Since my co-worker is preg. we've been looking into other company polices as well as maternity leave. We get 3 days for the death of an immediate family member. What does your company give you?
There's no way most people would come back that fast.

Officially, up to 5 paid days for an immediate family member, 3 for extended family.

Unofficially, it's up to you and your boss to work out an arrangement when and if the time comes.

DH got 3 days paid when his father passed away. He could have taken more as vacation time or personal days, but he didnt really need it(plus we were going away on vacation 2 weeks later, so he felt as though he should go back to work).

Ours is 5 days for immediate family (parents, in-laws, siblings, children) and none for extended family members.

I get 7.5 hours of sick leave and 7.5 hours of annual leave each month. If I have the time, I'd take it. If my time is used up, they're really understanding about things like that.

They might have something set aside for us for things like that, I just haven't had to check into it personally.:)

Ours is 3 days for immediate family and technically none for extended family. I've never known anyone to deny someone the time to go to a wake or funeral even if it's for a friend's family member.

In July of this year, I had an employee who called me on July 5th (a Friday, for those who don't have a calendar handy, and the day after the holiday.) She knew that a coworker already had the time off so she couldn't go away with her boyfriend that weekend... they'd have to pick another weekend. Lo and behold... her grandfather died on the evening of the 4th... or so she told me. Of course, I was understanding, but she never called back with any details of the wake in case any of us wanted to go. It wasn't in our paper, or the paper that is produced 15 miles from here, in case that's the one they get and read. She left a message on my VM that the funeral was Monday... again, no other details. Little did she know that her father gave her away. He called looking for her on Friday, and was surprised that she wasn't at work. Let's just say that she didn't make it through the day on Tuesday.

How dumb can some people be???? I mean, what did they think it was -- high school???

Just curious, what do they consider immediate & what do they consider extended?

I mean I don't live with my parents, but I'm not married & I have no kids & they're very much a big part of my life still. Would they be considered immediate? What if I were married or had kids, would my parents then be considered extended? I share an apartment with my sister, would she be considered extended or immediate?

Jeff generally immediate means spouse, kids, parents, siblings and in-laws. Some companies are more understanding and others make you wonder why your working there.

Our company policy states "immediate family" to be:

"Immediate family" for this purpose is defined as spouse, domestic partner, father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, stepmother, stepfather, grandmother or grandfather, but the Company recognizes there are circumstances when other individuals may also be considered immediate family.

Our company only gives three days for immediate family members as well (this does includes all Steve mentioned plus step siblings & parents). We get nothing for anyone else, and I have to use my own personal time for anything beyond those three days or for non-immediate family members.

I work for a major insurance company and we get 3 days for immediate family, 1 day for other family. Our company's definition of immediate family does not extend to grandparents, which I think is terrible. Although my department has been flexible and allowed more days for grandparents by coding it as an immediate family absense in the books, especially when travel was involved.

We give our employees 3 days for immeditate family. Pretty much industry standard. As we only have 3 employees, no one has ever taken any to date.

Our office allows 3 days for in town family members. For out of town family we are allowed 5 days. You can then add any sick leave, and if you are out of that then you can add vacation leave. They were really nice when my Grandpa passed away last year.

LOL! I've wondered on several occasions.

Good night! 3 days?! Geez, how on earth are people supposed to "get over it" if they just found out their spouse, child or parent just died?!

My company allows 3 PAID days but we can take more days unpaid if needed.
