Your reliable washer and dryer? 5+ years old

I have Kenmores, the HE3 front-loader and the SuperDuty dryer. Bought in 2005, moved twice so far and used for a family of 7-never a problem yet!

They were bought to replace a Kenmore set that was 7 years old, left in the house we had sold-no repairs ever needed on them either. I'm very satisfied with Kenmore washers and dryers.

Our Maytag washer and dryer was purchased in 1980. They have been very reliable.:thumbsup2

I know some day we will have to replace them, but the quality of the products will not be the same.

Thanks everybody! I was leaning toward kenmore, but then read a bunch of bad reviews and got nervous. I appreciate your help!

I have an Amana washer and a Maytag dryer. Both were bought at the same time and are over 9 years old. Both survived a cross country trip in a moving van as well. They work great and have never had a repair issue nor show any signs of breaking down.

I have a slightly up from base Maytag gas dryer for 16 years. The only issue I had, tended to interupt a dry cycle to take out an item and pushed to door hard with my knee.....found out a no no. the ignitor or something similar is very hot and can break from the impact. After that no more slamming.

I had a Maytag washer the same time with never an issue, but saw a floor model WHirlpool and felt I would need to put some belts on my older one so I bought it at a steal and gave my son the 16 year old one. Still running....
I have a ton of laundry to do too.

I WILL NEVER buy another GE, even if I got 5-7 years from one that is not acceptable to me. Plus I did have to put in 2 heating elements and the clothes were needing 2 spins to get water out after awhile.

My mothers Maytag, and my Aunt, they had theirs over 20 years. Now I am not sure the products are as well made as back in the day

We also have a Kenmore washer & dryer that we've had for over 13 years. My friend keeps trying to get me to buy the new front loading machines but I keep telling her there is nothing wrong with my old ones!

Ours are Whirlpool, just the basic set, and they are 13 years old. We've had a problem with each in the last year, but both times, DH was able to buy a $20-30 part and fix them himself.

MIL bought a new set a couple years after we got ours, and she's had to replace them already. She complained to the salesman because her previous set had last 25 years, and he said, "Ma'am, they don't make them that way anymore." I don't know if that's the case or not, but that's what he told her.

I had our Kenmore washer and dryer for over 12 years. I had basic maintence on them for a few years (Under their maintenance plan). But now, after 12 years washer is going. The transmission on the washer stopes with a bang. The dryer just keeps on going.

I know we are gong to need a new one soon. I'm not sure if it will be a kenmore, but it will be one without too many bells and whistles.

Another bottom rung Kenmore owner. Both washer and drier they are 15 years old. Love them both they do a great job.

We have a HE Samsung front loader and a basic Whirlpool dryer. Had the dryer for over 7 and washer for 5. Love my washer but since it was so pricey I do not let anyone use it except me. I guess that is silly but I don't want anyone breaking it!

Kenmore, very basic, 15 years old.

I think the thing is that people who now have units that are old got them when the quality was just better. The ones you buy today I just don't think are made to last as long. So even if you buy the same brand as someone on this thread, I wouldn't expect them to last as long.

I've seen the same with vacuum cleaners and other appliances. I had one that was an absolute tank and lasted 20 years. When it finally died, I bought another one from the same company, thinking I'd get the same quality. Wrong. It lasted less than two years. Got another one from a different company, got another two years. Had the same experience with a toaster and a dishwasher. I've tried buying the more advanced models of things and they don't seem to do any better than the basic models.

It's just that the stuff made today is so cheaply made it doesn't last. It's disappointing.

I have a 13 year-old 80 series Kenmore Washer and 70 series Kenmore dryer. I've only had 2 minor repairs in 13 years. One was a little rubber piece that a Sears guy came out and replaced in all of 5 minutes and charged me $175 :scared1: when the dryer was only 18 months old and cost $250 new.

The other repair was just a few months ago and cost me $45 including parts & labor. The 2nd time I used craig's list and found a moonlighting repairman who said I'd have paid $150 had his company done the repair. I learned my lesson about that.

He told me this set was a really good set and to keep it as long as I can. He said the newer sets are built with cheaper parts and fall apart in a 1/3 of the time compared to the older machines.

I am a former Whirlpool employee Whirlpool is Mommy & Daddy to Maytag, Kitchenaid,Armana, Estate, Inglis(they also make many Kenmore models)... may even be a few more I am also a very happy owner of Whirlpool and Maytag products :goodvibes Great brands... Just remember this the more bells and whistles you add to your products the more that can go wrong! Ive had my Duet washer for almost 5 years now, and it works fine. My Maytag dryer is the basic model its extra capacity and I really want the washer to match.

All these appliances are man made and have a lifetime expectancy the newer models that sing songs and have pretty lights with colors to match your home may not last to see 2020 or beyond =)

Life expectancy also varies per household due to usage in my home we use our washer every other day 1 -2 loads, there are households that do 1 load a day to 1 load a week ect.

Truth is:: None of these appliances are ANYTHING like they use to be. They have have to evolve with time and with regulations like efficiancy with water and heat ect.

I am a Whirlpool snob but any brand I am sure will do the job for you, I recommend getting an extended warranty and read the fine print!! You get a 1year manufacters warranty with most brand that is free comes with it and if anything breaks down call the company and they should cover the fix as long as its not a use and care issue meaning you leave your pen or marker in the washer or forget to empty pockets and a coin gets stuck in the drum so everytime you dry you hear an annoying noise thats not covered. Installation issues are not covered either. If you buy an extended warranty make sure it starts AFTER your 1 year manufacters warranty ends.

When my Duet finally kicks the bucket and really I hope its sooner rather than later I hate the front load washer and the small drum mine has I will be buying a Maytag topload washer with no cool new options added :goodvibes

Bosch Nexxt front load washer and gas dryer. Had them for 7 years and no problems (knock on wood :) ).

I have Kenmore. We have had the washer for 10 years and the dryer for 6. They are front loaders and we love them.

Dawn

We have whirlpool gold washer and dryer.... going on 6 years and not 1 problem. Hope they last several more years!

I have a Maytag top-loading washing machine that I've had for 13 years, still works great. Maytag dryer, same age, had to have a belt replaced once, but is going strong, too.

Maytag Atlantis, 8 yrs old. Never been repaired...still works great.

I bought my first set, a Kenmore washer and dryer, in 1977. I had to replace the washer in 2006, and the dryer is still going strong. So 29 years for the washer, and the dryer is now 34. The only repairs it has needed have been minor things ie belts that my husband could handle. Bottom of the line, no frills, handled laundry for a family of five including three girls who wouldn't wear stuff twice.

My aunt's is a Kenmore 90 series, extra large capacity (although I don't think it would handle a king comforter, queen probably). She bought it when she moved into an apartment 6 or 7 years ago. It is very lightly used, and still looks brand new.

They've actually been sitting in the storage shed for a year now. Since day one, she has complained about the Admiral set that came with the house. So today, I found the strength to finally switch the sets.

It has a bleach dispenser and softener dispenser in it, along with a dozen settings and even temp control settings for the water. There's a few settings for the dryer, but it dries very fast. The other set would take forever, and sometimes two cycles (especially with jeans).
