I see so this isn't a thing you do with a companion or someone you care about because I took it to mean this is how you deal with your partner and family over everyday things.

I think it mainly applies to people that you don't really know? Like, why get all stewed up with a random DISer who you don't actually know in real life? Sometimes it is more satisfying just to blag your way out rather than get invested in some silly argument!
