Since there are now bids you can not change your description but you can ADD to it. I would add this to the description and email the highest bidder (and lower bidders if you choose), along with a photo of the damage and give them the option of still buying it or not. If they choose to not purchase the item, I would cancel their bid but leave the auction up.

The winner of my halloween costume just wrote to me refusing to pay. She found the same product on a 40% off sale and refused to make good on her bid.

Did you file a NPB before you made your second chance offer? If you did, that will be on her ebay account. As far as her attitude goes I would email her back and just tell her that you are running an auction and have nothing to do with any store or how they price their inventory. (nor is it your job or responsiblity to monitor store sales) She should accept responsiblity for her actions...no one made her bid, she did that all on her own.
I am so glad that you were able to close your sale with a 2nd chance offer....your original bidder sounds like bad news all around and I am sure she would have been a problem for you one way or another.....block her.

I don't know about being able to leave feedback on her as I haven't been in your situation....possibly someone else will be able to give you more info on the feedback.

But, now since the original bidder is not the final sale I don't see how I can leave feedback on her.

She is still the "original" final sale. You can leave feedback, and so can she.

Second chance is generally used if the first bidder doesn't honor the sale, or if you have duplicates. It doesn't negate the first sale, but adds to it. I wouldn't post her note (where you leaving that as feedback?) that she wrote about telling people they could find the item for a lesser amount. Personally, I would file to get your fees back (since you paid the final auction fees, regardless if you did a second chance..you would have paid for both sales) which would leave a mark on her file..and then move on. You won't have lost a thing, and I have no doubt she'll leave you a neg in return, if you neg her. If you don't care, then you could leave something like "bid & won..then backed out and didn't pay".

Goo Gone works for me on many things....I did get ink out of the carpet with it.....maybe it will work on rubber.

Thanks to kilee & dg39 for the information on AOL 8.0. I do have 6.0 on my computer presently.

I remembered seeing a disk for AOL 8.0 at the post office last week and, since I had to pick up the mail anyway, I headed over there on my lunch break. Oh, my goodness! There wasn't a parking place open and the traffic was backed up into the street (this is a good-sized post office serving a large business park and surrounding homes)! Inside was even busier!

Obviously, I forgot yesterday was a holiday! Let's just say I picked up the mail and beat a hasty retreat. I'll try again on Thursday! :) That should allow everything to settle down to normal!

I did too, but I guess that's a good thing, in a way because I was suppose to mail out a package but didn't make it to the PO because DD is sick. Today was PACKED!

This is nerve wracking. There are no bids on my two items after two nights. Is this normal?

YEE HAW!!!! Thank you for this thread C.Ann and all who have contributed!

Last weekend I listed 14 items, the most I've had at one time. By tonight (the 14th of Oct) I have sold all but 5 of them. Some of those I attempted for the 3rd time, with no results (2 had reserve prices). To Date (since 8/25/03) my profit is just shy of $150 after all the fees for ebay and PayPal have been deducted. More than 70% of the final bids are in my pocket. Overall I've lost more than $25 ( :( in under charging for shipping- I under-estimated the weight of a UPS shipment and paid out a refund for breakage, that added to that high rate. I've since purchased a cheap bathroom scale ($6 at Walmart) and I weighed these last items before shipping, but not before listing. I figured pretty closely to the actual charges before going to the post office. My listed charges weren't too far off as a result of past shipments, knowing what similar weights postage cost.

Also, I finally found a suitable digital camera, at least for ebay purposes - a Vivitar Vivicam 10 at Walmart for less than $50. Until now I've primarily used a flatbed scanner, but it's hard to scan clothes and bulky items. The Vivicam 10 has a flash and takes somewhat decent pictures (640x480 res.), good enough for this purpose. I was holding out for a digicam with all the features I wanted, including an LCD screen, optical zoom and higher resolution for next year's WDW trip, but I won't have any listings if I hold my breath, so I picked this one up to use in the meanwhile. If (when) I get my upgraded camera, I'll either be giving this one to DD or listing it on ebay.

So, now I've shared a succesful week on ebay. Is the buying end of the auctions picking up? It's time to get to work on next week's listings. Maybe I'll download Turbo Lister and get a head start- that's if I can get PC time, as DH is on first shift this week and hogs the PC when he comes home. :earseek:

Ebay goal #1 - anything extra for WDW 2004,
goal #2 a 2nd home computer.

Very normal....sometimes I have no bids on some items until the last few minutes of the auction.

I think we all in the beginning lose money on shipping. I now use eBays calculated shipping charge, not flat shipping anymore, and add the handling charge to it automatically. The handling charge is not shown to the buyer.

As for the broken item, any object that is possibly breakable you might consider requiring insurance. This takes it off of you and might prevent you from having to refund the money. Sometimes refunds ARE necessary for good customer service depending on the situation.

I agree, the most common mistake of beginners to Ebay is to underestimate postage (speaking from my own experience). I once charged $15 shipping for a lamp that ended up costing $22 to ship--that was my biggest postage error.

Since I sell mostly books, postage is a lot easier--I generally charge a flat fee for shipping, and I make it a bit higher for heavy books and lower for light paperbacks. I include a handling fee for my shipping materials and for delivery confirmation (I downloaded Shipping Assistant from the USPS, so my Media Mail delivery confirmation is only 13 cents per item).

On the rare occasions I ship fragile items, I always include insurance in the shipping price, and I state this in the auction.

I started out selling internationally, but decided I don't have time to deal with all the ins and outs of international postage and the demands of overseas bidders. However, I think it can be good for people who sell niche items overseas--I've heard there are certain items that sell very well internationally.

Thought you all might enjoy this:
A person won one of my auctions I quoted them parcel post price since it was cheaper then Priorty. When they paid with Paypal it had the priorty price so they paid it. So I get the item all wrapped up in a priorty box and labeled when I get this:
Can you refund me the
difference or maybe include some child's book or toy
(I saw you had some posted)?
My jaw hit the floor
 . The nerve of some people!
That was my laugh for the week:rolleyes: .

Thanks for all the suggestions on removing ink from my item. Well, nothing worked, its still there. I tried the goo gone and I even had the magic eraser(I got one in the mail as a sample, full size too). Anyway, I did what one poster said and took a picture of it and sent it to the highest bidder. She was thankful that I sent it and also stated that she still hopes she wins because the ink mark is very small and she doesn't care about it. Its not a big mark, maybe about an inch, but if I didn't let her know about it I would have been nervous sending it out and getting a neg. Thanks for all your help in this...

I am glad that it seems to have all worked out. Be sure to edit your auction with this info, so future bidders will know "going in" that the item now has this "flaw"

Well I emailed the person and told him that if I didn't receive the item back soon, I wouldn't be able to give a complete refund. He finally responded yesterday with a nasty email telling me he had just mailed it. I will probably go ahead with the refund if the item is not working.

I was just wondering if any of you have a refund policy and how does it work. I did not have one stated in my TOS but since this has happened I'm making sure to have some sort of refund policy on all other auctions from now on.

Also, has anyone had any luck selling girls holiday dresses? I have some to list and I'm wondering if I should list them now or wait a while?

Thanks! :D

Have you tried a product called Cordoba (or Cordova...I cant remember). You can find it in many stores, in the detergent aisle. It comes in small bottles...about 20 or so, each one for a different type of stain. I have had tremendous luck with using this. I buy it at the local Wal-Mart.

Carbona was the only thing I didn't have on hand. I have to go to Sams Club tonight, maybe they'll have it and I'll pick it up. I use that also for stains. It works great.

When I went to my auction page, it wouldn't let me into the description page. I probably overlooked it. Can anyone tell me where it is?

I find some of these stories so amazing. They are quite humorous (not for you as a seller) but it is amazing the things people say and do. I can't believe the one where the husband emailed and said, "My wife didn't have permission to use my checking account ..." What is this? The 1950s???? Or the lady who won't pay because she found it cheaper somewhere else. And somehow it was the seller's fault for not telling her to shop around??????

My story isn't nearly as bad, but I feel the need to vent. I have a buyer who tried to pay me with a credit card. When I denied it she said that my "RESTRICTIONS" caught her unaware. Huh?? I have it in 18 point font in my Item Description that I do not accept credit cards through paypal. It is also in my Payment instructions. AND I do not have the Paypal button clicked. Oh well.

Anyway, here is my question. When you pay buy an eCheck or whatever it is called do you have to transfer money to the paypal account first and then pay? or can you just pay with your eCheck? I have never done this and I have a buyer who is asking me.

Thank you. And thanks again for starting this thread.

Maggie

I believe, their account would have no money in it, and they have it atached to a checking account. Paypal then takes the money from their checking account. At least when I've had clients apologize for making me wait, that's the story they give : )
