I am dealing with some undiagnosed illness or disorder right now. I am trying to find out the cause--dr. thinks it is rheumatalogical-- but until we do, she has suggested different ways to help. I don't want to treat something I may or may not have, so one of the things she suggested was eating gluten- free. Help! What are your go to foods? Where do you shop? What restaurants are good for eating gluten-free? Thanks so much!

Best! Stupid autocorrect! How do you fix a title on an iPhone?

My mom is gluten-free. I actually mostly shop at a health food store that stocks a lot of gluten-free food because the owner's father is gluten-free.

Before I discovered that, I'd get a few things at the grocery store - gluten-free pretzel sticks, nut chips, etc. I've found it's pretty easy to eat gluten-free without making special purchases. Lots of meals don't have gluten - salads, meat/poatoes/veggies, etc. I buy the chips for eating tuna salad, nut butters, etc., but could easily eat them with a spoon or carrots.

I've bought gluten-free desserts, but she prefers fruit, applesauce, ice cream, and yogurt anyway so I only buy them on special occasions now.

Do you know what ingredients to look for besides wheat? Barley, barley malt extract, rye, soy sauce, etc?

I find it easiest to shop around the outside edges of the grocery store - fresh meats, veggies and fruits. Rice. Beans. We don't buy a whole lot of "gluten free" items like gf bread, we make them at home or plan meals around something else. Just because the box says gf doesn't mean it's healthy or will make you feel any better!!!

Good luck and I hope you do start feeling great soon :-)

Thanks for the tips. I have no idea what to do. I know no wheat and that certain products say they are gf. I didn't know about soy sauce, rye, and barley.

We eat (mostly) gluten free in the form of the primal diet. We have tried paleo, but really missed cheese :). We skip almost all the gf processed foods and just eat eggs, meat, cheese, fruits, veggies, and some seeds & nuts. If we want a baked good, I will make it with almond or coconut flour. Eleana's pantry is a great blog for gf baking recipes. Marks daily apple, nom nom paleo & paleo parents are all great blogs with lots of basics, too.

It is wwwwaaaayyyyy cheaper to just skip the analogies than to try and recreate your current eating habits with the fakey stuff. It's really not terribly hard. I miss bread, but have learned 20 new ways to make and love cauliflower.

Some people with rheumatic issues also do best when eliminating nightshades too. (tomatoes, onions, eggplant...) YMMV

I've been gluten free for five days for the same reasons. It is hard at first mostly because its a learning curve. I will just eat something and suddenly realize I shouldn't. I am on two perfect days. I did get a frozen gluten free bread from whole foods. When school gets out I will try making my own. I'm also avoiding white sugar and dairy. If I still feel bad I will try the nightjars also but I live in nj and have planted tomatoes. I can't imagine a summer tomatoe free. Eating out is tough and Dh and I like to do this. There is no way to be sure what is in sauces.

100% all this! :)

(Except I am paleo and have eliminated dairy.)

Good luck. I sure love my gluten! :) I don't think gf is starting today: cinnamon rolls for breakfast.
Did they test your rf and ana?
