Robinb, thanks for explaining the book shipping costs for me. I appreciate it! :D I am sure wishing that I didn't let my mother donate my wedding gown a few years ago.... and I am going to check on the Halloween costumes, too. Great ideas! :D

Hi everyone! It has taken me days to get through all these posts...but so much information! This is something I've been wanting to do for so long, but thought it would be too difficult. After reading, I am ready to do it! I took my daughter, son-in-law and 2 grandsons to Disneyworld in May. This was the first time for them and my daughter and oldest grandson (4 yrs) are now just as hooked as I am...lol. The 4 yr old talks about Disney every day, so now we are planning another trip in May. Hopefully I can sell enough on Ebay to fund some of the trip. I'm so excited! I'll probably wait until after Labor day to try for the first time. Just wanted to say "Hi" and thank everyone for so much information!

Hey, shay425!

They do say "hey" in your part of Tennessee, right?

Welcome! I remember taking a day just reading this loooooong thread and I cannot believe how my life has changed since that day. eBay has changed so much about me, but the best part is I've learned how to make money instead of constantly SPENDING it!

I can't wait to get started selling on e-bay. There is so much to learn, and I am not too smart with the computer. But I am going to give it a try. What are the best selling items right now? Does anyone have any suggestions about how many items to list at once?

I had been toying with selling on ebay. We have WDW ressies for the 1st week of Dec but actually going depends on a copule of things - not the least of which is finances. My boys have outgrown a lot of their toys. With school starting next week, I think I will make Ebay my Sept project.

Was doing a little research earlier because I'm up to the lake and can't list from here and I noticed that Halloween items are beginning to sell already - and not just costumes either.. Makes sense because it usually takes a week for auctions to end and then time to collect money, ship, etc., so people really can't wait till October to list..

Guess I need to drag out my spooky stuff when I get home..;)

Now that's what I meant before when I asked what kind of items are best to sell now!!!

I'm sorry..I misunderstood your question. I thought you wanted to know what sells good on eBay since you asked

"What are the best selling items right now?"

...that particular question has been asked several times in this thread, as well as on other boards. I didn't understand you to mean what kind of items are best to sell now, as you said in your second note.

The best way to find out what you should start putting up now, would be to do the research like CAnn is doing. Since we all have different items in our cellars and attics, it may not help for us all to mention what sells for us, since the chances of you having the same thing would prob be slim. Look at what's in your attic, go to eBay and click on search. Then click on on advanced, and then put in an item you are interested in seeing how it's done. Then check the completed auction box.

Almost anything will sell if you put it up cheap enough..but obviously, you'll have to look at items you own to see what they are getting if you want a fair price.

I checked my email this morning and I thought I had gotten another duplicate message on an item I had sold. But to my surprise one of my bidders had taken me up on a second chance offer - woo hoo.

I keep my shipping as low as I possibly can and also add Delivery Confirmation to everything out of my OWN pocket as an added benefit for both myself AND the buyer.. I know that sooner or later I'm probably going to take a beating because my S&H is so low, but I would much rather try to be fair than to gouge people..
C.Ann,
Just wanted to let you know that if you go to the USPS site and print your own priority labels, they will include free Delivery Confirmation. Since you mentioned that you are shipping light items, the difference between priority and postal can be a matter of a dime or so....and with the free supplies for priority and free delivery confirmation maybe that will help you not take so much of a beating!!!

Thanks for the heads-up, Claudia, but I don't do that anymore.. That's when I was a "newbie"..;) I finally figured out how to get the Shipping Assistant program to work and I use that now to get the 13-cent DC.. Now that I sell and ship a wide variety of items Priority isn't something my buyers are willing to pay for so everything is Parcel, First Class, or Media..

It was nice of you to point that out though! :)

What is the difference between parcel, first class and priority mailing? I've just been shipping priority. Would it be better if I switched?

The biggest difference is cost and how fast it is delivered. It is really up to you and the buyers how something is shipped. I generally ship everything parcel or media (I have been selling a lot of books, videos, etc). Ocasionally I will ship Priority, usually only when the item cost only 10-cents less parcel (generally around 1#).

The main difference is the shipping cost involved. On my auctions I always enter the shipping calculator for priority, but in my auction I will add that if a buyer prefer a different shipping method to email me before they bid for a price. Most of the items that I auction are not heavy...under 5 lbs, and usually are clothing items at this time for me. I like the priority because I can order all my supplies for free from the postal system and they are delivered to the house for no cost. Most of my auction winners do ask me to ship priority. Possibly for many people they want their items as fast as possible.
If you are selling large or bulky items, then I would think parcel post, UPS, or FedEx would be a better choice.

Thanks, Lori!

I'm so amazed at the number of hits this listing has gotten. After 3 days it is up over 1,000 views. AMAZING!!! If I had any doubts about this, they are gone now.

I won't post my ID here, but if anyone is thinking about using eBay Motors and would like to look at my listing, PM me and I'll be happy to share that info privately.

We were getting a little nervous actually, we've only had one inquiry, and that was someone who wanted me to end the auction and sell the boat for the starting bid. Umm, yeah, right. NOT. After I replied, I checked the ID, and it was a new ID of someone from Latvia. Hmmmm. I wonder if he thought we were gonna drive the boat there? Oh well.

Had a good week with my regular yard sale treasures (vintage metal travel souvenir ashtrays - paid 4/$1, sold 4/$10.... Collectors plates, bought 3/$1, sold 2 of them so far for $3.99 each... made a total of $35 on Cosmetic GWPs I got for free....).

Went to Cape Cod this weekend to visit family and hit yard sales down there - funny, they were either WAY overpriced, or incredibly good finds. There was so much big heavy stuff I had to pass up because I just couldn't fit them in the car, aside from the concept of shipping. It hurt, though - there was a brand new Fussball table - gorgeous - only $40... I had to leave it.... sniff :(

I'm going to wait until after Labor day to do new listings, or at least until Thursday - maybe do some 10-day ones then.
