You want a bag for that?

I like getting plastic bags sometimes since I reuse them. Targets bags are great for used kitty litter, I usually have to double bag Wmart or the grocery store ones. I also use them in my small trashcans at home as well as for when I have yard sales. I also use the nicer ones for gifting so I don't have to wrap, so I like the bag to match. I store them under my kitchen counter and only throw away the wet ones or ones that had meat in them.

I do use recycled bags at the Farmer's Market and outdoor shopping. About every vendor asks if I need a bag. I wash those after use. Toys R Us and Walgreens have really cute ones. I also have a nice collection of Trader Joe insulated ones, my fave is a big blue one with a zipper. I rebag when I get to the car. I have gave gifts with these as the gift bag with happy results.

The better alternative to banning plastic bags is to have biodegradable plastic bags. This way if you need one it is better for the environment. I have started buying biodegradable kitchen can bags from CVS. They are more expensive but I feel better about using them.

I was just thinking about those. Or maybe go back to paper bags.

As a cashier, I can see a couple of things...

One, your brain goes right on auto-pilot. Enough folks in a row who say "no bag please" makes you ask (when a small purchase) if you need a bag. Are they necessarily checking you out to see if you are carrying a big bag already? Maybe, maybe not. Afterawhile you just go on auto and say things without thinking.

I myself always work evenings, so I am in the habit of saying "Have a good night!" at the end of a transaction. Then when I work the day shift, it just slips out (at 9am) because it is part of my "script" Sometimes it comes out without thinking and I feel stupid. I AM NOT STUPID, though :)

Two, the cashier could care less about saving the store two cents. They just ask, and you are welcome to give your preference... cashier will happily do what you request, no skin off their backs... I promise :)

Three, I work at target. In no company info have I heard we are going to charge 20 cents a bag. However we do "credit" the customer 5 cents for every reusable bag. Makes me want to remember to bring them in!

I save and reuse plastic bags... mainly for trash. But I collect so many that even by trying to remember my cloth ones I have a healthy stash of plastic.

The Target bags actually fit around my kitchen trash can. Of course, I don't have/need a humongo trash can in my kitchen... even with a family of 5.

I giggle to myself though when folks come in with reusable bags to buy plastic trash bags... doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose??

Our grocery does that too. And CVS has the tag that gives you $1 in extra bucks every 4th use. My bags have more than paid for themselves by now.

The poster who mentioned Target charging for bags lives in Australia, where some provinces have banned the practice of free plastic bags.

I read the title and thought this thread was funny until today. I went to our local market and they have a very nice flower department. I purchased 4 very large potted orchids a bunch of gerbers, some teas, 4 mangoes, 2 yogurts and df picked up some kind of bread/pastry item didn't even look so I don't know what it was. Point is after loading the orchids and flowers into my carriage the bagger/cashier actually placed the items back into my carriage without a bag I just looked at her and she said some people don't like bags. I wanted to laugh. This is no discount store its abit like wholefoods maybe a little more expensive. I just reached over and bagged my own stuff to which she said oh if you want a bag I can bag them. Was I supposed to juggle back to my car. Now I usually have my reusable bags with me but I really only came for the orchids. But now I know never to leave home without them.

I think maybe I should start hoarding them, like people seem to be doing with lightbulbs. ;)

Hi. I'm MamaLema and I am a plastic bag hoarder. For almost a year now, every store in my city charges 5 cents for a plastic bag. Before they implemented this, I hoarded a LOT of plastic bags. I have had enough for almost a year now. Every once in a while we cross border shop and I hoard bags and add them to my collection. I feel so much better admitting this secret:rotfl:

If my purchase can be stuffed into my purse, put into another bag I have or somehting I can simply carry out, I will say no bag. There are times I will just tell them ahead of time that I can carry it out with no bag. I do reuse bags at my house, but if possible I try not to get any more.

I hadn't heard of that! How long has that been in effect in your area?

its been like that for a few months. i think its all around australia. they say its to be environmentally friendly, but its really just to get more money.

Are you kidding me? :headache: Are they that cheap that they can't afford to give you a bag that cost them a penny? Hello, you just spent money in their store, could have even been a lot of money, but they are going to nickle and dime you over a freakin plastic bag? :sad2:

i know. its ridiculous. and they are over-charging on all their clothing. you pay $50 for a dress thats worth about $30. im pretty anti target right now.

i think the charging for bags thing is just in australia.

I think you are right.

I do most of my shopping at Costco and BJ's, so no bags there. Whenever I go anywhere else I WANT those plastic bags! I use them for stinky diapers.

I'm in Australia too, and yes we pay for bags in Target. I had a conversation with the local checkout girl at the supermarket (national chain) on the weekend who said its expected that they will be doing it there soon. Already, they don't provide bags for 3 items or less.
I have no problem with it. I'd rather carry a couple of items around that contribute more plastic bags to landfill. I feel guilty everytime i say yes to a bag.

I don't know what I'd do with the cat litter if they banned plastic bags!

Same here! The plastic grocery store bags are what I use for the kitty litter. I'd have to buy an awful lot of garbage bags (which really are TOO big for the kitty litter).

Yes, people do not realize scoopable cat litter sticks all over poop. It sinks to the bottom of a container & turns to pure sludge. It would not be easy to clean out of sewage pipes. :headache: My cat will not use any other litter, or I would switch.

I tried to switch her litter once, and mid-poop, she realized it was different. She jumped out of the box, scooted down on her bottom and slid and right on my newly shampooed carpet, like that dog, Toby, in the carpet cleaning commercial.

:rotfl2: I think she was responding to my post. I wrote how kitty litter & feminine pads will be banned someday. Bumbershoot lumped them both into the same paragraph in her response.

:lmao::rotfl2:

That is funny I can just picture the cat when she realized. As for feminine pads I'm all for banning those. After the budget board turned me on to the Diva Cup I'll never use anything else. Now THAT is a happy period. While we're at it lets ban the tampons too. Know how many women just flush em anyway:scared1:
