Checking into class!!

I have a few things up that end either Sunday or Monday, and two have bids on them, but several have been viewed many times. Seems like everyone is waiting until the last minute to bid.

-------------------

Last night I received emails from 3 different people with questions on 3 different auctions - but still no bids.. Same thing happened with my last bunch of auctions and the items ended up selling on the last day.. I definitely think the "last minute bid" trend is holding steady right now.. Considering it wasn't that way when I first started selling (late March), I have to wonder if it's the "season" or a new trend that is going to continue..

As long as I SELL the stuff, it doesn't really matter - but it sure makes for a BORING week when I don't see any action..

Hope everyone does well this weekend !! My auctions aren't ending until later in the week..

I just started selling on E-bay and have made $41.00 off of an old Swatch watch. Just heading out to the neighborhood garage sales to find more stuff!!! I have some ponchos from WDW I wonder if those would sell??? It always seems to rain at least once while we're in Orlando. (That's probably why we've amassed 7 of them.)
Well wish me luck!!

Well, out of my first 6 auctions ending, I sold 5 items. I guess I probably made twice as much as I would have if I had sold them at a yard sale.
I have a few more ending in a couple of days. I'm hoping I can make enough $ to cover the cost of the hotel on our drive to WDW in 3 weeks!

List, list, list.... Nothing else to do on a rainy weekend - right?

I'm "Disney Dreamin'".... Ahhhhhhhhh...

I WILL go to Disney in December!!!!!!!!!!

Over the last 3 days I have read this entire thread and learned ALLOT. Thanks! I have actually been selling in eBay since 1999 but hadn't sold anything for while during my pregnancy and recovery period. My baby is now 2 1/2 months old and we as a family are itching to go to WDW in late October. So it is back to eBay for me! Currently I have 11 auctions on with more going up tomorrow. Just one item has a bid so far and I am a little concerned about that bidder. He/she has a -1 rating on eBay. They have only bid on one auction and apparently they didn't pay for the item, or respond to the sellers' emails so the seller left negative feedback. So now I am concerned that he/she will be a Non-Paying Bidder for my auction. :(

I hit one garage sale on my way to work this morning and bought a Minnie Mouse sleeping bag, comforter set and Disney sheets. Should I sell the items as one big lot even though they don't all match?

Well I FINALLY got a couple of bids a little while ago!! Gee - I was beginning to think I lost my touch..

Also just listed some more stuff and have been taking photos of a bunch of things I hope to get up tonight or tomorrow..

Don't those buyers know it's RAINING out there - and therefore they should be INSIDE placing bids on my items????? LOL

Yep - I'm gonna make it to Disney - one way or another!!!

Me again!! I just got a bid on something that literally just hit the auction page!! WooooooooHoooooooo!

If this is what a rainy weekend does for me, come ON rain - LOL!!

Would you folks believe I am SOOOOOO committed to earning money for this trip to Disney in December I have STOPPED going up to my summer place at the lake?? Now THAT is detemination! Normally I would be up there - all settled in - by the middle of April or May 1st at the latest and I wouldn't come back home till mid-October...

Greed......plain, simple GREEEEEEED... LOL

Zippity do dah! I'm going' to Disney !!!!

After reading this thread I finally started selling on ebay last week. I only put up a few things and sold all but 1 (a scanner). So I relisted it and it ends later today. I just checked and there is 1 bid, but the buyer is from the Ukraine. On my auction it states that I only ship to the US and Canada. I was wondering what I should do about this?

You've got a few options (that I'm aware of)

You could find out the pricing and ship to there (buyer paying all costs of course). If you know the weight of the package, go to USPS.com and click calculate shipping (international) and it'll give you options & pricing.

I belive you can cancel the person's bid?

You can hope that they get sniped by someone else at the last minute

When they win, you can email them and let them know that they didn't follow your terms of service and you will not ship there. You can then file for FVF (final value fees w/ ebay).

Maybe DMRick or someone w/ more experience can give you more info!

Returning a check....

As you all may recall, I had a buyer who sent a check although my auction stated I do not accept checks. I've emailed him three times, even using a different email account once in case for some reason my email might not have gone through. In my last email I said that I need to hear from him by today, but that regardless I would be returning the check tomorrow, and needed to know which of the payment methods I specified in the auction they will use.

I don't think this person is going to respond at all. I think they are around, they have been bidding on other things, so I don't think they are sick, etc.

Can anyone think of a reason *not* to mail the check back? Or any other precautions I should take? My plan is to mail the check back with a letter saying I need to hear from them by email by 6/6 as to how they will pay, and that if I don't have acceptable payment by 6/9, I will.......will what???? I'm not quite sure what to say, LOL. Do I say I will consider them a NPB? Do I say I will be making a second chance offer to the next highest bidder? What do I say to make it clear I'm going to do as I please with this item now? Are they a NPB because they won't pay me with a form of payment I specified? I really just want to move past this buyer, I just don't know how I *end* this. At this point I don't care if he's going to pay or not, I just want to know, and be freed of the waiting! The auction ended 5/18, so it has already been two weeks.

Thanks for any help.

wdwpluto~Thank you for the info. The auction just closed and I'm still not sure what I should do. Should I email them and tell them that I stated that I only shipped to the US? If anyone has any suggestions or advice I would like it.

Thanks!

Laura

You have two choices. You can certainly send the check back with a copy of your auction listing that states very clearly that you do not accept checks. If by chance you did not state that clearly in the listing, i.e. the listing text, not just the payment type checkboxes, then I don't see why you can't just relist and eat the lost fees. My guess is that you didn't spell it out clearly, or your listing has conflicting information. It's easy to do that. If this is not true, then who knows what their motivation is.

However, if you are willing to take the risk of a bounced check, you could also deposit the check and wait for it to clear your bank. Ask them how long this takes. My bank takes five days. If it clears the bank, then ship the item and send them an explanation that you made an exception for them that you will not do in the future. This is what I would do in your situation. It's a win-win situation.

I am finding that people don't take the time to read auction listings thoroughly unless you make them easy to read. That is why I put mine up using composed HTML. If they don't see the terms of my auction then they didn't even try to look. They may be using automated searching/bidding software that doesn't take this into account

Do you have more than one bidder? If so I would email the winning bidder that your auction stated US only destinations and that you will deny any payment for the auction. If you take paypal or other electronic payment methods you might want to inform them of the situation and ask if they can block payment.

Then I would contact the next bidder in line and offer them a chance to buy it at the winning bid price. If not, take a reasonable offer taking into account that if you simply cancel the auction that the Ukranian won, that you will eat the fees.

As I mentioned to ByJiminy, next time be very clear *** inside your auction listing*** about your terms. Do not rely on the eBay listing checkboxes as everyone ignores them.

Good luck to both of you and I hope that everything works out for the best.

Thanks for your thoughts, shovelhd. I did spell it out in the listing, after I described the item I mentioned payment and specifically mentioned no checks, and again in the payment terms, so it would be clear. Now I've changed my listings and made that a separate paragraph in capitals. I sort of feel that comes off as negative, shouting about my payment terms, but I guess people do not read. I thought when you bid you were agreeing to the payments stated, that was part of the contract of bidding. I often do not bid on things because I do not wish to pay via their accepted methods. So I have no idea what their motivation is/was. They went through checkout and indicated they would pay by money order/cashiers check, so that is what I was expecting.

I don't take checks, and I'm not going to make an exception on this now. It's a PITA for me to make deposits, let alone taking a risk of a bounced check from someone like this buyer. If they had replied after the first email I sent asking very nicely for me to take it, maybe I would have. But after not even replying to three emails, I'm not going out of my way to do them a favor.

I have six auctions ending tonight, and if they are as difficult to deal with as my first batch, I think I'm done with selling on Ebay!

"Other" Laura, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with the bidder from Ukraine, but I have to say I'm a bit relieved as I was starting to think I was the only one running into these complicating issues all the time! I have no idea if mailing there would require extra forms or something. Did you state a specific shipping cost in your auction? My auctions all say I only ship to US (as if people read, LOL) but I don't really know if it would be a big hassle to ship elsewhere, I've just never done it and I was trying to keep things simple! I also list the shipping costs in the auction, and I'm sure I couldn't ship to Ukraine for the same cost as I can to California, which is what I try and base the costs on.

I ship internationally all the time..it's just one more simple form to fill out. Shipping is very easy to find out at the post office on line. If you give us the weight, and measurements, I can give you that cost. Or you can tell them you do US only..it's your auciton and your terms. You'll get back your end of listing fees, although you won't get back your listing fee, unless you relist and it sells.

Ukraine hasn't bought from me yet..and not to worry you..but several people make them pay with Bidpay..I guess they have a rep for doing chargebacks on Paypal.

As far as strange things happen...believe me, I've had my share LOL! They happen less often now, because I think I have it more figured out now!

I don't like having to take up so much listing space spelling out the obvious, either. I wish I could be as friendly as possible with everyone, and I am whenever a buyer or potential buyer asks questions. But there are so many people knowingly or unknowingly violating, and often abusing eBay policy now that I am not willing to support it. If this means that my listings have to come off as arrogant then that's the price that has to be paid. I support your stance with this check paying buyer, and I hope that you have better luck the next time around.

I used to ship internationally, as international bids, at least the legitimate ones, tend to be higher than US bids. I had several problems with eBay and international buyers and have since dropped the practice. I will ship to Canada on request, though, as that is pretty easy to do. Just a customs form. However I prefer to deal with those stateside.
