I got a very pleasant surprise from a stranger online. I wanted advice about how to handle a work situation because I know something that the supervisor does not want for any of us working for him to know. I overheard something that I know the boss was wrong to withhold from my co-workers. I wanted advice on whether I should go behind the boss's back to tell my co-workers the truth since he is not being honest and he already knows that I know the truth anyway.
I was amazed at a message I got from someone who knows only my screen name. He and his wife wanted to know who I was because they felt like they already knew me anyway and would be glad to recommend me for a job that they thought that I would be really good at. I wasn't even asking for a job but how to handle a sticky situation on the job. They are saying that I have shown "the right stuff" on the web site while talking about things completely unrelated to jobs and have been grace under fire during flame wars in which people were trying to provoke me.
The reference they wrote for me was so nice that it nearly drove me to tears, and I have never met these people before in my life. You never know who is online with you.
