Well, union public sector workers such as teachers have really been the focus of alot of attention since the recession started. I think some private sector workers feel that union public sector workers have been unfairly protected from the cuts that have been common in the private sector.
Here in California, union public sector workers have taken furlough days, but no layoffs, and no pay cuts.
I just know that at my company we cut pay 5% in 2009, after doing furloughs. Mind you, they laid off 30% of our staff in 2008. About 40% of our staff that were laid off are now union public sector workers, and they claim the pay, benefits, retirement are far better.
