Yet another census question

I know, I shouldn't start another thread, but this question is different. I've searched on census.gov and haven't been able to figure out an answer. I am hoping that someone smarter than me can tell me the 'right' answer without me having to wait on hold forever with the census phone people.

I just filled out our census form. No problem. BUT...there is a spot that indicates if you sometimes live at another location, and therein is my question/concern.

We own two homes, our 'legal' residence here in CT, and our vacation home in VT (where we stay maybe a little more than 50%). I did check off the boxes for each of us that says we sometimes live somewhere else. Was that right? When I go up to Vermont this weekend, I'm assuming that I will have a census form there...am I supposed to fill that one out too? Most likely we'll actually be in Vermont on April 1st.

I would call the toll free number if you are unsure. I have to call about my husband who is deployed right now. The way it is worded it sounds like they will have a census to take too but I am just not sure. Maybe someone is a census taker and can help both of us out before we have to call!

You should only complete one census form.

Your address for census purposes is your usual residence. "Usual residence has been defined as the place where the person lives and sleeps most of the time. This place is not necessarily the same as the person's voting residence or legal residence."

If you stay at your Vermont residence more than 50% of the time then you should be counted in Vermont and not Connecticut, even if you file taxes and vote as a Connecticut resident.

That and maybe your state laws are different but technically the home you stay in the majority of the time should be your primary residence.

No. Should I have? I don't know. However, I had the same situation 20 years ago and did the same thing with no fuss.

They ask you do that on the form-basically it saves the a trip to your vacation home to check out your answers. Nothing you can do about it now though.

I am having trouble with my census too. They ask for race and I am adopted. They don't have a choice for unknown.

How about "other" and write in American. That is what I might do. Unless (depending on how the health care debate turns out) I don't complete the form and write in "Deemed completed".

You are making the question too hard. Just enter the race that you self-identify as being part of.

I get that you are just spoiling for a political argument, but 'American' is not a race.
