I have been reading the posts about prom and let me say that neither I nor DH went to our proms. We could really care less if our DS's went or not. That aside, DS#1 is planning to go with a group, no date. Okay.
As senior parents we have been "encouraged" to sign up for multiple events all year, including the big one, After Prom. Both DH and I are involved. I am on the planning committee and doing the hospitality room for workers while DH is running an event. We have a budget in excess of $15,000 for this after prom alone. I think this is obscene. Do you know what can be done with that kind of money for countless people in need???
We have a circus theme. Lots of folks are using recycled stuff but they are building a huge slide for the kids to enter by. What? We even have a community walk through the Sat. night of prom. The kids are supposed to be there by midnight and stay until 4am. If they leave, parents are notifies. We only have 180 seniors and get about twice that for the after prom.
To top it off they are renting busses to take the kids to Cedar Point in the morning. Some kids had an accident last year and so the bus, which I think is good. I just feel this is way too much for these kids. Our prom is Memorial Day weekend to boot.
It seems to me each year parents are pushed into doing bigger and more expensive things for kids that really don't care anyway. I really feel we are sending the wrong messages to our kids. When we were teens the kids did the prom and afterprom. They took pride in it and had fun. Now, it is handed to them.
Sorry for the rant. Tired, overworrked Senior parent here.
