I am by no means an expert, but I thought I'd seen somewhere on the Ebay pages that food is a prohibited item.

eBay lists it under questionable, because there are some rules and suggestions (mostly suggestions)..but what the OP was stalking about is fine:

Food
The following list contains general guidelines for listing food items on eBay.

Federal and State Regulations. The sale of food is regulated by the federal government and most state governments, and users that list food and food-related products should familiarize themselves with these laws before listing such items on eBay.

For example, there are federal and state laws that require labels to state, among other things, the food's ingredients, nutrition information, and place of manufacture. Virtually all states require food manufacturers and sellers to register with or obtain a license from the state. There are also restrictions on the import and export of many food products. The links below can be used as a starting point for sellers to educate themselves about laws relating to food sales:

http://www.foodsafety.gov - Gateway to Government Food Safety Information
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/list.html - FDA's Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/ - USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service
http://www.nfpa-food.org/ - National Food Processors Association
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/imports.html - FDA Import Procedures
Perishable Items - Sellers that list perishable items should clearly identify in the item description the steps that they will take to ensure that the goods are delivered to the buyer safely. For example, sellers of perishable goods should offer overnight delivery and ensure that the goods are properly packaged.

Sealed Containers - All food and related products sold on eBay should be packaged or sealed to ensure that the buyer can identify evidence of possible tampering.

Expiration Dates - All items must be delivered to buyers prior to a clearly marked expiration or "use by" date.

Prohibited Food Items - For the safety of our users, you may not list the following food and food-related items on eBay:

Listings containing drug claims-that is, a claim that the item is intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in humans and/or animals (e.g., pharmaceutical drugs, contact lenses, misbranded dietary supplements)
Non-pasteurized dairy products
Fruit and vegetable juice products that have not been heat pasteurized
Wild mushrooms

Two minutes after my auction ended -- and it was a relist -- someone e-mailed me to ask if I'd consider selling the item for less. I told her I would be putting it back up the first week in March (after we get back from WDW) for $2.50 less than my current asking price. She replied with an offer to buy it today (for $3 less than the asking price). I responded that as a brand-new eBayer, I was too scared to break the rule about selling outside of eBay. But I did give her more specifics about my new listing date and offered to start the bidding at her price.

Has this happened to you in the past? How do you handle it?

I would sell the item direct, without relisting. There is nothing that says that if you items has closed that you can not sell it direct to an interested party.

I sold an item direct, after the auction ended. Saved myself the final value fees, at least. But I sold it for the same price I had it listed - the girl just forgot abut the auction before the end and was willing to pay the same price.

Vent/question - I had a couple auctions end last night (around 9 pm), and one lady bought two things. I state in my auctions that I combine shipping (even have a link to my other auctions) and to contact me if combined shipping prices. So I go to bed after sending my invoices. This morning, I have two emails from the lady - one asking about combined shipping and another paying me with Paypal... Um, way to wait for my answer! She paid for double shipping. Can I refund her part of the shipping (and how?)

If it doesn't cost you to do it, I would just refund with the paypal send money feature. If it does, I would send the refund with the product.

Why not just slip cash into the package?

:o I actually thought of that after I posted here. I gave her the option of Paypal or cash in the package, and she chose cash.

This looks interesting...and it's not too far from me. There's an ad in the NJ Star Ledger advertising this auction.

I probably won't be able to go due to work. There's another one in April though, I may check that one out.

Just wanted to give another vote of confidence for amazon.com book sales! After seeing it discussed on this thread, I listed 10 books......4 have sold, including one for $69! Woo-hoo! (It was a textbook, wish I had more of them!) Very easy to list over there, although it seems to be tough to get feedback--I don't think a lot of people realize they are buying from a person, not a business so it doesn't occur to them to leave feedback. Still, even with my "I'm new" rating, I'm still getting sales!

Just got back from our trip! What have I missed? Anything going on on eBay I need to know? How are sales going?

WB Jennymouse. I can't report on sales because I haven't listed since before Christmas. But I am getting ready to jump in again. Hope you had a wonderful trip!

My question today (I always seem to have one) is where best to list a hardcover book (unused). It is several years old. I should have brought it back to the store when it was first given to me but didn't. I know there has been mention of half.com and amazon.com. What are the differences between those two? Thanks!

Jennymouse, glad to hear you're back. Hope you and Dad had a terrific time! How was the weather? ...................P

I am interesting in "ebaying" as well and have learned alot from this board. I have this question-What do you base your postage rates on since they are determined by your shipping destination?
Thanks for your help!

The first step of course it to make sure you weigh your item packaged for proper weight. I based everything on a Zone 8 shipping, for the West Coast use 10019 (NY. NY), on the east coast use 90210 (Beverly Hills, CA). For in between just play around with Zips until you find one that is a zone 8.

After listing some stuff on Amazon, I really don't think that there is that much of a difference. They both supply you with a pic (if avalible),but on Half.com you can also down load one of your item. I did not see a place to do this on Amazon. Plus the fees are more on Amazon. I think it was like .99 cents final listing fee and then a % of the sale. On ebay it is just a % of the sale. Amazon gives you the option of shipping three was: media, express and international. While Half.com just gives you two: media and express.

Half.com payes you twice a month, while Amazon only pays you once a month. For both, they transfer the money into the bank account that you list with them when you sign up to sell.

Also don't forget that you can list books on ebay. Depending on the book, it can do quite well.

We had rain when we arrived and some the next day, but after that it was dry. It started of kinda cool, but kept getting warmer & warmer. It was actually hot the last couple days.

Dad had a great time as long as I kept him out of MK. He loved Epcot, AK & MGM in that order. MK was always so crowded and the little ones kept darting in front of his ECV in thier excitement and it made him nervous that he was going to run over someone.

All of my auctions ended last Sunday (2/1) as my first foray into Ebay since our Disney trip in December. Everyone paid immediately except for one auction. My terms are contact within 3 days and payment within 7. So, today I did the first step in the NPB procedure. Of course, tonite when I get home the guy has paid; however, I now find out that his address is in Englance. So, I'm sure shipping will be higher. If he had contacted me and provided his address as my terms request, then I would have told him the additional shipping prior to his payment. Would you just email him and tell him what the difference is in shipping?

First, I don't think 7 days is enough time to allow for payment..just my own opinion. Letters from CA sometimes take that, and I still have to give people time to get a money order, or out to pick up a stamp, or time to get over the flu or whatever. That being said, I would ask for the additional shipping cost before shipping the item. I send out my own end of auction notices, and make note of the state and zip eBay has on their notice, so I can do a correction at that time to shipping, if it's international. I assume this is going to England? When would this person have found out the shipping was more? Is it in your description? Or your end of auction notice?

:wave2:

I'm back on the thread - but still not back on eBay.. :( Still too wiped out to do much of anything..

I wanted to comment on the 7-day payment thing.. I too believe that it should be at least 10 days.. I've received payments from CA that were mailed the very next morning and still took 10 days to get here (NY)..

Also - I wanted to mention in general.. I'm helping another gal get started with eBay and last night she asked me to view her auctions and see why they weren't generating any bids.. Here's what I saw:

(1) EVERY item had a reserve on it.. (And they were just everyday used items..)

(2) VERY strict payment options - with some of it "shouted" in caps.

(3) Extremely negative comments (again in caps) about "must" this, "must" that, "non-payers will be reported to eBay IMMEDIATELY", etc..

I don't know WHERE she came up with these ads, but it sure as heck wasn't anything that I told her!! If I looked at her ads I would hit the back button so fast it wouldn't even be funny..

I told her nicely what I thought the problems were and hopefully she'll listen - but I just wanted to remind any new eBayers that placing reserves on everything and screaming negativity in your auctions is really not a good way to go..

-----------------------

Two weeks with NOTHING up on eBay! I can't believe it.. I sure hope I feel well enough soon to get back in the saddle.. Missing all this time from work and spending a boat load of money on doctors and meds, that extra money sure would come in handy.. Maybe tomorrow.......... I can dream, right?????????
