Does everyone just book a room as early as possible and then hunt for discounts? What if the discounts never happen for your dates because all of the rooms are already booked?

Then I'll pay the rate I reserved at. I'm not going to wait around for discounts only to find my dates unavailable. We only go every 2 or 3 years, I'm always happy to get a discount, usually they do have AAA ones, but if I don't get one it will not affect my trip at all.
