What are some of your favorite classical movies? I have fallen in love with them as of late and am looking for some of your must-see movies. The only genre I am not really fond of is war/military movies.
TIA!popcorn::

In no particular order cuz I love them all:

1. Gone With The Wind
2. Godfather I and II
3. The Great Escape (even tho' WWII POW - give it a chance, it's great!)
4. Young Frankenstein
5. Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer
6. The Long, Long Trailer
7. Wizard of Oz
8. The Bluebird of Happiness
9. Babes in Arms
10. All About Eve
11. Some Like it Hot
12. Swiss Family Robinson
13. Mrs. Miniver
14. Goodbye Mr. Chips
15. Dr. Zhivago
16. The Bridge Over The River Kwai (another excellent WWII POW film)
17. Sunset Boulevard

That should get you started

I think its a classic but maybe not as old as some. The Sting - loved that movie! :)

Some Like it Hot
Wizard of Oz
Nutty Professor
The Philadelphia Story
Sabrina
The Rules of the Game
On the Waterfront

Godfather 1 and 2 are my favorite movies. Until the release of Caddyshack 2 I thought the third was the worst squeal ever made.

Also:

Modern Times and The Great Dictator with Charlie Chaplin.
My Fair Lady (or anything with Audrey Hepburn)
Citizen Kane
On The Waterfront
Double Indemnity
Au Revoir es Infants It is in French with subtitles but is a great period piece about WW2.

Here's a bunch of really great old movies:

The Wizard of Oz
Gone with the Wind
Casablanca
The King and I
Sound of Music
Any Audrey Hepburn movie - Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady, Roman Holiday, Funny Face, Charade...
Singin' in the Rain
Meet Me in St. Louis
Guys and Dolls
An Affair to Remember
It Happened One Night
Arsenic and Old Lace
His Girl Friday
It's a Wonderful Life
The African Queen
North by Northwest
Bringing up Baby

I'm a classic movie junky.. :lovestruc

Anna Karin
Boomtown
Burnt Offerings
A Street Car Named Desire
Gone With The Wind
Moses
Cleopatra
Dr. Zhivago

How could I forget Meet Me In St Louis, Singin in the Rain and Sound of Music? Love the. Also Agree with everything else on Ashley W's list. Love those Cary Grant films you've listed. And of course, Casablanca is a no brainer.

Some others: Now Voyager, Babes in Arms, The Egg and I, My Little Chickadee, Stalag 17, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Exorcist....it goes on and on....

just wanted to add one... "Somewhere In Time." - Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymore.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I am building a wish list on amazon. I've never see Casablanca- can you believe it? That is a definite!
Now, do you guys own these? Rent these? Catch them on AMC? I ask because many of them are pricey.

I honestly can't say I watched too many old films to come up with a list like everyone else. I do however think Casablanca (while good) is way overrated. The same for, Rebel Without a Cause.

My absolute favorite is, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. 2nd favorite, It's a Wonderful Life. I guess I'm a huge fan of Jimmy Stewart.

A bit of humorous trivia. When It's a Wonderful Life released, it really didn't do so well. It never became something considered GREAT, for many, many, years.

EDIT: and while I wouldn't consider it an oldie, I LOVE the 1st and 2nd Godfather movies.

Like I said, I haven't watched many, but I caught Casablanca and Rebel Without a cause on Netflix with instant watch. I just checked and Casablanca is no longer on instant watch (some movies are on instant watch for a limited time, others permanently).

EDIT: I also started to watch my first silent film there too, but I just couldn't hack it and shut it down before it got started. I can do foreign with subtitles, but when you have nothing, I just can't get into that.

Certanitly all the previous mentioned ones are great movies and I have seen them many times.

one that I do like is "To kill a mockingbird"

a few of the John Wayne ones...
chisum
rio lobo
big jake
sons of katie elder
the alamo
she wore a yellow ribbon
back to baatan
the sands of iwo jima
the quiet man (best fight scene, with a bar break)
the flying leathernecks..
etc.

of course...I DO like some others....
darkstar
cat women of the moon
Plan 9 from outer space
THX 1138
metropolis
it, the terror for beyond space
(too name a few!)

TCM and AMC has many of them. You can also check services like Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand and stream them to your television if they are available. I am not a physical media person and would rather just stream it then have a disc.

The Sound of Music
Fiddler on the Roof
The King and I
The Thin Man Series
Anything with Carey Grant
Anything with Bogey and Bacall
Anything with Hepburn and Tracey
Anything with Judy Garland
The Haunting (old version)

My list is simple. ;)

I agree with many things already mentioned (especially Roman Holiday, Singin In the Rain, My Fair Lady, Some Like It Hot, The Sound of Music and Sabrina). I have not seen:
Lillies of the Field
West Side Story
12 Angry Men
Night of the Iguana
mentioned yet.

Also, as Firedancer said, I would recomend signing up for Netflix to view them. You can just put them all in your queue and they will come (and I would think more and more will be available online also).
