SAN DIEGO Flames tore through an Otay Mesa recycling yard today, sending a towering plume of inky smoke high into the clear midday air near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.
The spectacular blaze erupted near some parked tractor-trailers at Cactus Recycling Inc. in the 1700 block of Cactus Road about 11:30 a.m., the San Diego Fire Department reported.
Soon, a column of billowing black soot was visible from around the county, as the flames spread over bundles of reclaimed materials.
No structures were immediately threatened, though the fire apparently gutted several big rigs, SDFD information officer Karen Dalton said.
Engine crews used aerial streams to try to quell the intense two-alarm blaze that was still raging out of control in the early afternoon.
