Yet another "how do I put music on my ipod" question

OK, here's the scenario. DD13 has an ipod and has itunes set up on her computer. She now has a friend over who also has an ipod. How can we:

1)Put music from the friend's ipod into my daughters Itunes library

2)Put music from my daughters Itunes library onto the friend's ipod?

I kind of need step by step dummy instructions because I'm not familiar with the software at all. My DD13 who is familiar with it is telling me that it will delete everything in the friend's Ipod or something...I'm not quite sure what they're talking about but I wanted to help them share their music if possible. Right now the friend's Ipod is plugged in and charging and they said when they plugged it in it asked something about putting music on it but they said no because it would have erased her stuff or something. So, thanks for any help you can provide.

I've tried to transfer my music from my dad's computer into my iPod, but yeah, I get that same exact message. I actually don't think it's possible.

I don't think you can transfer it. You have to burn tunes to a cd, then share that.

Jackie

Yeah I agree. go to itunes burn a cd from the friends music, load the cd to itunes and upload those songs to your daughters itunes. Or vis-verse

I thought I read something on here about dragging and dropping or something....

I can't believe that burning a CD would be the only way.

I know I've read on here about people that have 3 ipods in the family and they all use one computer to charge and load music. How do those people do it then?

iTunes is not set up to do that (they don't want to make it too easy to share music from one ipod to another). I have heard there are ways around it, but I haven't used any.

They can do that.
It won't erase her friend's ipod unless she does an autosynch that tells iTunes to do that when she connects it. If you use the autosynch option, iTunes adds everything to the ipod that has been added to the library since the last time it was connected. You can also choose to add songs to the ipod manually by dragging the songs you want to it. That allows you to control which songs get added or not added.
That's what we do - we have 3 ipods that all use the same computer and pull songs from the same Library. Our ipods have some of the same songs on, but not all (my DH would not want Hillary Duff, but my youngest DD's ipod has all her stuff).
The other reason we don't use autosynch is that we have some things in the library that we don't want on our ipods (for example, I put some Christmas songs in the library and will keep them there, but I don't want to keep them on my ipod all year).

Also, if iTunes Library won't let you share music with another ipod, check that the Preferences allow you to do that.
These instructions are for a Mac compluter, but it should work the same for Windows:
With iTunes open, click on the menu tab labeled "iTunes."
One of the menu choices under that tab should be "Preferences". Click on that tab.
The window that opens up should have some choices across the top. The one you want to look at is labeled "Sharing." Click on that one.
Make sure that these choices have a check mark:
Look for shared music.
Share my music.
If those are not checked, it won't let the music go to any other ipods.

Thank you!

That helps a lot!

We plugged in the friends ipod, right clicked on the ipod, and unselected autosynch and switched to manual. Once we did that, she was able to select whatever she wanted out of my daughter's library and put it on her ipod.

Yeah! :cheer2:

That was just what we were wanting to do. Too bad we can't do it the other way(from the friends to hers) but I guess you can only do it from the itunes library, not from the ipod so DD would have to get the music from her friends itunes library when she's at their houses.

Thanks!

I just showed them how to do this and you know what's funny? She did not have "share my music" checked and it had already allowed them to do it(I think! It looked like it did anyway)....but now it's set up properly.

Thanks so very very much!

Will the tunes stay in their Ipods once they sync them again? If the songs are not in Itunes on the computer it will remove them from the Ipod won't it?

No, it won't remove them unless you tell it to. They will stay, as long as they are not doing an autisynch and telling it to make the ipod match iTunes on that computer.

My ipod was a Valentines present with songs already loaded by my oldest DD and DH. Before giving it to me, my DD loaded some of the songs from iTunes on her computer to my ipod, DH loaded some from another computer and I loaded some afterwards from a third computer.
I got a new Powerbook recently and my Library is almost empty. I attached my ipod to the new computer and put some songs from my new Library on it. All the songs are still on it. We've done the same thing with all our ipods - they have songs loaded from Libraries on various computers in our house.

You can check by looking in the song list after the ipod is disconnected from the computer. The added songs should be on the list.

I also thought you could name your I-pod and that way you could do different loads with the 1 thats open with that name and soforth.

I believe naming it is one of the first steps that comes up when you attach a brand new ipod to the computer. Once it's been named, the computer will recognize the individual ipod when it is connected again.
I don't know how it works on Windows, but my Mac computer puts a little icon of the ipod up on the desktop when it's attached. The name is underneath it and (at least on the Mac), the icon is even colored to match the ipod that is connected (it knows I have a teal ipod mini and my youngest DD has a pink one).

thanks guys!

This thread has been very helpful!

Any other wisdom regarding putting songs on or removing them?

Thanks!

OK, this brings up a question. I know we have set everything on our computer and ipod not to do this autosynch thing.

DD's friend right clicked on her ipod and picked the manual thing for her ipod while in my DD's Itunes....when she goes home, should she do something special in her itunes before she hooks up her ipod so that it doesn't autosynch? Or did she already fix that with what she did today? What I mean is, is she possibly going to lose whatever she added once she hooks up at home? How can this be prevented? Is the autosynch set up in the ipod itself or in itunes?

This is from the Apple website ipod FAQs. :
Question: How do I transfer music between my computer and iPod?
Answer: iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes:

Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to iPod when you connect it to the computer.
Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to iPod.
Question: I have a computer at home and one at work. Can I update my iPod music collection from more than one computer?
Answer: Yes. When you first connect iPod to your computer, iPod recognizes that computer as its "home" computer. Each time you connect, iPod automatically downloads the music library stored on it. When you connect iPod to a different computer, iPod asks for permission before synchronizing with this music library. If you choose Auto-sync, iPod recognizes the second computer as its home computer and breaks the link with the original computer. If you do not choose Auto-sync, iPod switches to manual update mode, allowing you to selectively drag songs, albums, or playlists from the second computer to your iPod.

Synchronization occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your iPod. This means you cannot transfer music, automatically or manually, from your iPod to a computer, and you cannot use iPod to copy a music library from one computer to another. But, if you legally are allowed to copy music files, you can configure your iPod as a hard disk to move music files.

Question: Can I update more than one iPod with my computer?
Answer: Yes. Each iPod communicates a unique device identification number to your computer, allowing you to take advantage of automatic music transfers to your iPod even if you share a computer with another iPod user. You can choose to automatically update your entire music collection on multiple iPod players or choose to update selected playlists, allowing you to transfer custom playlists to individual iPod players.

Sue, thanks for your very informative post~!

Unfortunately, I'm still unsure as to whether or not DD's friend will need to do something in itunes before she plugs in her Ipod in order not to lose the songs she has copied out of DD's itunes library.

i understand the whole autosynch thing, I'm just unsure as to whether she has handled that by making her selection "manual" on our computer or whether she needs to do it in her itunes before she plugs in her ipod at her house.

Anybody know?

OK, I just went and checked out itunes and apparently she can't do anything in itunes regarding autosynch without plugging in the ipod first so that answers that question.

I just hope it doesn't do the autosynch thing as soon as she plugs it in because then she will lose the songs. I don't know how she has it set up at home. I do know she set it for manual on the ipod today so hopefully she's all set.
