YIKES!! Chocolate frogs not really chocolate!!

850 calories in one! Yikes! I decided I wouldn't buy one when I heard $10, now I'm double sure I won't buy one.

yuck that's gross--I hate the way that fake easter candy tastes:mad:
I wonder if JKR tasted those like she did the butterbeer-bet not

From everything I have heard, she did.

I don't care about calories or toxic oils, lmao! I just want it to taste good. At $10 a pop and all the stories i've read. We won't be getting a bunch as gifts for my niece and nephews as once planned. Maybe just one to try it anyhow though.

actually palm kernal oil is related to coconut/coconut oil. At least this is what we have been told by our allergist to explain my 10yo ds' allergic reactions to anything with palm oil in it - he's allergic to tree nuts, coconut and they figure the relation to the coconut with the palm is why it reacts the way it does with my little man.

I also believe coconut is listed as a tree nut in the US where it is not in Canada - 85% of pre-packaged treats here contain palm/modified palm oil or coconut oil - a nightmare for us!!

Even though it's a bit pricy and not even real chocolate, I'll probably still buy one if just for the wizard card. ;)

I thought they were great. It is not so much about the quality but the novelty of eating a chocolate frog. My daughter was so excited to buy one. That was one of the main things she planned to get before we got there. So I say buy one just for the fun of it! You can always let the frog loose if it taste to bad anyway. (I tried it though and liked it.)

If it taste likes those chocolate bunnies at Easter, then I would love it. But hey, I eat at McDonald's sometimes, too. I don't expect gourmet chocolate at a theme park or gourmet food at McDonald's. If I want gourmet, I usually go elsewhere. I think it's the novelty of the chocolate frog that would entice me, not the flavor.

I'm a bit dissappointed though that the trading cards are just of the four founders of Hogwarts. In the real Harry Potter world, the trading cards consists of various famous witches and wizards, including Dumbledore.

I'm hoping that maybe in the future, they'll offer mini chocolate frogs in smaller boxes for a lower price. That way if we dont care to collect the cards we can still enjoy the chocolate without spending too much money.

it looks like i will have an extra 10 bucks now..
hmm, looks like i'll have to spend it on something else. OH WELL :)

Palm kernel oil is being used because it's cheap. Cocoa butter wholesale costs spiked about three or four years ago. Several candy manufacturers (including Hershey) and food conglomerates (chief among them ADM) started lobbying USDA to change the legal definition of chocolate to allow replacing cocoa butter with vegetable oils (like palm kernel oil).

Some candymakers have already started replacing cocoa butter with palm kernel oil and other vegetable oils. You'll notice if you check, for example, that a package of Baby Ruth candy bars doesn't say, "chocolate" on it anywhere. Instead the package emphasizes caramel and nougat. Even Hershey's has gotten into the act, with its Take 5 bar, Kissables, Whatchamacallit, and Mr. Goodbar.

Wow, I had no idea about any of that!

We just scan chocolate ingredients for anything related to corn syrup or colors, and that's it. But now I know even more! Thank you.

I just want to say I am very excited about WWOHP. I started this thread to let people know its not chocolate. I have 3 boys who are big HP fans and love chocolate. Plus we have limited souvenir funds so I like being able to make an informed decision. I don't want to waste money. I don't want the boys eating PKO and if no one told me honestly I don't know if I would have read the ingredients. JKR is supposed to be this big health food devotee so I would not have thought she'd agree to use something like PKO. None of my boys have allergies. But rather than spend $10 on a nonchocolate frog we'll spend it somewhere else. And just because people post something doesn't mean their anti universal. Some people do not like to use products like PKO its a heads up that all.

Well I thank you very very much for the information. I know very well that a person can be realistic about things, see the bad, AND be huge fans. For instance, it's a small world at Disneyland. First time I went back as an adult, I still LOVED the ride...the song, the boats, the dolls/kids in it, it's just one of my faves and always has been...but at the same time, I could look at the sad scenery and see the dust, I could see the drop ceiling tiles that had holes in them, I could even see dust coating the wires holding the things hanging from up above. I could see the bad while still loving it.

And yes, you would think that JKR would have used a good chocolate. Except for what the pp I quoted said about some hershey stuff, I still find a normal plain old hershey bar to be basically a nice bit of chocolate, and you'd think she could have at minimum just used that. That they didn't makes me sad.

Anyway, I really appreciate the info! I'm still waiting for someone to get the ingredients (not *recipe*, but ingredient list) of Butterbeer, and then I'll be all set. Bringing own chocolate and candies in already, since I doubt that ANY of the bright shiny colorful candies will be safe for DS, now I just want to know if we can have a butterbeer! :)

::yes:: Me too

... if I want chocolate, I'll get my fix by stopping at Ghirardelli's at DTD

Bonny-

They're gone.

Since when?

Ghiradeli's is still there. a Dis friend was just there. McDonalds is gone maybe thats the confusion.

We bought one chocolate frog. The packaging was very pretty and the chocolate itself is huge. Great souvenir or gift for someone unfortunate that had to stay home.
