So, we flew home from San Diego, on American, last Sat. Connected in Chicago...always fun. We were delayed in Chicago for about 40 mins but no big deal. When we arrived in Boston, it was raining...heavily. When I got my bag...the last one to come out...it was soaked!!! Completely. Not just damp. It even had little puddles on the top of the bag. Thank God it's an LL Bean rolling duffle. The bottom was wet, the sides were wet. I 'think' that it somehow fell off th belt, onto the ground, and into a puddle. There it sat until someone, luckily, saw it and grabbed it...at the end of the off load process!! I'm not one to pack my stuff in plastic. Well...that may have changed. My clothes were really wet. The top layer was soaked, but I had put my ripped Mickey poncho in there, so that kept the major wetness from getting through. But, as I said...the bottom and sides were soaked as well. At least the gifts I had bought in DL were in plastic bags!!!! That wouldn't have been pretty! Every article of clothing had to be washed.
Looks like I can now be added to the club of those with soaked bags!!! I'll be packing more carefully from now on..perhaps in those plastic bags!
Just thought I would share my less than wonderful experience.

Isn't it amazing how wet they can get your bag? It's like it came by submarine not air. I like my 22" rolling hard case that has two waterproof pockets for that reason. I leave the dirty clothes in the non-waterprrof side and put valuable items like gifts and nicer clothes in the waterproof zip ups.

i hope DL was fun and you got some great gifts while there.

I pack all my clothes in 2 gallon zip bags. Last year we sailed on the Wonder out of Vancouver. My two checked bags are orange, so they could easily be identified in the bins sitting on the pier in the RAIN. I looked out from our balcony and my two bags are on the top of the pile of the hugh luggage truck in the rain.
When then finally appeared in the hallway they were soaked but fortunately everything that were in plastic did not get wet. Lesson learned.

I used to travel (in the 60s) with a military duffle bag and that happened a couple of times. It's amazing how heavy that thing got when it was soaked. I had a tailor in SE Asia sew plastic on the inside to make the thing practically waterproof. It worked. :thumbsup2

I generally wrap clothes and other items in clear garbage bags to protect them from getting wet...whether from the rain or liquids in someone else's luggage!

Sorry to hear that your clothes got soaked, but glad to hear that your DLR souvies survived!

In fairness, since it seems like none of you live around here :), it's entirely possible Our Esteemed Moderator's duffel didn't fall at all. That was one heck of a rainstorm!

Nope, hate to be argumentative, but....my bag was the only really wet bag there. Dh's bag came out with a few drops on it, but certainly not 'wet'. Nor were any other bags. It would have had to sit out in that rain (and yes, it was heavy rain) for a fairly extended period to get as wet as it did.

I'll be packing with plastic going forward.

And yes, DL was fun...albeit very rainy and chilly. Thank heaven I was in a one bedroom with a dryer!!! We had to leave the parks by 4pm and dry our clothes..then return later.

I had that happen at MCO when a storm hit and the baggage handlers had to all go running - leaving our luggage sitting in the rain. Every single thing in my bag was completely soaked. From that point forward, I pack all my stuff in a Ziploc XXL Big Bag inside my suitcase. Then I use the Big Bag as our dirty clothes bag once we're in the hotel room.

That really sucks! Glad nothing was damaged, Im one of those people things like that happen to all the time so I feel you pain. (horrible travel ju ju right here! )

Thats not cool. Glad nothing major was ruined. I never really thought about anything like that happening. I use a hardback suitcase, I imagine water can soak in around the zipper, but hopefully if that was the situation and it did fall off into the water then it would stay dry for the most part.

I'm glad to hear that you had fun at DLR!

Where it can really get ugly is when the color on the lining of the bag isn't colorfast, and the dye ends up transferring to your clothing. I had that happen to me once on a job interview trip; I had to go out in a cab and buy a new suit in a tearing hurry; a suit I really couldn't afford right then.

We ship our luggage via FedEx. Have yet to find anything water damaged. Course, I probably just jinxed our next trip!
