My son (6) has two loose teeth on the bottom. He's been telling me about them for a couple of weeks and I keep encouraging him to wiggle them with his tongue. Well, today he told me they hurt, so I looked closely in his mouth and there are two new teeth growing in behind them! This never happened to my oldest's teeth.

What should I do? Does this warrant a trip to the dentist, or should I just have him keep wiggling them? I can give his dentist a call tomorrow, I guess, but was anxious to know if anyone here knows what to do.

It sounds like they're ready to come out on their own. If they're not out by Christmas I'd call the dentist. :)

This happened to me, by the way (*cough* 40 years ago) and they didn't come out. So I looked like a shark until my parents to me in to the dentist and he removed 4 baby teeth from the top row. :rotfl:

My DD had a whole mouth of "shark teeth" her dentist encouraged her to wiggle them and they have almost all come out. This process has been going on for about 2 years. I wouldn't rush to the dentist, I would wait until the next scheduled visit and encourage your DS to wiggle, wiggle, wiggle

This happened to my son. He went to the dentist and the dentist numbed the area and pulled the loose tooth.

Good luck to your son. I'm sure this kind of thing happens all of the time, but I've had three kids and it only happened to one of them.

Shark teeth! DS had 'em. Had to have the old ones pulled. Later, he got braces forever and ever. That kid had the worst teeth.

But they look nice now.

I'd give the dentist a call, especially since he's having pain. Good luck!!

Thank you all. It was just a bit of a shock to see them there!

Over retained primary teeth. ;)

Now that I work at General practice, we don't see them quite as much as the pedo ofice I used to work at.

Tell your soon to keep wiggling them. Sometimes what happens though, is once those permanent teeth are in all the way, the "baby" ones firm back up, as there is nothing pushing against them to move them out.

When is his next cleaning?

I too had same thing 4 teeth - 2 center uppers and 2 center lowers. My parents still talk about it every once in awhile. As long as you have a dentist appointment within the next month or two they should be fine. Most dentists seem very hesitant to pull baby teeth.
