Last time we went as a family, we each had a carry-on roller and a backpack or duffle that would fit under the seat. We bought the kids new hard shell 4 wheel spinners for the trip, and we still use them all the time (until very recently I used to borrow one of them when traveling, just recently got my own). We put stickers near where the handle comes down, so we could tell them apart as we got them them same ones. When it came to souvenirs, we did have to limit them to things that would fit into their suitcase, which had it's benefits and drawbacks.

For me, I just bought a duffle to go under the seat https://www.amazon.com/World-Travel...ie=UTF8&qid=1471212851&sr=1-4&nodeID=15743211 and a new hard side roll-on which works a bit better for my laptop https://www.amazon.com/Oxford-Hards...1212700&sr=8-1&keywords=travelers+club+oxford... but it does seriously cut down on the clothes storage (hence the duffle bag). Even on vacation I bring my laptop in case a work emergency comes up :sad2: It's not too dissimilar from the set up IndianaScott has ...

Packing for a flight is no longer a fashion show as it was a dozen years ago. It's a game of keep it under 50 pounds, even if you have a free bag or two. The airlines are notoriously hard on checked bags so we've learned not to spend a fortune on checked bags. We've switched to dark (not black) ultra light bags so that we can pack 50 pounds of our stuff, not 10-12 pounds of bag and then our stuff. The new bag is only 5 pounds as compared to the old "premium" one that clocked in at 13. We shall see if it lasts. We used www.ebags.com and www.ebates.com with 12% cash back so it was a steal for the set. I'm prepared that this new purchase will only last a few airline trips and will chalk it up to modern travel. Sad, but I try to be a realist.

We do have good quality, smooth rolling spinners for carry-ons as we are in control of the damage more or less. We also have high quality backpacks for short hauls and the in parks.

I hope this helps and good luck.

Mike
