You are My Sunshine, My only Sunshine
(Be prepared to get watery eyes!)

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They found out that the new baby was going be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in mommy's tummy. He was building a bond of love with his little sister before he even met her.

The pregnancy progressed normally for Karen. In time, the labor pains came. Soon it was every five minutes, every three, every minute. But serious complications arose during delivery and Karen found herself in hours of labor. Would a C-section be required? Finally, after a long struggle, Michael's little sister was born! But she was in very serious condition. With a siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the hospital intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital.

The days inched by. The little girl got worse. The pediatrician had to tell the parents there is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst. Karen and her husband contacted a local cemetery about a burial plot. They had fixed up a special room in their house for their new baby but now they found themselves having to plan for a funeral. Michael, however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. I want to sing to her, he kept saying.

Week two in intensive care looked as if a funeral would come before the week was over. Michael kept nagging about singing to his sister, but kids are never allowed in Intensive Care. Karen decided to take Michael whether they liked it or not! If he didn't see his sister right then, he may never see her alive.

She dressed him in an oversized scrub suit and marched him into ICU. He looked like a walking laundry basket. The head nurse recognized him as a child and bellowed, "Get that kid out of here now. No children are allowed."

The mother rose up strong in Karen, and the usually mild-mannered lady glared steely-eyed right into the head nurse's face, her lips a firm line. "He is not leaving until he sings to his sister" she stated. Then Karen towed Michael to his sister's bedside.

He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. After a moment, he began to sing. The pure-hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sang: "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray." Instantly the baby girl seemed to respond. The pulse rate began to calm down and become steady!

"Keep on singing, Michael," encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes. "You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away."

As Michael sang to his sister, the baby's ragged, strained breathing became as smooth as a kitten's purr. "Keep on singing, sweetheart." Karen begged. "The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you in my arms". Michael's little sister began to relax as rest, healing rest, seemed to sweep over her.

"Keep on singing, Michael." Tears had now conquered the face of the bossy head nurse. Karen glowed. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Please don't take my sunshine away..."

The next, day...the very next day...the little girl was well enough to go home.

The medical staff just called it a miracle. Karen called it a miracle of God's love.

I have read this before and still still gets me choked up.

This story appears to be untrue (see http://www.snopes.com/glurge/sunshine.htm) and I'm actually glad. I'm glad that in most hospitals (including the St. Mary's mentioned in this piece) children ARE allowed in to see their siblings. At our own local hospital my girls (ages 7 and 2 at the time) were allowed to see their brother when he was in the NICU (he's fine now!) anytime during visiting hours.

Anyway, here is my favorite sibling story (from http://www.snopes.com/glurge/hug.htm):
Kyrie and Brielle Jackson were born on 17 October 1995 at the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA. Each of the twins weighed all of two pounds at birth. Though Kyrie was putting on a bit of weight in the days following her arrival, Brielle was not doing as well. She cried a great deal, leaving her gasping and blue-faced.

Brielle was having a particularly bad day. NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) nurse Gayle Kasparian tried everything to calm her. She held her. She had her dad hold her. She wrapped her in a blanket. She suctioned her nose. Nothing worked.

Then, she remembered hearing about a procedure done in Europe. She put Brielle in the incubator with her sister Kyrie. Almost immediately, Brielle snuggled up to Kyrie. Her blood-oxygen saturation levels, which had been frighteningly low, soared. She began to breathe more easily. The frantic crying stopped and her normal pinkish color quickly returned. Over the next weeks, her health improved steadily in her new, less lonely quarters.

The children survived their rocky beginning and in time went home with their parents. When last heard from, Brielle and Kyrie were healthy preschoolers. The media attention brought about by their story and the now-famous photo caused their parents, Heidi and Paul Jackson of Westminster, to change their telephone number.

It is a sweet story, I tear up. I always feel bad when they turn out to be fake though. It feels good to hear something positive, but then you feel even worse when its just a story. I hardly ever read my sister's forwarded emails anymore because all of them can be just as easily found at snopes:rolleyes:

I was glad the twins story was real:D

I really didnt think it was real... does EVERYTHING have to be real to be inspirational? I just thought it was a nice story.
Thats why I posted it. I didnt care if it was real or not. Nor did I pass it off as real.
Just thinking of the possibility of this happeneing... just the thought that a little guy could have that much influence... just the idea of it all... gave me hope and made me happy.

Maybe I should just go back reading the rest of my fiction

Jenfur, your baby is absolutely adorable. I think I've told you that before, but everytime I see that picture I smile.

Thanks EsmeraldaX! I keep forgetting to shrink it a little, but it does make it easy to find my posts in page when I'm looking.

Binny!!!! You made me cry!!!!! Thank you for sharing that story. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hug my little girl. If she'll let me catch her, that is.

Jenfur, your baby is adorable. I remember seeing your pic before my baby was born and wondering if my baby would be as cute. I will say it's a tough call. :teeth:

Binny,
I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't an inspirational story or that you were purposefully passing a false story on as true.....I'm sorry if that's how it came off! I just noticed that you had "source unknown" and I knew I had read it on snopes.

And it just reminded me of the twins story which I love....that picture of the two little preemies huddled up and taking care of each other really is priceless!

(And so is your baby pic Jenfur!)

And it is inspirational, Binny! (Queen of the organizers!!)

That song always makes me tear up anyway because my grandfather used to pick it on the banjo and sing it to me. I think I was his sunshine and I know he was mine. God, I miss that man!!

Thanks for the stories, both of you!
