By "taking a package", do you mean purchasing an internet package? You can get 50MB of wifi service for free for signing up the first day. That's enough to last me at least 4 days checking email a few times a day and sending a few messages.

Sign up for the free wifi on your first day. That should get you 1 or 2 emails home. Outside of that depending on what port stops you are at many of the restaurants off wifi off the ship so you could send a quick email while at one of those locations.

Yes make use of free Wifi at DI, or other shops that have it. You can actually ask the Port Shopping person which ones offer free Wifi and head there, I usually ask DH to look around and pretend browsing while I check then we switch up LOL

Be sure to check the guide sheet at Guest Services explaining how to turn off all your smart phone's background network activity. I saw one for iOS (it's two sides of a sheet!!) and I presume there's one for Android as well.

I turned on the network on my phone to enable one thing to sync in one app, and within a minute the phone used up 35 MB of data for email, photo upload, etc.!

I had an easy roam package with Telus when I lived at home. Your provider may have one as well.

I've read that the McDonald's in Nassau has free wifi and I'm sure there are places at other ports as well. I enjoyed seeing the RBC and Scotia Banks from the ship in Nassau. :)

Yes that happened to DH on his phone, but I think it was within seconds. We went yo see the technology specialist on our following cruise straight that 1st day. He turned off everything that was running in the background, trouble checked all was off (no aps, nothing updating) and only then signed up for the free 50 mb.

Where do you find the Technology Specialist? Did they give you instructions on how to turn everything back on once you were back in the US?

on The wonder it was just by Preludes. An area with small computer stations (5 or 6) and a desk for the Specialist. I would just ask GS where it is, as soon as you have a moment. Yes they do give you instructions on turning off and then turning back on. Very helpful.

The last time we sailed they had a pay per minute option. Since I was only sending quick emails home and checking that everything was okay once a day, it was cheaper than buying a whole package. I did not see anything about the free offer or I would have signed up for it.

The 50MB free is only offered if you sign up on embarkation day. They used to mention it in the Navigator, but I didn't see it in the Navigator on my past 2 cruises. They do currently offer a pay by the MB option so you don't need a package. The free package has been enough for all my 3 and 4 night cruises. Only on my 7 night cruise did I end up purchasing more data.

Actually on the Wonder (and Magic) the Specialist's desk is just off the Promenade Lounge. (Preludes is the area by the Walt Disney Theater.)

Can anyone explain how you sign up for it? Is it just a case of turning your phone on and going to safari?

Yes, just connect to the DCL guest, open a browser, and the redirection should go to the page to choose a package. 50MB free on sailing day, other options available.
Once you choose a package, you can log out and into it. If you log out when done, then the on-ship networking works but you won't be able to get out to the rest of the internet and won't use up data allowance.

Ooops sorry, thanks for catching that, I knew it was Promenade, I guess I was in the mood for popcorn lol
