Howdy! I am MAKING DH go on the Atlantis Submarine Excursion (the 100 ft. one) in Grand Cayman. (I am a tad claustrophobic, so I want to do this vicariously through him.) I would love some feedback as to what you thought when you did it.
Thanks bunches!

My family of three did this in Grand Cayman several years ago, and we really loved it. It is easy to walk to from where you tender into town. You can book it on your own. If i remember correctly, they offer excursions every hour and a half. You can also get a percentage (10% if i am remembering right) off the merchandise in the shop, and they offer a really nice tape that highlights the sub. I actually video taped most of this. We really enjoyed it.

You would be surprised that it is not such a tight fit once you get in and sat down. It is not as bad as you would think.

I think that you would enjoy this, even though it was a little expensive, but cheaper to book on your own than through the ship. Let me know if there are other specific questions you have and i will be happy to try and answer them.

I did it on the Eastern rather then the Western. I am very claustrophobic but wouldn't let my daughter go without me. I was fine. It was much bigger then I expected and the portholes are big enough that you were almost outside. For a good portion of the trip you could look up and see the surface (don't know if it is that way in Grand Cayman or not). Felt better in the submarine then in an elevator and I dislike them enough that I walked to the top of the Eifel tower a couple of times rather then get in the elevator.

THanks for your posts! Very helpful.

Any other opinions about the sub ride, service, what you see, the scope of your view, etc,?

This is something that hubby and I are interested in doing in Grand Cayman. I like the idea of saving money, too.

atlantis submarine/grand cayman
Hi Sara. We really enjoyed the Atlantis Submarine in Grand Cayman. Submarine seats about 48 people and every two seats shares one large porthole - so everyone on board has good view. Submarine descends to about 104 feet and circles around a beautiful coral reef. Tour lasts about 1 - 11/4 hours. Water was crystal clear on day we went and we saw mostly small assorted colorful fish, a stingray, and one or two turtles. A wonderful way to explore the undersea life particularly, if like my husband, you are a non-swimmer and cannot snorkel or scuba dive. Our two boys (7 and 4) really enjoyed it. A photograph of your family is taken as you board the tender which takes you out to dive site (a five or ten minute ride) and photo in a commemorative "Atlantis Submarine" jacket is available for purchase after dive for $10.00 - it turned out to be one of the only good "family" photos we had taken. You mention that several types of similar excursions are available, the one described above is available in both Cozumel and Grand Cayman. There is also the Atlantis "Deep Sea" Explorer excursion. I believe this is a two person (plus pilot) dive in a much smaller sub which can descend much further down into the water. I think the cost of that one was much more expensive somewhere in the 300.00 range. Sorry I don't know more about that one, as everyone with us was taking the larger submarine. Hope this info helps.
