Yes..as the title states, this is ANOTHER GC thread. ;)

Ok , my question is, is there anyone out there NOT seeing it for reasons other than purely religious purposes? It seems that is the reason for most ppl's boycot has to do with something to do with some sort of religious reason. I don't know, I can't keep up with this stuff. lol

It seems no one however, is boycotting it because it is yet ANOTHER Hollywood massed-produced kiddy fantasy movie. Ughhh... I am as sick of this movie formula as I am of 3d cartoon feature length movies.

Jeeze... I might as well come up with my own "blockbuster"!!

observe:
"COMING THIS SUMMER!!! Watch as a precocious 8 year old girl/boy with a British accent goes on a journey with a CGI created bear/lion/puma/naked mole rat in search of the truth/a compass/a mass marketed plastic toy tie-in from China available at Target . Along the way they will have many one line catch phrases in front of green screened scenery and be guided by Patrick Stewart/ Gary Sinise/ Steve Buscemi . Be sure to see the sequel because we made 5 already!!"

I didn't want to see it just because I really didn't care about it. Of course it was husband's weekend to pick the movie and I got to see it anyways.

About the fantasy movies, I guess I like them better than the constant remakes of old tv shows or old movies or the need for another Rambo, Rocky, Die Hard, or Saw 50.

I'm not boycotting the movie - I just have no interest. Not my kind of movie, especially with all the CGI.

Yes indeed. I have to say I am shocked and stunned by the fact that there is a live action Alvin and the Chipmonks movie coming soon. (Hey, "monks." Who said there are no religious movies out?)
Actually, as far as the OP, I'm just not into most 'action' films, either kids or adult ones. The only thing out I am interested in seeing right now, and probably will during break, is Enchanted, partially because it's a Disney film, it looks cute, and DD and I just came back from NYC.

:thumbsup2
I think you should get an agent and pitch that to a studio. ;)

Enchanted is a sweet, sappy, absolutely adorable, romantic movie! No controversy. Disney has another monster hit!

I don't want to see it, cuz I didn't like the books.

But I can't wait to see Alvin and the Chipmonks.

And Hollywood, PLEASE stop turning all of the great children's fantasy books (I'm a children's librarian) into movies!!!! Do you know how hard it is to convince a parent or teacher that reading the book is still worthwhile once a movie has been released!!?! AAAAAHHHRRRRGGG!

:teeth: Anyway...

Awww shoot...Well...you wanted it. ;)

ahem...

"COMING THIS FALL TO A THEATER NEAR YOU! A computer generated cartoon movie by some second rate animation studio that is not nearly as good of quality as PIXAR about a woodchuck/bug/snail/algae played by Adam Sandler/ Paul Riser/ Gary Schandling/ Carrot Top who's habitat is being destroyed by man/woman/corporation/the space aliens from The Simpsons . The underdog character goes on a journey with his friends who are unnecessarily urban sounding for being in the middle of nowhere and are played by Queen Latifa/ Lil' Kim/ Whoopi Goldburg/ Bobby Brown. Together they infiltrate the humans and teach them and the theatergoers to love/keep the environment clean/say really stupid catch phrases/ buy their children expensive catch phrase saying toys.

No boycott ~ it just doesn't interest me. :)

It will be nice to see an American film without the foul language that many others imply passes for normal, everyday vocabulary.

welllll....

technically, a boycott would be an organized or semi-organized political or religious "movement" of some sort...

it would seem unlikely that there exists an "anti-kiddie-fantasy" political group ;)

I am sure there are tons of people not seeing it just because fantasy is not "their thing" or the previews didn't look good to them or whatever ... but that's not really a boycott.

BTW ... although I'd be the first to admit there are plenty of problems with The Golden Compass & it's definitely not for everyone ... if there is one thing it isn't it is formulaic. The plot and premise are very original ... I'll say no more ...

DD and I saw this on Sunday. We had both read and enjoyed the trilogy so wanted to see the movie as well. DS8 did NOT go. I think the material in the novel is too much for a typical kid his age (too violent and too complex to really follow the plat well). The novel is aimed at older teens and I think the movie is trying to aim younger but really shouldn't be. I was glad DS wasn't there. Full disclosure: DD is only 10 (almost 11) and I think it is too much for most kids her age too. She is not most kids and it is appropriate for her.
As far as how we liked the movie, we thought it was good but not great. We both felt far too much emphasis was placed on showing off fancy-schmancy computerised animation (including many long, long shots with accompanying dramaric music) which would have been much better placed on character and plot devolpment. I felt the same (to a lesser extent) about Narnia. Seems more and more films are becomming "about" the world they can create through computers and less about the characters and stories:sad2: Not that any movie is ever as good as the book. But it was not nearly as good as I think they could make a film of this book.

I am not going to see because I don't want to. Those types of movies do not interest me at all.

I usually don't run out to see any movie. This won't be any different and not because of any religious or anti-religious views. I'll probably see it at some point because I like alternative opinions when it comes to religion. And, after all, it's no different than movies promoting traditional religious beliefs. Just another way to look at things.

Amen ...one only needs to look at that new Scifi mini series "Tin Man" to see that. What possessed the producers to cast that bland, one expression , lacking in talent actress as the lead is beyond me.:rolleyes1

Ohh..and I should also state for the record that I LOVE Fantasy/adventure movies. I am so geeked out for the Indiana 4 and Dark Crystal 2 movies it ain't even funny. ;)

However, like I said..I'm soo sick of predictable Hollywood formulas that once they find something that works (ie taking a children's book and making it into a feature movie) they literally RUN THEM INTO THE GROUND.:rolleyes1

jekajekalynn--thanks for agreeing with me:thumbsup2 It hardly ever happens that someone likes what I have to say:lmao: I have to admit I am not familiar with teh mini series you reference (we do not get a TV feed into the house) but it seems this problem is running rampant these days.
My for the reords thing is this: I have nothing against cool special effects. If they ENAHNCE the STORY I think they are fabulous. But they should never be the focus or overshadow the story (IMO). The Golden Compass is (again IMO) a really good book with a unique and thought provoking plot and good characters. The movie is okay but loses the moment too often by lapsing into the currently in vouge show off the effects thing.
