You know how the name La-a always shows up in the silly name threads?

I was starting the Federal Financial Aid form for DS19 for college next year. In the instruction box for entering the student name it says "no special characters like /, ?, - .. So, does that mean that La-a can't go to college .

Well she can but she just has to pay for it herself and not use Financial Aid

I'll tell you, that "no special characters" thing bugs the you-know-what out of me. Our last name has an apostrophe in it. It's the LEGAL spelling of our last name. All these companies that can't figure out how to properly program their computers to accept the apostrophe are, in effect, changing our last name without our consent. I've had people tell me that it's no big deal, but it isn't their last name that's getting changed. Also, this no apostrophe thing has people not being able to pronounce our name correctly. Makes me crazy!

My kid has a two-word, no-hyphen last name, and it's about 50:50 whether a given computer system will be able to get it right.

My maiden name has a period in it. Similar to St. Claire. Sometimes when filling out forms on line, I have to try five or six different ways until the computer will accept the name. No period and just a space, period and no space, period and one space, no period and no space and lastly, St. spelled out (Saint). Jeeeesh!

Don't know how but I somehow got financial aid for college.

Oh, I forgot one. Sometimes I have to leave off the "St." completely.
