I am looking to add 100 point to my SSR current contract. I understand having the same use year makes life easier, but how important is it really?

When I limit my search to just my use year, the options are very limited. I do plan to use points from both contracts to go 1 annual trip each year.

If you're adding to an existing contract it already has a set use year, so you don't get to choose or have to stress about it. ;)

And for what its worth, i have bought and then sold 3-4 contracts to correct the mistake of buying a different use year. lol

Highly recommend staying in the same UY. Just makes things easier being under 1 membership number and being able to combine points without having to transfer between memberships. If you don't need the points right away, be patient. There's always something coming along.

Another vote to keeping things simpler for your future use by having the contracts with the same UY. There are many folks out here who have multiple UYs on purpose for various reasons. But planning and booking and banking and borrowing can get challenging enough some years without having to worry about multiple UYs and transferring points. It certainly can be done - many do. But it's an extra layer of complexity I have avoided and would recommend you avoid, if you can, when you purchase more points.

Do your future self a favor and stick to the same UY for your annual trip.

I'm very very value oriented. Therefore, if I find a contract that fits my needs point wise/ppp I don't care about the UY. That being said I only got two contracts and out of luck I managed to get them both in the same UY.

Maybe I'm naive and have this position given that I have never experienced the "nightmare" of different UYs. 😅

Now that I think about it my UY (Feb) is not the most convinient for my usual travel plans 🤣

My guess is that you have two challenges - 100 point contracts are relatively small & thus harder to find + matching your use year. Nevertheless, it’s worth waiting for what you want in your current use year. SSR as the biggest resort typically has the most contracts for sale, so I think the right contract for you will come along.
This chart from https://dvcnews.com/dvc-program-men...ty-of-disney-vacation-club-points-by-use-year is dated, but gives you a general idea of use year break down:

The more this is true, the less reason to bother with 2 UY complicating things imho, especially if your plan is to try different weeks and months for that1 annual trip each year.

When we’re deciding on a DVC purchase it has helped to look at the 2 furthest sides of the spectrum. We try to predict which are likeliest to leave us happy, and which are likeliest to leave us with some regrettable aspects.

Of course our individual circumstances play into if 2 UY is easily workable or not.

I had entertained the idea due to the same issues you described, and later decided against it because I predicted the frequency it might frustrate us in the future was worth trying to avoid.

Thank you everyone I will wait for the right contract in my UY.

While 100 is my ideal contract. I am looking in the range of 75 to 160.

Yeah I just got a taste of what 2 UY might be like. We have 2 different memberships and ran into the same big issue of not easily combined for 1 trip. Made it all much more complicated.

I ended up booking some nights on one contract, one night on the other, then needing to transfer points from the second contract to book another night on the first. This was at 7 months and I was also dealing with availability popping in and out some nights. Not being able to outright combine the points turned it into a hassle.

Normally we always use our BWV points at BW so it works out fine. Trying to combine to one room/resort is where our issues popped up, and exacerbated by doing a point heavier trip than usual.

I’m in the process of doing this now. I have four use years, and I ran into two unanticipated problems. First, I started the process of adding my daughter to my contracts to avoid probate down the road and it struck me that she would be inheriting a mess. Just because I don’t mind juggling the use years doesn’t mean the rest of the family will appreciate it if something happens to me. I’m condensing to two UY. Second, my granddaughters are starting school and we are going to lose a bit of our flexibility. I may end up needing to rent out points for the first time. *look away if you are easily triggered* 🤣 it’s very difficult to walk reservations with these chopped up use years. I need the points in a couple big buckets. My direct points have to stay in the December UY but I’m moving all of my resale into one UY by strategically selling/re buying.

I’m the person who bought two UY at the same resort to save $10-15/pt—enthusiastically do NOT recommend. It worked fine for about 2 years of careful management before I started hating that I had to transfer points and could only do it 1x a year— who knows what Disney might do to discourage transfers further in the future.

The good news is that I saved just enough that it will cover the broker’s fee when I sell to get down to 3 UY, lol. Then, I will have 2 UY at WDW (one shared with VGC) and 1UY at Aulani which is big enough to stand alone (200). In retrospect, I think 2UY is the ideal amount if you have 250 or more in each contract and can do split stays or travel at least 2x a year, but I have 2 direct and BCV in a 3rd year, and since I never combine BCV, I plan to keep it that way for a while.

I have two UYs and have used them on the same trip. I have definitely utilized four waitlists when I was indifferent to the points used.

That said, I wouldn't really recommend this unless you are traveling twice a year or are really trying to game your bookings.

There can be some benefit to having 2 UY.

go 1 annual trip each year
I was about to mention two home resort priority and four waitlists, then I see 1 annual trip... Therefore, stick with 1 UY if it's 1 trip at the same resort! I think everyone is aligned on this, which is rare haha

We just added a second contract with a different use year, I hope we didn’t make a mistake. We’ve been members for close to 20 years and we’re happy with our original purchase but we recently retired and our travel is changing. We were both teachers and only traveled in the summer due to school schedules and coaching. However, we’re now planning on taking two trips a year, one in the spring and one in October. Our original use year is December which will work nicely for a spring trip but we also want a fall trip and a December use year didn’t seem like the best choice since we’ll be outside of our banking window if we need to cancel.

Our plan is to use our original December use year for a spring trip and our new October use year for an October or November trip. Hopefully we won’t regret my decision because it’s a hassle with two use years. Thoughts?

This is how I (generally) use my points, works great!
