What are your best money saving tips for DisneyLand? Eating and such? We're on a tight budget...and won hoppers from a radio station :dancer: - we're going just before DH leaves for Iraq.....and we need to do it as economically as possible. The Gas alone is going to eat us up:scared1: !!! Thanks for any help you can offer......Meg

Eat a big breakfast before you go to the Park and take a backpack or stroller full of snacks into the park with you. Most people can spend a full day at DLR and only eat one meal. The meal you do eat should be counter service. Most are a pretty good value and depending on how many little ones you have you can share.

If you are in a hotel, don't stay at the resort. Hotels across the street are 1/3 the price and just as close. But read the hotel reviews because there is a BIG difference in hotels. Some of the best for the money are Howard Johnsons, Fairfield Inn, Best Western Park Place Inn, and Candy Cane Inn.

With free tickets, a cheap hotel, and not spending much on food you should have a GREAT time.

Check out the menus of Disney restaurants online, so you have a plan. Then stick to the plan. :D

Gotta say, it might behoove you to sign up for Southwest Air's "DING!", because I've seen airfare into the Anaheim area for almost nothing. Then again, I don't know how many people are going on your trip, so maybe driving does save...but if you haven't already thought about it, you might want to just SEE if there are any amazing fares at the time you're going. (Ding fares, by the way, are fairly last-minute, I think I've seen one or MAYBE two months out, but they can get pretty low!!!)

Thank you both....RMH and Bumbershoot.....okay...here's the deal - there's 8 of us....DH, me and six little munchkins!!! ages 13 down to 9 months!!!! I don't think we could do it by flying.....because then we'd need a car when we got down there, I think if we rented one it would put a bigger dent in our very tight budget!!!!!
Do they rent buses???:lmao:
Thanks for the list of hotels....I'll take a look at which ones (if any) give a military discount. I feel so blessed that we won the tickets to Disney....it was just amazing!!! And hoppers at that!
I'm hoping that we can really watch the dining part of it...I've already been planning on taking LOTS of food from home here...and the kids are already trained to drink water (and lots of it). My mom is searching for coupons for some fast food places.....and we heard that Denny's has "kids eat free" - well the 13 yr old (James) is considered an adult...so that takes care of the 3 next in line...then there's DD who is 3 and eats like a pigeon....and littlest DD that I nurse...soooooooo we're are working on a PLAN here....
Thanks to people like you both - hopefully we'll have lots of $ saving ideas headed our way. I know my kids are going to love the SeaWorld too...they love animals...
I'm one blessed girl...tell you what. Trying not to think of DH leaving....I wish this whole thing was over and everyone could come home and stay home. We're lucky to be at Vandenberg.... thanks again...Meg

1. Stay offsite. Some hotels offsite are closer to the gates than the resort hotels

2. Eat breakfast in your hotel

3. Bring water bottles to refill and lemonade/iced tea/kool-aid packets. You can buy the little pouches at a grocery store for a cheap price and they'll help save on drinks.

4. Stick to counter service meals.

Desert Inn & Suites www.anaheimdesertinn.com
1. it has probably THE cheapest suites which accommodate 8
2. fridge and microwave in every room
3. cheap and clean (so they say, I haven't stayed there personally....yet)
4. one of the closest hotels to the gate, and trust me -- you'll be glad you chose close proximity when it comes to kids and naptime
5. free parking (though it is limited); some of the hotels further down the strip charge for parking

eta: when are you going?

Call HoJO's directly to see if you can get Entertainment rate for your dates (typically $54 - $69/nt)

Share meals, the portions are enormous! The Plaza Inn chicken meal seems pricey at first glance, but you get three pieces of chicken, big servings of side items.. quite filling for two to eat (and maybe enough extra to feed the pigeon child ;) )

Breakfast in room is a good strategy as are refillable water bottles and crystal light single packets. I usually bring trail mix or fruit snacks into the park, helps to tide them over until the next meal.

Buy t-shirts and other Disney stuff outside of the park... find deals at Dollar Tree or Walmart before you go..."Tinkerbell gifts " keeps down the "mommy I want..."
There is an outlet store not far from DL that sells Disney merchandise called hte Character Warehouse. The clothing is not always a good price but the small trinkets (stationary, candy, glow stuff) are very good deals.

Eat outside the park when you can.. don't interrupt your time in the park just to save bucks but if you are leaving anyway for a break.. have your lunch or dinner while your out of the park.

And have a fantastic fun time!!

Depending on how long it is until you go...

What we do now is charge EVERYTHING in the months before the trip to our Disney Visa card. (I subtract everything I buy in my checkbook as if I used my ATM card, so that at the end of the month, there's just one bill to pay and it's covered)

That way we get points and redeem them for a Disney Rewards Card. We usually have enough to cover all of our meals. It's basically getting them all for free, and we didn't have to pay anything different than we usually pay each month.

Does this make sense?:confused3

If you have AAA a few restaraunts have 10% off in DL and I know I saw some military discounts at 2 places when we were there a few wks ago but I can't remember what they were now.
When you get there hit a grocery store and buy a case of bottled water (only about $5) and whatever groceries you need.
There was a 10% off coupon for Mc Donalds across from DL thru the Anaheim convention web site too-we used about 4 of these and while it saved us about $5 overall-I bet it would save you more with such a big family.

Just wanted to say that if you stay at HoJo's or Fairfield, Mimi's restaurant is right near by. Their portions are huge and their prices reasonable. You could easily share a large breakfast among several kids and have them so stuffed they might not ask for a treat for at least two hours!

Lunches and dinners are obviously costlier, but also amply portioned - and with small kids, you might be able to eat dinner outside the park on some nights, too.

Dirk

You may even be able to share a few meals, especially among the kiddos.

Have a great trip, and thanks to your DH and your family for your sacrifice! You're all awesome!!!! A friend's son just left for Iraq about a week and a half ago. You will all be in my thoughts!!!!

IHOP also has kids eat free after 4:00pm.

We let my boys pick one thing for them, and then they got a postcard for their teacher and grandparents. This year they got ears. They range in price from $8.50-15.00. Embroidery is free on them. We also get a family gift of a christmas ornament. We had plenty of t-shirts with Disney themes before the parks. For meals my boys 5 & 3 share a meal and DH and I also share a meal. We bring snacks. Last week when we were there we kept it for $200 for the week with food and gifts.

I agree. I have stayed here several times and I cannot recommend it enuf. It's SUPER close, they have a room size for EVERY party and you get free parking (one car per room). They definitely have a suite that would work for your size family. Drawbacks-the pool is cold. Like, C-O-L-D. And the spa was a little dirty-ish the one time we used it. You get a continental breakfast that includes danishes, bread with a toaster next to it with butter and like, 2 or 3 different kinds of jelly, milk, OJ and I THINK apple juice and then apples and bananas. It's not great but hey, it's included in the cost and if you each eat some toast, a piece of fruit, a glass of milk and a danish, that's breakfast! Hope that helps!! And have a GREAT time!!!

I'm a local with only 2 kids, but even we pack our own food for the day. Not only do you save a ton of money, but you spend less time standing in line for food! More time riding!

I have to agree, bring your own snacks, its so much cheaper to do that. Definately off site hotels, and if you can find ones that have continental breakfasts then that will definately save you on money. If you want to have a sit down meal, go off site, if you have small kids I believe that IHOP across the street lets kids under the age of like 10 eat for free.

Give the kids a certain amount of spending money for souviniers and let them choose what they want. When its gone, its gone.

If you choose a hotel, I would also suggest staying somewhere within walking distance because cabs, or shuttles for your family will get costly after awhile.

Other eating habbits is counter service, I have to agree with the others who said so.

Also although there are some who dont like the Anaheim area water, it does help to go up to any counter service and ask for a cup of water. They will give it to you for free. It definately is a cost saver when it normally costs you $3.00 per bottle of water or pop in the park

I actually don't have anything to say about DL. I just wanted to say THANKS to your DH and to you for your service. God speed!!

I've done super-cheap family vacations before when I've been able to drive and I have a microwave where I'm going.
We fill one cooler full of just food for once we're there. We plan one full meal (either lunch or dinner) back at the hotel. Some fav's.....hot dogs (microwaved in a dish w/water), tacos (I cooked up the taco meat and froze it before we left), sloppy joes, my "cheater" spanish rice (lipton spanish rice, chicken or hamburger meat, mexi corn and cheese melted on top), soup and sandwiches, chicken fettucini (Lipton fettucini mix, some broccoli, and diced chix.---I actually bring a can of chicken, it's easier, but you could do it cheaper with regular chicken)......well, you get the idea. For shorter trips, where I didn't have to pack as much, I've brought casseroles and goulosh all prepared. I also love brining our portable gas hibachi and bbq in the parking lot. When we've gone somewhere for a longer period of time, I've also brought my griddle (usually fits great under the back seat of the van, where you can't fit a whole lot else) and sometimes the crock pot. Pancakes are really cheap and filling and the kids love them. I get the Hormel pre-cooked bacon at Sam's club and I can microwave that in moments.
We always pack a separate cooler for the trip. When we bring the grill (and the weather is okay) we stop at parks along the way and let the kids get out and run and eat a nice filling lunch.
As far as tips in the park.....not a whole lot you can do....I agree about bringing in snacks. I saw this posted on the Budget board a long time ago, but it rang true. The poster indicated that she brought a big plastic bin that was filled with snack items (fruit snacks, raisins, granola bars, candy, chips, dried fruit, etc, etc.) and each child had either a fanny pack or a back pack that they carried into the park. Each morning, the kids were told to each get at least two items from their packs. That kept away the "I'm hungry" and "I wants".
Also, I've always found that when kids think of money as "theirs" vs. "mom and dad's" they are much more careful in spending it! So, if you have $80 that they can spend ($10 for each of them), hand them the $10 at the beginning of the trip and tell them they can spend it on anything they want (that you would allow them to have, of course) and that's it. Let them know what you will be covering and that you expect them to cover the rest. If, for example, you will cover one snack and the meals, let them know that anything else, whether food, souvie, or experience comes out of their money.
Make homemade autograph books before you go. Get some big pens (they work better with all the gloved characters) from a local dollar store (I've also seen them in the dollar bins at Target, too.) Print out a bunch of Disney color pages. Buy glo sticks/necklaces from somewhere cheap, and that way when the vendors come around, you won't have to worry about them being left out or anything.
While in the park, collect everything that has any Disney branding...make a game of it with the kids and with the plan to make a family vacation scrap book when you get home. There are tons of things! All the hand outs, maps, schedules, etc. Also, that would maybe stear them towards "finding" good post cards to add to the scrap book, instead of the more expensive finds at the gift shop. Take the time to take a ton of pictures! It also helps focus you back on the "experience" and trying to remember everything.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family for your sacrifices! I'm so happy for you that you get this experience before your DH leave!

Just one thing on the IHOP across the street, it was way more expensive than another IHOP DH and I went to that was about a mile or so away. My only guess is that they upped the prices because of where it is. Denny's seemed that way to us also, so we didn't eat there. The McD's isn't that way though. It could be worth it to check out driving down the road a little. Also the Good Neighbor hotels have "magazines" on the check-in counters that have the Disney calendars on the back, we found a couple of great coupons in there before, one of them was buy one get on free at IHOP (that's why we went to the other IHOP;) ) Here's a link with the coupon for McD's and the Char Warehouse (plus a couple of others). http://www.anaheimoc.org/Articles/Archive/Webpage10153.asp

You mentioned Sea World, if you don't already have those tickets, here's a link for buy an adult ticket, get the childs free, and $10 off the adult ticket. I think it is only good until May 31st though.

Have a great time and God Bless you!
