What is yours?

Joy of Cooking

It's the one I always go to for great recipes. It also has detailed instructions for everything.

That is what inspred this thread.. an article on Yahoo, about that book. Saw it a half hour ago!

Rachael Ray 365: No Repeats--A Year of Deliciously Different Dinners. Most of the recipes (actually not just hers, a lot of others too) I skew and make my own. But I LOVE this one :)

I've got my moms old joy of cooking. Might be time to buy the new version, since this thing is falling apart....but I love it! Has EVERYTHING

I'm kinda fond of a couple of slow cooker books too now that winters coming

Joy of Cooking here as well. I have both the old and the new versions. I admit, I use the old version more than the new but both are still wonderful to have. I don't necessarily use the recipes all the time, but they are awesome starting points for everything. The details are great too!

I have an old cookbook that was put together to sell as a fundraiser for sorority houses that date from the late 60s. I swear I would be lost without it and the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook my mom gave me as a wedding gift. :thumbsup2

I'm good for buying cookbooks but hardly using them. Tell me about Joy of Cooking. Is it for advanced cooks only? What about those of us with basic survival cooking skills?

mickeysgal--there's one cookbook out there you should check out. I think it's called A Man and a Can. All the recipes can be made strictly from canned goods, so they're pretty basic. :thumbsup2

when I first got married a bought a cookbook called "The Settlement Cookbook" I used that for years and still get it out to refer to.

I also have "The Joy of Cooking", but I think since I started with the settlement one, thats the one I always go back to.

I also use the Mark Bittman cookbook A LOT. Other favorites of mine are the original Moosewood Cookbook(we're not vegetarians, but like to eat healthy most of the time), all of Emeril lagasse's books, the Gourmet cookbook and the King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion. I do have a cookbook addiction and have a whole bookshelf in my kitchen. I love getting a new cookbook and read it like a book. On my Christmas list this year is the new whole grain cookbook by King Arthur. Wow, talking about this has inspired me to go make cookies(I did say we eat healthy MOST of the time :rotfl2: ).

"Pots Pans and Pioneers" a 30 plus year old book about real Cajun Cooking (printed in Kansas :lmao: ). The only problem is I have to convert "Cajun Speak" into English and some of the Ingredients arn't sold anymore. And yes I am Cajun. It also has an excelent recipe for Elephant Stew. I can post it if you like. :thumbsup2

I also like "I'm Just Here for the Food" by Alton Brown and "Essentials of Cooking" by James Peterson. Both show you how to cook food, not recipes.

I own over 500 cookbooks, but if I had to pick the ones I pull out the most, they would be:
  • The Joy of Cooking for basic reference and classic dishes.
  • Ina Garten's books (Barefoot Contessa) for simple comfort foods.
  • Marcella Hazan's Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking for Italian!

I think it is the best everyday cookbook there is. Good for just about everybody.
