Back in 06 for my "cough" 30th b-day, my wife surprised me with a guys only golf trip and a couple days at DL. It was the first time I had been back to DL in 13 years so it was definitely long overdue and I was stoked.
I got there and discovered that HM was closed for the conversion back to normal from the holiday theming. I hadnt ridden HM in 13 years and now that I was back, it was closed.
Here's the thing, I don't really think about it when I look back on that trip. Space Mountain had recently re-opened and was outstanding. Indiana Jones was a brand new ride to me since it didn't exist at all the last time I had been there. Neither did all of DCA for that matter. But best of all, My first day at the park (Which I was alone for since my golf buddy wasn't due to arrive until the late evening) was the very last day that POTC was open before the Jack Sparrow plussing. That night during Fantasmic, POTC was completely empty, and I don't mean that as a euphemism, there was literally no one on it. So I go on there and rode POTC completely alone as one of the very last people to experience it in it's (nearly) original form.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Jack Sparrow additions to the ride and actually believe that is is an even better ride now, but the original concept of POTC was a big part of my childhood and having a very personal way to say goodbye to the old version is a great memory will last with me for the rest of my life.
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. There are other experiences just waiting to happen. A couple closed rides will not take away from the overall experience. It will be a good trip regardless.
And by the way, when we went the following year for my Son's first trip, I got to ride HM finally.

That extra year to wait just sweetened the experience for me even more.
