I hate to sound dumb, but what does the yellow band that Kerry wears signify? This morning watching the Today Show, Ann Curry had one on as well.

Those are from the Lance Armstong Foundation, Livestrong Bracelets. In support of cancer research I believe.

Many of the kids in DS's middle school are wearing them and they are now starting to wear the pink "Believe" ( Breast Cancer) ones too.

Yup, they are really popular around here. In fact my roommates practically killed me when they saw I had one. Luckily my sister bought a pack of 10 so we could give them each one too.

I am so sick of seeing these things. 95% of the kids who are wearing them are wearing them for reasons other than to support cancer research. They really look ridiculous.

I have to agree with this.
To SOME PEOPLE (not all) it's more of a 'fashion' thing then a belief thing.

Sorry you feel that way, Mr. No One Stunner. My entire family wears them from the oldest member to the youngest. We wear them in memory of loved ones who have died of cancer and in honor of my nephew, Boo, who survives! I really don't care why the people you know are wearing them as long as the money paid to the LAF goes to aid and support those living with cancer.

ITA. I think it's great to see young people wearing them. Many of DD's classmates (high school) wear them and the kids in the school in which I work do too. Every time I've asked any of them what they signify, they all know. To me, that's a good thing.

I have the "Keep Pounding" bracelet that the Carolina Panthers have issued to promote cancer research.

I just lost my mother to cancer last month, and my MIL died from it 21 years ago. My family knows exactly what the bracelets are for and we wear them with pride.

my son and most of his friends wear them. thye became hard to find so when one friend gets them they give them out to all their friends. DS and his friends have all read Lance Armstrong's books as well.

They're really popular here as well.

Even if some folks are wearing them as a fashion statement... the LAF is still making money to support cancer research/programs so it's still all good.

It's too bad they didn't realize how they were going to take off though. I think the wristbands are all on a 3-4 week backorder directly from the foundation.

Unfortunately some folks are now selling them on e-bay for far more than the $1.00 per wristband the LAF charges. Unfortunately, I'm sure those inflated profits will not help the original cause!
That does make me angry!

I wear the pink for breast cancer. My DD's wear the yellow ones which we bought in August. The kids in my daughter 5th grade class have them in 4 colors sold at the dollar store.
I bought my kids on E-Bay but felt bad afterwords that the money was just going to the seller as big profits. So I went on line and ordered 20 to make my donation. I know alot of people who want them, so I'll give it to them.

:D

Here's some interesting info that I got from someone I spoke with at the LAF: I asked how many bracelets they sold and the man told me that they had originally hoped to sell 5 million. As of last week, they had sold 15 million with hundreds of orders coming in every day. That being said, I could care less if people wear them more for fashion than for the cause itself. The money is going to a good cause. I only wish it could've helped a family friend who passed away a few weeks ago from this horrible disease. :(

This is unfortunate, I do agree many kids are wearing them as a fashion statement, but they all do know what they represent, and the money paid for them goes for research, and that is the ultimate object of wearing them, to promote the cause and raise research money. Just be aware and don't pay more than $1.00 for them or someone is taking advantage and padding their own pockets, and that is wrong.

I realize they can be a fashion statement also. I wear mine in memory of loved ones and honor of my dad who is fighting cancer now.

Last night at an ice cream shop, a teen-aged girl asked where we got them. DH told her that you can order them a wearyellow.com

At this point I was thinking teenager wanting fashion statement but she went on the say that she wanted to get one in memory of her grandpa who died last Dec. 23rd of cancer. She was really choked up remembering him.

Being a "grandpa's girl" myself, she hit a nerve for me and went out to the car and brought her one in & gave it to her. She was thrilled and thankful to have one. I hope she remembers her grandfather's love every time she looks at her band!

I think it is okay to wear a bracelet to make a fashion statement and also honor someone at the same time (to want the bracelet for BOTH reasons).
When I was a kid, I just HAD to get a POW bracelet like my older sister and her friends had. I liked the whole idea of honoring/remembering our soldiers who were POWs or MIAs and at the same time I thought they (the bracelets) were cool.
I still remember the name of "my" POW - Sgt. Raymond Bobe. :)

People ask me why I wear one and most don't know what it is. I told them it is from LACF and then I told them I wear it cause my family had 4 cancer scares and we all came out ok.

I wear it for preventive and early cancer screenings available.
