This may be a really dumb question, but is it possible to turn a yellow-gold ring into white gold? Can they "dip" it or something? Just wondering...I have a yellow gold ring that I love, but all of my other jewelry is silver or white gold and I don't like the mixed look.

Yes you can. I have my wedding ring dipped in Rhodium. I have to do it every 4-6 months because it wears off and starts to turn back to yellow gold. Just make sure you take it to a reputable jeweler to do it. My jeweler is awesome. It does not devalue the ring at all he says to do this since its only temporary.

I've been thinking about having my wedding set dipped in rhodium. All of my other jewelry is white gold. DH got me the wedding set when I was 18 and in the past 12 years, my tastes have changed and matured a bit and yellow gold just isn't my thing anymore (nor is the style of my ring, but that's neither here nor there).

My jeweler said it would be $75 for my engagement ring & wedding band and I'd need it redone about once a year. We don't have that kind of money in our budget currently for something so superficial, but if it looks like we'll never have the money to replace my wedding set (keep the diamonds, change the setting), then I'd probably go with this option.

My mom had her platinum dipped to yellow, we tried to discourage it, she went ahead....
Years later she actually had the set completely re-done
there is nothing like the whiteness of platinum (or white gold if platinum is out of reach ) to enhance diamonds....my little sis was given moms set....it is beyond stunning and someday when she is able to bear it, I hope she will wear it (shes single)
my mom never took her rings off, ever, until she had to.. for emergency surgery and her sad sad passing....she would love to know that my little sis has her ring :sad1:

I never knew you could change yellow gold to white! I currently wear my vow renewal ring (white gold with a sapphire) on my ring finger, but my original set is yellow gold. Perhaps after baby comes, I'll have the yellow set dipped so my rings all match. I prefer white gold over yellow.

Rhodium only wears off if you are really rough on your rings- like washing hands with them on. Taking the item on and off often..... I have a tennis bracelet that was dipped years ago and still looks great. I don't wear it daily though.

My wedding ring is white gold and the jeweler told me it may have to be done every year. But we bought a warranty so it wont be costing us anything to do.

My DH is in the business. If it's done properly it should last longer than a year. How much did he charge you for the warranty?

my grandmother always had her wedding set dipped, usually every couple of years. The two outer bands stayed yellow gold.

$39.99 for three years. And I would have bought the warranty anyways as it covers the stones. We almost broke even on the sizing alone.

:thumbsup2 sounds like a good deal to me.

There is no such thing as white gold. White gold jewelry is simply gold dipped in rhodium or alloyed with other silver colored metals. So as others have mentioned above, to turn your gold jewelry to white gold, all you'd need to do is have a jeweler dip it in rhodium.

What happens to the stones when they do the dipping? Do they remove them and put them back??

Rhodium does not affect the stones therfor the stones should not have to be removed. I am a jeweler.

Thanks, good to know. Is it safe to take these to a "chain" jeweler like Zales?

I wouldn't take it to a chain like Zales because they don't actually have a jeweler on staff, they either have a jeweler in town that they contract out to or send it to a center somewhere to have the work done. I really think it's better to have repairs done by a reputable local jeweler. I used to manage a chain jewelry store in my very early 20's and the jeweler we were contracted with was awful, I never let him touch anything of mine and I can't tell you how many times I had to take customers jewelry over to the much better jeweler that we had in the mall to fix his shoddy work so I could save my behind.

Um, are you all telling me my white gold engagement ring is going to turn yellow?
