Day 2: Tuesday, May 28
The night before, I set my alarm for 8 am, not planning to make early entry so I can get a little bit extra sleep. However, I’m surprised when I wake up at 7:30 am, and end up getting to the park by 8:30! But it looks very different from yesterday morning around this time.
Walking toward the entrance from the bus, there is a HUGE crowd backed up a few hundred feet. It takes 30 minutes to get to the entrance, and I enter the park right at 9:00 am. I’m a bit nervous about what the park will be like with this many people around!
Since I’ve pretty much missed early entry, I decide to start my day almost the exact same as yesterday! I head right to Isle of Berk to ride Hiccups. I am able to ride it twice before the line builds up too much.
Remembering the delicious mango bread, I decide to head to Oak and Star Tavern again. Once there, I am frustrated as the mango bread seems to have disappeared from the mobile order! What?! Nooooooo!!!
Talking with the servers, it seems they were out of stock, but JUST got some back in. I have another 20 minutes before it fully shows up in the app and I’m able to order it.
A server is kind enough to take my picture with my food!
It is just as good as it was yesterday!!
I think I could eat this for breakfast every single day!!
After finishing, I leave before the live entertainment starts and head back to Isle of Berk to ride Wing Gliders. I’ve never been on this type of ride before. I’ve heard mixed reviews, with some people saying it is boring and others deciding to skip it altogether.
It is so much fun! This ends up being one of my favorite rides in the park. It’s like you are floating and you have such a good view of everything above you. I don’t try to flip as I am pretty sure from what I’ve read that I will be unable to do so.
The only disappointing part of the ride is that it only goes for 3 circles/rotations. I could stay up here forever if allowed!
As I look in the app to decide what to do next, I notice that several rides are down, and the others are starting to build long lines, with most at 60+ minutes. I decide to try Yoshi.
I am not sure if I will be able to do the ride or not - it is outside and goes through SNW - which I can't hang out in very long. However, I figure in the worst case I'll close my eyes and duck down, and let the ride carry me away if it's too much.
I dash over to SNW, beeline for Yoshi, get my 60 minute return time, and exit the land.
While waiting, I head to Darkmoor to the Windmill tavern. I really want to try a garlic stake!
I go inside first, but it is extremely small, only 3 tables, and find out you can only order drinks here: food is only available at the standup counter outside.
So I mobile order my food, but wait standing inside so I can at least enjoy some of the atmosphere as well as the air conditioning. Going outside, the door is extremely heavy, and almost impossible to open!
When I go to pick up my food, there is a sample Monocane Cocktail sitting on the counter:
I can’t remember why I didn’t get one, as this is a drink I want to try. I think maybe because of the cost. Oh well – it is on my list for a future trip!
Outside there are only 3 tables as well. This place has a severe lack of seating options. All are occupied, so I figure once I get my food, I’ll have to go somewhere else to eat. But as I’m walking away, a person sitting at the table in the corner gets up. Score! I have a seat
I enjoy the flavor of the garlic stake, but the bread is a little bit dry and hard. For the cost and the toughness, I am not sure if I would get this again, although I am glad I tried it.
While I am there, a vampire hunter comes by and starts interacting with the guests!
He sticks around for a good 20 minutes or so, but doesn’t come over to where I am, most likely because I"m tucked into the back corner. It is fun watching him interact with the other guests.
It is now time for me to return to Yoshi. The express line goes quickly, and I am soon on the ride.
Despite having been worried if the travel through the SNW land would be too much, I find that being so high above the rest of the land helps, and I am actually able to look around and enjoy the sights! Just for this, I really like the ride, even though it would otherwise be a bit too tame for me.
Unfortunately I do not have pictures to share as I almost never take out a camera on rides.
Finishing Yoshi, I decide to try Minekart Madness again. It’s got a 2 hour+ wait, but by this time, so does everything else in the park - there's still several rides out of commission, and it seems those crowds from the morning were a good predictor of the rest of the day. I do really want to ride Minekart, so I go ahead and get a return time and then head over to Isle of Berk to explore.
When there, I see that the Untrainable Dragon is about to start a show and it is very hot, so I decide to try it. I never know if I will be able to do a full show or not due to sensory overload. I come prepared with a hat and my headphones and take a selfie before the show starts.
I also snap a picture of the stage.
The show is lots of fun, and I really enjoy it as well as the story. Watching Toothless fly over the audience multiple times is amazing and my favorite part of the show. I also know it is the closest I will be to the Dragon during the trip as the line for the meet and greet will almost certainly be too long for me the whole time, and the AAP can't be used for character greets. I had to miss out on meeting the Grinch last December for the same reason :/
After the show, I head back to Minekart Madness, and guess what? It’s broken down. This time I actually go all the way to the ride and talk to a cast member. I show him my APP/return time. He asks me how many people are in my party. I reply 1. He reaches into his back pocket, pulls out two papers, looks at them, and hands them to me.
Walking away, I realize they are “ruby passes,” basically 2 free express lanes good for
any ride in
Epic. Including Ministry. What??
I’ve been pixie dusted again. He knew he was handing me two and not just one – he specifically looked at what was in his hand before giving them to me. I also realize later he didn’t cross off my return time.
Looking at the app, I try to decide what to do next. It is still pretty early, a little after noon, and I’d like to stay a bit longer before taking a break. BUT…I realize in the app, like over half of the rides are currently on delay. Everything else is a 2-3 hour wait.
This looks brutal – even with a return time, I don’t think I would be able to access any attractions due to probable back-up in the express lanes. Restaurants would almost certainly be the same.
There’s also rain in the forecast in the evening, so I decide to head back to the hotel for an early break, hoping the park will have better operations when I return, and maybe be able to get a couple of hours in the park before the rain hits this evening.
