Yet another smoking question....

I hate the thought that there are places for families on the ship that are filled with cigarette smoking.
Familes (with children) are unlikely to encounter indoor smoking on the ship. (But smoking is allowed almost everywhere outside.)

The family nightclub, Studio Sea, is always non-smoking.

On the Magic, Rockin' Bar D is non-smoking during the daytime and early evening family events. Smoking is only allowed during the adult-only hours, later in the evening.

DCL really should make Rockin' Bar D a non-smoking club at all times. It's primarily an entertainment venue, and it's terribly unfair to exclude DCL guests who cannot tolerate cigarette smoke. (And before someone says it would be unfair to exclude smokers, let me point out that smokers would be welcome, just not smoking.)

I think the thing we all have to keep in mind is that this is probably a very special vacation that we are all looking forward to.

Any unneccessary confrontations could make it less special.

Let's keep the old Golden Rule in mind....if you need/want to indulge in any vices, just don't infringe on anyone else's vacation.

Let's hope DCL can be one safe haven in this crazy world where we all look out for each other's well being and happiness?

Great in theory, lousy in practice. Until recently, I was a smoker for many years. In the two Disney cruises I've been on I have experienced some very hostile behavior towards me for indulging in my former vice. Let me emphasize that I only smoked where it was completely within my rights to do so.

Be it the obnoxious next door person on the verandah or the alleged funny entertainers ridiculing those who happened to smoke, it was all uncalled for when I wasn't doing anything that was against the policies that are in place on the ship.

Now if it's acceptable to voice one's objections to things that they find offensive, even if they are perfectly permissible within the policies of DCL, then the next time I'm on the ship I'll have plenty to say about people who have no clue what it means to have manners.

Let me know, I'm sailing soon and would love to know what the proper protocol is.

The proper protocol is to realize that your (former) vice is inherently intrusive to others who are powerless to the amount of airspace it takes up. You may feel that you are being polite....however, if someone is speaking up, they are probably being affected by the smoke.

I'm not at all trying to be confrontational. Just very matter of fact.

I'm glad you quit, you probably feel alot better too.

But longterm health risks aside (and I don't want to get into a debate about the proven risks of second hand smoke)....being around smoke for non-smokers can be either a mild irritant, a noxious smell, an immediate breathing risk (I have 2nd hand smoke induced asthma ~~ life threatening), or a combination of many things.

Some people actually like to use their cigarettes as power tools to assert themselves, and their "rights" with. No joke.

The bottom line is this. It is a vice. It's not just something that people ENJOY picking on other people for. Have a little compassion for those of us who ARE truly affected by second hand smoke and go out of your way to be extra considerate. Your smoke travels alot further than you may be aware...and while you may be tired of the reactions that you get....be aware that those of us who are subjected to it against our will are tired of how it makes us feel physically, and tired of being yelled at about it.

Sorry if this sounds rude. I'm really trying to state myself clearly and unoffensively.

Then we're all lucky that second hand smoke doesn't kill.

The studies may tell you that, but you will never be able to convince me. My father-in-law was never a smoker. He lived in a small house with his wife, who was a heavy smoker. Through the years, several of his kids (he had 5) came back home and lived with him. All of his kids were heavy smokers, with the exception of my husband. When you would walk into the house during family get-togethers, you were walking into a cloud of smoke. We never could figure out how he could stand to be in the house with them. About 10 years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. A few years later, he died. Seeing him those last few days is something I will never forget...it was a horrible way to die! What amazed me the most was that even after he had been diagnosed, the family members still smoked around him!!! I guess they had read those same studies that say that second-hand smoke won't kill you.

Just my two cents for what it's worth. I think smoking should be banned in all the clubs. There's no reason why someone who smokes (and I smoked for many years including our last trip on the Magic) can't step out on deck to have a cigarette. There are many people who are extremely allergic to smoke and they should be allowed to use the clubs too. Stepping outside is no big deal.

I'd be more than willing to do so, if I could get a promise from all the parents of crying/screaming children to do the same when they start acting up. I've seen way too much of that. I find them much more annoying than any smoker.

In response, as a non-smoker parent who has serious allergies as does my ds, I find the cigarette smoke affects my health and well being. Life is extrememly difficult when inconsiderate smokers are around. Any second hand smoke at all causes real breathing problems for us. I don't think you are comparing apples to apples. Crying/screaming children just get annoying and uncomfortable. They do not affect anyones health or wellbeing. I think that comment is really ignorant and is not logical at all. If a smoker needs a cigarette, I agree that stepping outside should not be a big deal. Everyone wins in that situation.

I asked that this thread be confined to answering the question that was asked. It seems that every time that someone asks a question about the smoking policy, it quickly strays off topic and becomes an ongoing disagreement.

Since the OP's question about where smoking is allowed has been answered, and since, as always, this is getting ugly, I'm going to close it.

Thanks!
