Has anyone stayed at the Grand Californian recently, and if so, can you give any particular recommendations regarding preferable rooms? We are staying there June 2009 on DVC points with a Downtown Disney view, and we wondering if anyone had any rooms with great views to take advantage of the DD view!

Also, any other information or tips about the Grand Californian in general would be appreciated, like how to manage your way through the resort, etc.

Thanks to everyone for your tips!

I heard the GC is beautiful. Plan on staying there next year, But I think your question will get a much better response and better information on the Disneyland Forum :thumbsup2

Hi! We love the GCH -- we stay there every year when we go down to Disneyland! We've stayed in standard, theme park, and concierge rooms, so I dont have a recommendation for a DTD view. I think one of our concierge rooms was facing DTD and we could see the really high fireworks over the castle from that room. If your primary concern is the view, ask for a nice one. Like the YC/BC at WDW, the walk to your room can be either short or really really long, so if you dont want to be at the end of many hallways, ask to be closer to the lobby elevators.

The resort is one building (unless you stay in the DVC rooms they are building in the back) with a gorgeous lobby with music, a huge fireplace, and craftsman architecture. It's a little maze-like at first, so follow the signs if you want to get to DTD/Disneyland (one exit), or the pool area / CA (a second exit).

The pools are really nice -- there are lots of umbrellas for shade and lots of lounge chairs with these soft, comfy pads on them. Towels are provided at the pools. There is a pool with a redwood tree big slide and a little kids' slide. Nearby there is a kiddie pool for the little ones. On the other side of that is another pool that is nice but doesn't have any slides. The pool area is very relaxing. You can order food/drinks poolside, too!

Whitewater Snacks is a quick-service place at GCH. It's great for a fast breakfast, but we like it for a lunch around the pool. Their nachos are great and large enough to share! My DD really likes the buffet breakfast at Storyteller's with Chip & Dale. IMO it has the best food of any character meal we've ever had, but it's still a character buffet.

There are so many dining choices at DTD, too, which is right outside the exit from the GCH. Literally, you walk out and you're in the middle of DTD. The other exit, into CA, leads right into the park. Grizzly River Rapids is right there by the exit (great since you can ride and ride, get drenched, run to the room to change and be back at the park in 10 mins or so). Soarin is also very close to the GCH entrance.

The location of this hotel is the #1 reason we stay there. There is no other hotel so conveniently located at Disneyland. It's also the nicest hotel there, and the only Disney hotel that has great architecture, ambiance, etc.

You'll probably be surprised at how close everything is when you stay there. It's a 10 foot walk into CA, a short walk to Disneyland, and right in the heart of DTD. There are no transportation options offerred since it's all so close. You can take the monorail from Tomorrowland to DTD, but the walk is about the same since the station is by the Rainforest Cafe, not the hotel. The monorail goes through the inner courtyards at the GCH, but it doesn't stop there.

Hope this wasn't too much information! It's really a great hotel! I hope you enjoy it!:)

WOW!! Thanks for that info, very thorough and will give me a good idea how to plan our days there....now we just have to wait for it to arrive!

I had a standard room last December and a DTD view room back in 2001. I have to admit - the DTD view room was a last minute lucky surprise because there had been a cancellation so we were able to sneak in on a moment's notice. I liked having the balcony to be able to sit outside and watch the passersby in DTD and look down on the twinkling holiday lights in the trees, and was not expecting the fireworks at night. It was a delightful treat because it was such a great view of the fireworks...better than trying to stand out in the cold among throngs of people and crane my neck up to see them. Last December, when we were in the standard room, we just had a view of the other two hotels and it was okay. I mean, we love the GCH because of the aforementioned convenience and location factor, and during the holiday season, the GCH is just plain gorgeous. It is a stunning hotel anyway, but it is perfect during the holidays. So warm and cozy. The beds in the room were a little taller than I expected, so I had to climb up on mine, and there is not a lot of floor space, but it was fine. You will love it.

We always stay on points, and we've had DTD views.

The DTD views are broken up like the buildings of DTD, because they are on the 3rd and 4th floors of many of those shops. If you look at this map (best one I could find right now) http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/map/mapSWF?name=MapOverviewPage , you can see the hotel building that encompass the south side of DTD. (Keep in mind that North is the bottom of the map.)

The rooms are above World of Disney and extend down to Catal, with a break for the big security gates in the middle. The ones above World give you the closest view of the fireworks, but are the farthest from any elevator. (There are stairs.) Also, you have access through that big fire gate, but I'm not sure if it is still open. It has a card lock and I know we've gone out it in the past, but I don't know if they have turned it into a fire exit only.

The east wing of the hotel is actually serviced by a second set of elevators that come out by the restaurants and the hotel's DCA entrance gate. Those are mighty convenient for folks on that side of the hotel.

Keep in mind that all of the DTD views will give you music in your room every night - there are several street performers that play well into the evening, so there are two schools of thought on them - 1) it's great to hang out on the balcony and hear the music to lull you into a soothing calm :hippie: or 2) tell those dang Zamfir wannabes to shut up and go home!

You decide.... :lmao:

We stayed in March and loved it. Wouldn't stay again because of the cost, but for our first time splurge it was awesome. We didn't have DTD view, but we loved our room, close to the main lobby elevators, anyway. We could see the fireworks over the roof of the wing opposite.

If you would like a good map of the hotel layout, go to Tinkstravel dot com (the link never works, for some reason) and go to Grand Californian. There are picture links on the right side, which show lobby layout and room layout.

Secret DTD entrance: There's a fire door at the bottom of the stairwell on the extreme NE corner of the hotel. It comes out right between the World of Disney store and La Brea Bakery, right near the security tables. It's a great way to get to the park in the morning! However, because it's locked, of course you can't get back in that way... unless some brave soul runs ahead, all the way around (which is NOT short) and comes to let you in. There's an article that details it here, it's about halfway down the page: http://www.mouseplanet.com/articles.php?art=mm060329as

Hope that helps! :)

I've stayed with a DTD view a couple of years ago and it was great. It was fairly hot, and we loved to hang out on the balcony at night. We were also near some of the street performers and had free music to listen to every night :) I LOOOOVED. We did not get a good view of the fireworks though. we were not as close to the entrance.

We had a DTD view last November. We loved it!!! The nicest hotel we've stayed at in a long time!!
