A Disney character! ;) She really did say this and she was kidding, but it was kind of funny!

I wonder if she'll admit to who it's about in her will.

She auctioned this information off in August to the highest bidder in a charity auction on martha's vineyard where she lives.

Carly's Secret To Highest Bidder

EDGARTOWN, Mass., Aug. 5, 2003

Dark horse: Simon once told "Rolling Stone" that the song definitely isn't about ex-husband James Taylor (above), although he thought so, because "he's very vain." (Photo: AP)

(CBS/AP) Ever since her smash hit album "No Secrets" came out in 1972, including the song "You're So Vain," Carly Simon has in fact had a secret.

The song tells the story of a lover who is as attractive as he is faithless and arrogant, and ever since Carly belted out the words, she's been asked in interviews all over the world to reveal the identity of the man who inspired the lyrics.

The refrain of the song goes, "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you."

Simon, now 58, has always said she'd never tell who the song really is about and for decades, it seemed that was a principle that could never waver.

But there's something else Simon holds very dear as well: Martha's Vineyard, where she lives. Simon has agreed to tell the secret identity from "Vain" to the highest bidder in an auction benefiting Martha's Vineyard Community Services, which provides child care, counseling, substance abuse treatment services and visiting nurses to the Island community.

Simon's secret went for $50,000 at Monday night's auction in Edgartown, which raised a total of about $500,000 with the help of other items donated by other Vineyard celebrities including Walter Cronkite, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols.

And who was the highest bidder? NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol.

If $50,000 seems a little low for such a closely guarded bit of music folklore, consider this: there's a catch.

Ebersol had to promise not to tell anyone else.

The consolation prize: Simon, famous for avoiding crowds, has invited the winner to her home for a private lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, vodka on the rocks, and a performance of the song, before telling her new confidant who it is about.

Several male celebrities have long topped the speculation list of who "You're So Vain" is about.

They include her ex-husband, folk singer James Taylor, and three other men she once dated: actor Warren Beatty, singer and actor Kris Kristofferson, and Mick Jagger, who sang backup on the song.

The guessing game over the song has alternately flattered and irritated Simon, who told Diane Sawyer in 1990: "Who cares? I can't believe people care, you know? It was a riddle a long time ago and it's best, as all those riddles are, it's best unsolved."

In 2001, Simon brushed off CBS News Correspondent Rita Braver's request to solve the mystery, saying: "I could never really solve it because if I did, then no one would have anything to talk to me about."

Somehow, that seems unlikely.

Carly Simon's 'Vain' Secret Purchased For $50,000

(8/6/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- Carly Simon will tell the secret about her song "You're So Vain" to Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Sports and NBC Olympics, who paid $50,000 for the information. As a way of raising money for charity, Simon decided to auction off the name of the person her 1972 hit, "You're So Vain," was all about.

In about two weeks, Ebersol will join Carly at her Martha's Vineyard home for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich lunch, which will be followed by a private performance of "You're So Vain." Finally, after he signs an agreement NEVER to repeat her secret, she'll reveal to Ebersol what she's never told anyone before--just who was so vain she wrote a song about it.

On Tuesday morning's (August 5) Today show, Ebersol, who is an old friend of Carly's, said, "It won't be hard to keep a secret." He added that she gave him one hint--the person who inspired her to write "You're So Vain" has an "e" in their name. The clue isn't much help, since all of the people who fans have suspected all these years--Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens and her ex-husband, James Taylor, have that letter in their name. Ebersol said he made the highest bid "to make sure Carly didn't have to tell her secret to a total stranger."

Simon came up with the idea of auctioning off her long-kept secret at the Possible Dreams Auction as a way of raising funds for Martha's Vineyard Community Services. She's been a longtime supporter of the organization which provides child care, counseling, substance abuse treatment services and visiting nurses in the Martha's Vineyard area.

I wish she'd spill the beans. I've been curious about this FOREVER!

Actually it could be Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger because she said (on the radio today) that there was an E in the name. Of course then she pointed out that a Disney character was the vain one and with the E couldn't it be Eeyore. (Course she said this because she wrote the music for Piglets Big Movie which is part of what she was talking about).

That Wicked Queen in Snow White was pretty vain.;)

I love this song so much because this was my mom's song to my dad when they were dating. She always said he was always looking in the mirror making sure his curls were just right. I always get warm feelings when I hear this song and thinking about them.

Not sure I care either way and the post is from 2004............LOL. So he pays $50,000 to find out but then can't tell anyone? Sounds more like a publicity stunt then anything else.

It was for charity.
He's keep the "secret" for about 18 years.
So far. :poop:

She stated years and years ago that is was about Warren Beatty. That song was written and recorded in or about 1970. Some of the people being listed were not even old enough in 1970 to be vain. You know with all the magic of the internet, why is it that no one knows how to use it except to follow idiots.

I can’t help it. I don’t really care who the song is about. What got my attention to this thread is the misuse of “your/you’re”. 🤨 Maybe that was the intention.
