You Best Start Believing in Ghost Stories...Halloween on the Dream | The End P40 8/15

I suppose a lot of people start off a report on their first cruise with some elaborate back story of what lead them to taking a cruise. Celebrating a big milestone or hearing the call of the open sea. Ours went something like this: [insert ripple dissolve effect]

Bambi: "You want to take a cruise?"
Me: "OK."

[One more ripple dissolve to bring us back to the present]

So, with that out of the way, let's get on with the story...

The plan was to fly down on October 28th and back home on November 5th, so we packed everything we would need for 9 days into our carry-ons and one large suitcase. That included park wear, swim wear, Halloween costumes and pirate costumes (for Pirates In the Caribbean Night on the ship). Lest you think we used some kind of industrial press to smash everything in, I'll should probably let you know that Bambi's parents live between Orlando and Tampa and would be accompanying us on the trip. Which reminds me - let's go back and see how that part of the conversation went.
[Ripple Dissolve]
Bambi:"You know, the kids don't get to see their grandparents that often. Maybe we should see if they want to come on the cruise with us."
Me: "Ummm...."
Bambi: "Not in our cabin of course. They can have their own on the other side of the ship"
Me: "Oh. OK then."

[Ripple dissolve back to the present]

(Sorry for all the ripple dissolves. I only rented the machine for the day and I want to get as much use out of it as I can)

So, while we are very efficient packers we didn't exactly have to squeeze everything we needed into those bags because we had some stuff down there and could easily get whatever else we would need.

So after throwing our stuff in the van we started the 30 minute drive to Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport. (They call it "International" because I think a plane from Canada once accidentally stopped there on the way to Chicago.) During the drive, we had one of those "I really fear for the direction humanity is heading" moments:

IMG00109-20111028-1148.jpg

Yes, that is a "No Smoking" sticker in the back window. And yes, that person in the font seat is smoking. We figured their was a better than average chance that there were medical oxygen tanks in the car so I hit the accelerator and put as much distance between us and them as I could.

As I usually do when we fly, I dropped Bambi and the kids off at the curb and headed to the parking lot. That way, we don't have to haul all of our stuff onto the parking shuttle. I crossed the street to my favorite FastPark & Relax lot - only to find out that they were so full that they were only accepting members of their loyalty club. Which I am not a member of. :headache:

I turned around and headed to the Airport's "SuperSaver" remote lots, where I found a spot at the far end of the farthest lot. I could see Wisconsin's capitol building from where I parked. (I guess you have to know a little bit about Wisconsin geography to get that joke. The capitol is in Madison, 90 miles from Milwaukee. Sigh. Anyway, back to the story)

As soon as I got on the shuttle to the terminal, I called Bambi to let her know I was running late. Her phone started ringing in my backpack, so I assumed she wasn't going to get that message.

A few minutes later I had arrived, we checked our bag (there's $20 I'll never see again) and were in line for security. The line was quite long, but I did get to go through the new zapper x-ray gamma-ray spinny scanner. I'm pretty sure I have super powers now, but I'm not sure what they are.

Either way, there we all were, shoes off, belts off, sweatshirts off, half of our stuff scattered along the rolley conveyor belt and feeling totally discombobulated. Luckily, the Milwaukee Airport provides an area just beyond security for just our needs:

3536495055_f3a4f666a0_o.jpg

(Pay no attention to the clock. My picture turned out fuzzy, I so borrowed on from the Internet)

Anyway, after paying $45 for $20 worth of food at the airport (Hey! It's like we're in Disney World already!) we settled in at the gate and waited for our flight.

The flight was mostly uneventful, except for one little thing. We were lucky enough to get 4 seats on the side of the plane that was 2 across seating. About halfway though the flight, the kids wanted to sit together. We'd never allowed that before, but decided that since there wouldn't be anyone else next to them to bother, we gave it. They sat nicely and shared Madison's coloring book.

DSCF1562.jpg

We landed in Tampa right on schedule. WAIT! - WHAT? We're in TAMPA?
Settle down, that's were we planned to go. Bambi's dad, Dean, met us there since her mom (Carol) was still at work. We drove over to the nearby Bahama Breeze for dinner

IMG00111-20111028-1809.jpg

Then took the 40 minute drive back to Grandma & Grandpa's house, but stopped off at the local mall for a Mrs. Fields run. Because when you want chocolate chip cookies, you want chocolate chip cookies. :thumbsup2

Up Next: We drive from Lakeland to Port Canaveral. With a stop at the Magic Kingdom along the way. (Oh, and there will be pictures from a camera other than on my phone. Promise!)

I think more places in the world need Recombobulation areas. I'm always discombobulated, despite not having just gone through a metal detector at the airport.

Aren't Mrs. Field's cookies awesome? I swear, those things would stay nice and moist through an extended trip in the Sahara.

Bambi: "You want to take a cruise?"
Me: "OK."

That’s how innocently it starts to be sure, but it changes immediately after the first one. The way it works in our house now is…

One of us: “When can we go back on a cruise?”
The other one: “The sooner the better… what can we sell off to afford it?”

It varies by day as to who starts the conversation, but it occurs pretty much daily.

[One more ripple dissolve to bring us back to the present]

Oooooo… nice effects.
smiley_spinning.gif

so we packed everything we would need for 9 days into our carry-ons and one large suitcase.

If you actually pulled that off… you done good.

Bambi:"You know, the kids don't get to see their grandparents that often. Maybe we should see if they want to come on the cruise with us."
Me: "Ummm...."

Careful… she wields the frying pan

Bambi: "Not in our cabin of course. They can have their own on the other side of the ship"
Me: "Oh. OK then."

Oh… you got off easy that time.

(Sorry for all the ripple dissolves. I only rented the machine for the day and I want to get as much use out of it as I can)

Effective use of “inviso-bucks” there

So, while we are very efficient packers we didn't exactly have to squeeze everything we needed into those bags because we had some stuff down there and could easily get whatever else we would need.

So you cheated.
Well… not really but we don’t all have relatives that close to the action.
Fortune favors the prepared (and the lucky)

That’s like the “International” in “Charlotte-Douglas International”, but I rather think the more interesting story is that it’s named for General Mitchell.

I got it right off… but then again my thought processes are a might twisted an I have way too much useless knowledge stuck in what’s left of my brain, so that ain’t sayin’ much.

As soon as I got on the shuttle to the terminal, I called Bambi to let her know I was running late. Her phone started ringing in my backpack, so I assumed she wasn't going to get that message.

:sad2:

Magnetic Colon

:lmao:
Who ever you stole that form…
You stole well.

Then took the 40 minute drive back to Grandma & Grandpa's house, but stopped off at the local mall for a Mrs. Fields run. Because when you want chocolate chip cookies, you want chocolate chip cookies. :thumbsup2

::yes::

Great start…
Now you’ve got me fighting the urge to sell an organ or two and go back.

Welcome Kristen!
I see from your signature that you're a pretty avid runner. I'll be attempting my first Disney 1/2 Marathon in 2013. Check out the link in my signature for the PTR/Training blog. Any advice you would like to share would be awesome!
Thanks!

I'm a runner -- the pretty avid part not so much. :rolleyes1 It would be better to say I'm a slightly-competitive-person-who-likes-free-tshirts runner. But that's kind of long.

Anyway, congrats on your upcoming race! Running at Disney is awesome and a good choice for first time runners.

The best part is wearing your medal in the parks the next day or so. Check out the WISH section of the Disboards for groups. Lots of people there with better advice to give than me. Enjoy!

Kristen

Look what a good brother/sister they are. :goodvibes

Hey I recognize that t-shirt that Evan is wearing.

Sounds like an "uneventual" start to the travel day. This kind of makes me scared knowing you.

Bambi: "You want to take a cruise?"
Me: "OK."
Excellent backstory! :thumbsup2:lmao:

(Sorry for all the ripple dissolves. I only rented the machine for the day and I want to get as much use out of it as I can)
Just don't wear it out. They might keep the deposit.

Yes, that is a "No Smoking" sticker in the back window. And yes, that person in the font seat is smoking.
:sad2: Unfortunately, that's not very surprising.

We figured their was a better than average chance that there were medical oxygen tanks in the car so I hit the accelerator and put as much distance between us and them as I could.
And quite possibly a better than average chance that if they'd have heeded the warning on that sign years ago, they might not need that medical oxygen. :sad2:

Her phone started ringing in my backpack, so I assumed she wasn't going to get that message.
:headache:

If it makes you feel any better, whenever I call my DW I usually get the straight to voicemail response. Apparently the phone doesn't just charge itself when you leave it sitting on the kitchen table, unplugged every night. Who knew? :confused3

I'm pretty sure I have super powers now, but I'm not sure what they are.
You only get the superpowers if you're bitten by a spider while you're being zapped.

Or something like that.:rolleyes1

Then took the 40 minute drive back to Grandma & Grandpa's house, but stopped off at the local mall for a Mrs. Fields run. Because when you want chocolate chip cookies, you want chocolate chip cookies. :thumbsup2
Pregnancy craving? :confused3 Or was Barry just hungry for some cookies?

Ours went something like this: [insert ripple dissolve effect]

Bambi: "You want to take a cruise?"
Me: "OK."

[One more ripple dissolve to bring us back to the present]

Ooooooo.... I love special effects. And deep dialogue.

[Ripple Dissolve]
Bambi:"You know, the kids don't get to see their grandparents that often. Maybe we should see if they want to come on the cruise with us."
Me: "Ummm...."

Warning! Warning! Danger Will Robinson!

Bambi: "Not in our cabin of course. They can have their own on the other side of the ship"
Me: "Oh. OK then."

[Ripple dissolve back to the present]

Whew, that was a close one.

Next time, park in my driveway. It might be about the same distance.

As soon as I got on the shuttle to the terminal, I called Bambi to let her know I was running late. Her phone started ringing in my backpack, so I assumed she wasn't going to get that message.

Yeah, I know that ring.

I'm pretty sure I have super powers now, but I'm not sure what they are.

The ability to inhale a cheesball from 20 feet away?

Best signage in an "International" Airport goes to Milwaukee. :thumbsup2

About halfway though the flight, the kids wanted to sit together. We'd never allowed that before, but decided that since there wouldn't be anyone else next to them to bother, we gave it. They sat nicely and shared Madison's coloring book.

Freeze that moment in your memory.... it'll never happen again.

Then took the 40 minute drive back to Grandma & Grandpa's house, but stopped off at the local mall for a Mrs. Fields run. Because when you want chocolate chip cookies, you want chocolate chip cookies. :thumbsup2

Hmmmmm.... I wonder what triggered that desire?

Sounds like an "uneventual" start to the travel day. This kind of makes me scared knowing you.

:lmao: A truer statement has never been said. :lmao:

Bambi:"You know, the kids don't get to see their grandparents that often. Maybe we should see if they want to come on the cruise with us."
Me: "Ummm...."
Bambi: "Not in our cabin of course. They can have their own on the other side of the ship"
Me: "Oh. OK then."

I believe it went more like...
Me: You know my parents could watch the kids while we explore Castaway Cay.

You: Good idea

And after we found out that I was pregnant it became necessary for someone else to take the kids on the Aquaduck because I would never go against doctors orders.

As soon as I got on the shuttle to the terminal, I called Bambi to let her know I was running late. Her phone started ringing in my backpack, so I assumed she wasn't going to get that message.

You said you would take the backpack while I took 4 carry on luggage, a suitcase and 3 "personal items."

Excellent backstory! :thumbsup2:lmao:

Pregnancy craving? :confused3 Or was Barry just hungry for some cookies?

I was not even the one that suggested cookies or dessert of any kind. At that point I was not even hungry and mostly the thought of food made me ill. Any food.

REcombobulation Area! :rotfl2: Awesome! That's even better than the time I got my GPS to say "impossible".

:cool1: Woo hoo for arriving safe and sound in Orl.....I mean Tampa! Great start! The kids are so cute! :goodvibes

Joining in for the fun! I can't wait to hear how the cruise was during Halloween. I'm thinking of either doing a back to back during Halloween on the Dream in 2013 or 7 nights on the Fantasy during Thanksgiving 2013.

I was not even the one that suggested cookies or dessert of any kind. At that point I was not even hungry and mostly the thought of food made me ill. Any food.
So in other words, he was trying to make you suffer. :lmao::rotfl2:

I just spent the last two days reading some of your other trip reports and absolutely :lovestruc them! The humor is fantastic! I'm so glad I get to read another trip report for your family! :goodvibes

Yay you started!

I'm liking your ripple effects plus your story of how the cruise came about.

I must of unknowingly took a page out of the FrozenMonkey's planing book when I asked Melody if she wanted to go on the Disney cruise out of NYC. It went exactly the same way. :rotfl2:

Awww... I'm sure you wanted Bambi's parents to come. (and I see by Bambi's response I was right!)

After carrying all that luggage, I bet you wished you just threw it all in your van and drove to Florida. popcorn::

How cute Evan & Madison coloring together... so how long did that last?

Mmmmmm.... warm chocolate chip cookies popcorn::popcorn::

I suppose a lot of people start off a report on their first cruise with some elaborate back story of what lead them to taking a cruise.

Others use it on TR's about their road trips. :rolleyes1

Bambi: "You want to take a cruise?"
Me: "OK."

:lmao: Put up a lot of resistance, I see.

(Sorry for all the ripple dissolves. I only rented the machine for the day and I want to get as much use out of it as I can)

I was wondering where my wayback machine went. Did you gas it up before you put it back?

Yes, that is a "No Smoking" sticker in the back window. And yes, that person in the font seat is smoking.

I bet this is the same person who expects a front-row position at the parades in WDW when they show up 2 minutes before they start. :sad2:

I turned around and headed to the Airport's "SuperSaver" remote lots, where I found a spot at the far end of the farthest lot. I could see Wisconsin's capitol building from where I parked. (crickets)

Her phone started ringing in my backpack, so I assumed she wasn't going to get that message.

Your deductive skills are as sharp as ever. :thumbsup2

The line was quite long, but I did get to go through the new zapper x-ray gamma-ray spinny scanner. I'm pretty sure I have super powers now, but I'm not sure what they are.

Sounds like it just took away your short-term memory.

Luckily, the Milwaukee Airport provides an area just beyond security for just our needs:

That is an awesome sign. :thumbsup2

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

That couldn't be a pregnancy craving. Pregnancy cravings are usually much weirder.

I think more places in the world need Recombobulation areas. I'm always discombobulated, despite not having just gone through a metal detector at the airport.
I agree! In fact, the next time someone asks you "How are you doing?" Instead of the standard "good" or "fine" Respond: Combobulated. :thumbsup2
Aren't Mrs. Field's cookies awesome? I swear, those things would stay nice and moist through an extended trip in the Sahara.
I can't speak for Mrs Fields, but I did find out what they put in Girl Scout Cookies to make them so good:

That’s how innocently it starts to be sure, but it changes immediately after the first one. The way it works in our house now is…

The other one: “The sooner the better… what can we sell off to afford it?”

How attached are you to both of you kidneys? I hear you only need one to live. :rolleyes1

Careful… she wields the frying pan
Had to check that. Wouldn't fit in the carry on.

So you cheated.
Well… not really but we don’t all have relatives that close to the action.
Fortune favors the prepared (and the lucky)
Not cheating - just utilizing all available resources. :thumbsup2

That’s like the “International” in “Charlotte-Douglas International”, but I rather think the more interesting story is that it’s named for General Mitchell.
:thumbsup2 For those that don't have the time (or ambition) to look him on on Wikipedia, General Billy Mitchell is a Wisconsin native and General in the US Army during World War I, commanding all American Air Combat units in France. After the war, he was appointed deputy director of the Air Service and pushed heavily for advancement in air power.

I got it right off… but then again my thought processes are a might twisted an I have way too much useless knowledge stuck in what’s left of my brain, so that ain’t sayin’ much.
I figured that of any of the non-Wisconsin residents, you'd get that one for some reason. :thumbsup2

Magnetic Colon
Better than nothing. And still better than Aquaman's "I can talk to fish" powers.

Great start…
Now you’ve got me fighting the urge to sell an organ or two and go back.

I'm a runner -- the pretty avid part not so much. :rolleyes1 It would be better to say I'm a slightly-competitive-person-who-likes-free-tshirts runner. But that's kind of long.
I like free tshirts too! Of course, after you pay the entry fee, burn through 2 or 3 pairs of shoes a year, etc it's not really that "free." But close enough for me!
Anyway, congrats on your upcoming race! Running at Disney is awesome and a good choice for first time runners.
My last 5k was through the streets of downtown Milwaukee. I'm pretty sure Disney can beat that one.
The best part is wearing your medal in the parks the next day or so. Check out the WISH section of the Disboards for groups. Lots of people there with better advice to give than me. Enjoy!

Kristen
Thanks Kristen! But I think that if I run 13.1 miles, I'm wearing that medal to work for the next month!

Look what a good brother/sister they are.
Yeah, they play well for the camera.
Sounds like an "uneventual" start to the travel day. This kind of makes me scared knowing you.
I have no idea what you are talking about. :rolleyes1

Ooooooo.... I love special effects. And deep dialogue.
We have plenty of that around our house. Tonight I plan on creating a 30' fireball in the back yard while the kids recite Shakespeare.

Warning! Warning! Danger Will Robinson!

Whew, that was a close one.
::yes::

I remember that flight.
I don't care how much Molsen the pilot had - I told you it was a bad idea to let the moose take the controls.

Next time, park in my driveway. It might be about the same distance.
Do you offer shuttle service?

The ability to inhale a cheesball from 20 feet away?
Nah, I've always had that.

Best signage in an "International" Airport goes to Milwaukee. :thumbsup2
First Runner Up: Chicago's "Tired of carrying around that briefcase full of cash? Chicago politicians now accept direct deposit bribes!"

Freeze that moment in your memory.... it'll never happen again.
What do you mean? It's happened 3 or 4 times since this trip.

Hmmmmm.... I wonder what triggered that desire?
Nope, wasn't Bambi. Grandpa and the kids wanted them.

:lmao: A truer statement has never been said. :lmao:
I still have no idea what you are talking about. :rolleyes1:rolleyes1

I believe it went more like...

You: Good idea
That may have happened as well.
And after we found out that I was pregnant it became necessary for someone else to take the kids on the Aquaduck because I would never go against doctors orders.
Riiiiiiiiiiiight. Stay tuned for the rest of this story.

You said you would take the backpack while I took 4 carry on luggage, a suitcase and 3 "personal items."
Yes, that I helped unloaded and kids helped wheel into the terminal. Still much easier than hauling all that stuff from the remote lot.

I was not even the one that suggested cookies or dessert of any kind. At that point I was not even hungry and mostly the thought of food made me ill. Any food.
It's true - it was all grandpa and the kids' idea.

REcombobulation Area! :rotfl2: Awesome! That's even better than the time I got my GPS to say "impossible".

:cool1: Woo hoo for arriving safe and sound in Orl.....I mean Tampa! Great start! The kids are so cute! :goodvibes
Thanks! And.....

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: I have got to hear that story. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
