I booked our (first) cruise December 18. We will be going in October. I declined the Disney Insurance and I'm looking at Insure My Trip. It gave me several options and one from C&F Travel Insured International looks good. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with them or any other insurer. Is there anyone you would you recommend or you would steer clear of?

If if makes a difference we'll use airline miles to book our flights before and after the cruise.

Thank you in advance for any help! :)

No specific experience with that insurer, but I use the info at the bottom of the "compare" page (years in service, rating) to figure out who seems to be giving the best service. A company that's only been in service for 6 years is less likely to get my business than a company that's been in business for 100 years.

That's the company that we went with for both our cruises. We, thankfully, haven't needed to file a claim, so no idea how they are with that. We did the Worldwide Trip Protector. I liked the coverage offered and kids under 18 are free. (This includes kids that will BE 18 on the cruise if you purchase the policy before their 18th birthday.)

What has me confused about travel insurance is the pre-existing medical condition clauses. I particularly want this insurance - in addition to something happening travel-wise (we are taking the June 14th 2019 Mediterranean cruise) but because my Dad is 89 - and well - I have to think about worse case scenarios.....

And yes - he is a walking encyclopedia of pre-existing conditions (a living miracle on his third heart bypass to name one).

Some policies have a 180 check back on them - others 60 days.

Does anyone know what that means?

We had to file a claim due to late cancellation of a cruise because of a medical emergency. Allianz was our insurer. Submitted documentation online as scanned PDFs of the non-refundable charges and the medical situation. Had a refund in less than two weeks.

If there is a medical-related claim, the travel insurance will require a “look-back” at the individual’s medical history to see if he had a related treatment/diagnosis/claim within the 180 days (or 60 days) prior to the purchase of the travel insurance policy. If yes, it is a pre-existing condition and may not be covered by the travel insurance unless you purchased a policy with a PEC waiver. Often such plans are easily available within about 2 weeks of booking the cruise; otherwise a PEC can be available but is likely to be pricey.

Enjoy your cruise!
