Yet another teacher pay/union thread

Why all the "What should teachers be paid", and other such threads lately? Is there something going on that I'm not aware of, or is this just an extension of the situation in WI?

They are pretty much a result of the ongoing situation in WI.

I know around here all the talk is because of all the state aid cuts we are having next year! They are looking to cut any and all programs they can- gifted, sports,all music, clubs, go from 9 periods to 8, no buses etc....so teachers and admin salaries are sure being griped about!

Well, union public sector workers such as teachers have really been the focus of alot of attention since the recession started. I think some private sector workers feel that union public sector workers have been unfairly protected from the cuts that have been common in the private sector.
Here in California, union public sector workers have taken furlough days, but no layoffs, and no pay cuts.
I just know that at my company we cut pay 5% in 2009, after doing furloughs. Mind you, they laid off 30% of our staff in 2008. About 40% of our staff that were laid off are now union public sector workers, and they claim the pay, benefits, retirement are far better.

With all the States drowning many, not just WI, are looking for various ways to peel back their mandated obligations. Since many many organizations are unwilling to yield the States are being forced to look to their Legislatures for relief where law prohibits any other means.

This particular story just happens to be the one that caught fire but its just the tip of the iceberg various retirement benefits and other things of that nature are being scrutinized too.
