Yesterday at San Angel Inn (review)

We went there on our last trip in Dec. The restaurant is TRULY one of our favs, and even when we say we are NOT going there again....we always end up there!!

I would highly recommend the "traditional sopa" off the appetizer menu...it is one of the BEST I've had anywhere!! But, anything on the menu with the "shredded chicken" is really good...they season it VERY well. My dh always gets the Plato Mexicano...and, it is a LOT of food.

But...we did have an adventurous meal there last time. We met a friend of mine who is a CM for dinner. We had not seen her for a long time, and we were having a VERY enthralling conversation. My dd (3) was being largely ignored by us. She was in a booster seat, which was sitting on a padded wooden chair. I hear her saying, "Mom, mom...", I turn to her and say, "Just a minute, Mommy is talking". Then, I turn back to my friend, and I hear a "splat", and then "gasps" fill the air from the other tables. I look over at dd, and she is lying face down on the CONCRETE floor!!! She had totally knocked the wind out of herself. When I picked her up, she starts screaming. I am frantically checking her head, face, etc. And, I asked her, "Baby, do you have a boo-boo?" She screams, "Yyyeeeesss!!!". I said, "Where?" She looks at me blankly for a minute, and then cries, "My little finger!!!". Everyone around us started laughing...and, I was so relieved (of course, mixed with feelings of, "I am such a bad mom!!!"). But, I saw two other families take their children out of the booster seats and hand the seats back to the waiter. LESSON: Those chairs are NOT suited for booster seats!!!

But, enjoy...the food is good, and the ambience is amazing...especially during the heat of a summer day!!!

For years I had wanted to try this restaurant but bad reviews kept me away. Three years ago I decided to try it. Had my Grandchildren and though they would like the atmosphere, we were not disappointed. They loved it. We returned in December with friends had a great meal and the best waitress in Epcot.

This restaurant is on my list of returns.

Thinking of taking my boyfriend there for his 30th birthday in September! So is it romantic but cool at the same time?

Are there any nice/other romantic but cool restaurants you can all recommend?

Sounds like fun-- San Angel Inn is one of our favorites-- especially by the river !

We will be eating at San Angel in for lunch next week for the first time. Thanks for the review! Now I'm looking forward to experiencing it even more!

In Epcot, that's probably the most romantic, what with the dark night sky, the volcano, and the marketplace - not to mentoin the boat ride.

Thanks for the reviews!! I love the atmosphere...the food...not so much but will return!

We were also surprised by the food when we went. We basically wanted the atmosphere, but I loved my Plato Mexicana (something like that).

And San Angel Inn marks another memory for us. We also had seats right on the river, and while I was finishing my frozen margarita (awesome!), our kids went on the boat ride. That is the first time they went on a ride at WDW without DH or me, and we watched our two "big" kids float by us as we sat under the night sky. Very special.

And to the OP, I just love that quote you have from Margaret Meade!

Does anyone recall what the vegetarian offerings are? My wife and son (eight years old when we visit next year) are vegetarians.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks for the review. It's interesting to hear all the positive responses too, they might just be enough for me to give this place another try.

The first time we went on our honeymoon in 1997 it was amazing, fantastic service and the food was also excellent.

The second time (2001 I think) the food and service was still really good, but it was a slightly strange experience because we sat next to a table with a lovely old guy with a big white beard...who claimed to be Santa Claus :rotfl2:

The last time we went last year it was terrible. We had read that it had taken a turn for the worse, but went anyway as we loved it so much. The service was terrible, the waiter couldn't have paid less attention to us unless he ignored us. The food was also really badly cooked. The worse thing about it though was the table next to us, which had five 30ish New Yorkers (3 male, 2 female) who seemed to think they were from Sex and the City. They spent the whole time talking loudly about sex in a very detailed way, despite being surrounded by families with children. They were so loud and over the top it was awful sitting next to them. In the end we finished our food quickly and left because I wanted to tell them what I thought of them and DW didn't want there to be any trouble

thanks for the nice review! Do you mind if I ask what was on the vegetarian menu/ the platter you had? We love mexican food but I'm a bit leary to try this, as I've heard bad reviews also.

Thanks!

Glad you like it, I find it incredibly inspiring! I received a thank-you card with that quote on it for a financial contribution I'd made to a relatively obscure cause...I have the card up on my bulletin board at work and it helps me keep on keepin' on.

To the people who want to know what was on the vegetarian platter and/or the vegetarian menu...I don't remember! Hopefully this little extra "bump" will result in somebody reading this and posting more info on the veggie menu.

We love it too. I love the atmosphere

I don't order anything fancy....Actually I could live on Margaritas chips and salsa....and don't forget the jalapenos ;)

For an entree I usually get a Taco salad with grilled chicken...minus the cheese and dressing and sourcream. I use salsa for dressing and don;t eat the shell...mainly because I ate a basket of chips - lol

Can't wait to go back

Do you thinik I could order chicken quesadillas for my dinner? I noticed that they are available on the children's menu.

Glad you had a good experience with it. We are planning on eating there in Aug. Just a question, how are the portion sizes?? Could you split something between two people?

So glad to hear a good review on this restaurant. So often you hear about the horrors of San Angel, yet being a Mexican food fan, I've always wanted to try it.

You've given me a good reason to finally give it a shot next trip. :)
