, and that was it.

DD turned 12 in September and no sign of her period yet. She is about 4'11" right now- has grown about 3" in the past calendar year, a big spurt for her. She went from the 25th percentile to the 50th. According to the pediatrician, she should top out at 5'2", so I expect her to start sometime in the next year. She probably won't grow much at all once she starts.

DH and I are the same height as you and yours. DD so far has grown 8" since starting her cycle. She is currently 5'4.5". I don't think she is done yet, she has just turned 14yrs.

If we had doubled her height at 2 she should have maxed out at 4'11"

Maybe it's just me, but if my mom discussed "my cycle" on the DIS board when I was 12, I would want to throw myself off a bridge.

Yea, well it is so easy to see who this person is, I mean really. I could go to her city and automatically pick her out in a crowd.

I've never heard this one before??

I know plenty of girls who grow well into high school. My youngest sister grew 3" as a sophomore (maxing out at 5'2").

My daughter is 13 1/2 and is 4'10"". I'm still waiting for her to have her first "growth spurt" she's always plodded right along at the bottom of the growth scale. Slow and steady. I still think she'll make at least 5'1".
