What is with all of these fires? We do not get continuous news here, so I am wondering what you all are hearing. I heard there was a bad fire in RI last night, then a huge one on Staten Island and now one in San Diego. I understand the RI one was because of indoor fireworks at a concert or something, but what is the skinny on the other two, anyone know?

All I know is it is at a recycling center in San Diego near the Mexican border. I only caught a brief mention of it and I can't find any other info just yet.

Haven't heard that one, but there was mention of an apartment building fire in California this morning on the news, but haven't seen anything since.

And I also heard (on *one* radio and only once) that there was some other kind of fire in a chemical plant or something in Midland/Odessa, TX. Haven't seen/heard anything more on it, either.

Very strange day.

I haven't heard anything about a fire in San Diego yet, nor had I heard about the Texas fire.

Since it took me so long to find anything about this fire, I guess it wasn't a big deal. That's what happens when you only hear a snippet of news. Here's the story: (Thanks, Dan for the link.)

Spectacular fire hits Otay recycling yard

SAN DIEGO – Flames tore through an Otay Mesa recycling yard today, sending a towering plume of inky smoke high into the clear midday air near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

The spectacular blaze erupted near some parked tractor-trailers at Cactus Recycling Inc. in the 1700 block of Cactus Road about 11:30 a.m., the San Diego Fire Department reported.

Soon, a column of billowing black soot was visible from around the county, as the flames spread over bundles of reclaimed materials.

No structures were immediately threatened, though the fire apparently gutted several big rigs, SDFD information officer Karen Dalton said.

Engine crews used aerial streams to try to quell the intense two-alarm blaze that was still raging out of control in the early afternoon.
