The Foreward, or The Reason for the Pre-Trip Report

After one makes her family's ADRs right at the 180 day mark, there is a kind of lull. What to do with the time that's left until it's actually time to start packing? How does one stay in the magic?

She could continue to haunt the restaurant board & go back and forth in her mind as she reads reviews & drools over food porn, "Did I make the right decisions? Are we going to be eating at the right restaurants? If our 'Ohana ADR is at 5:20 pm, exactly what time will we need to be there to stand in line w/ everyone else?"

She could meticulously go over park maps & begin planning her family's touring strategy down to the minute. But that is kinda detail-y... and really not the kind of thing the girl likes to do. Hence, the reason for the name of this Pre-Trip Report. Which shall be explained later. But not here. Because that would be kinda rambling off the subject at hand. (Which is another thing the girl is good at.)

She could get involved in mug debates. Or pool hopping debates. Or pool hopping with a mug debates.

She could look at resort pics & imagine herself there. By the pool. With a drink. And she'll do that. But that can only get a girl so far.

There are really all sorts of things she could do until it's actually Time. Fun Trip things like planning her family's outfits for the trip, making cute little tip envelopes, shopping for all the little things her family will need for the trip...

On the other hand, she could be doing laundry so her family has something to wear in the 5 months before they go to WDW & other stuff like cleaning bathrooms, grocery-shopping, cleaning the cat litter box... But all that's a little too far removed from the magic.

Or she could start a Pre Trip Report.

So she did.

"Finding Nemo", or The Reason for the Title

"Fish are friends, NOT food."

"I'm a natural blue."

"You think you can do these things, Nemo, but you can't."

"Mine! Mine! Mine!"

"The sun is shining, the tank is clean, & we are getting outa here!"

"Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming!"

"Sharkbait! Ooh Ha Ha!"

If you guessed that the above are all quotes from "Finding Nemo", you'd be right! :thumbsup2

When our older DS was between 2 and 3, he loved "Finding Nemo". Adored it. His 3rd birthday party was a Nemo party. And we watched "Finding Nemo" over and over and over and over and over again. We had it memorized.

To this day, when we wake up on a sunny morning, either DH or myself will normally say, "The sun is shining, the tank is clean, & we are getting outa here!"

And the line that my dear DH attributed to me was "Yeah, yeah, yeah... something about tentacles. Let's go!"

In the movie, Dory & Marlin find themselves in the middle of a field (wave? mass? herd?) of jellyfish. Their situation looks dire. How can they get through all the jellyfish without getting stung? Marlin notices Dory bouncing on the tops of the jellyfish and not getting stung & figures it out. Only the tentacles can sting you. So, he carefully begins to explain it to Dory & suggests they have a fun little race while paying careful attention to the rules. But Dory is barely listening to the details & says, "Yeah, yeah, yeah.. something about tentacles. Let's go!" And she takes off!

According to DH, I am like this. I'm less interested with the details of something than I am in actually getting started with whatever adventure/project/conversation with which we're getting ready to embark.

Home remodeling project? Oh, please!!! Let's just get the walls painted already! Why do we need special tools? Why do we need to let the spackle dry for so long?

DH & I bought a house in which every single room needed to be remodeled. That was in 2003. We're still working on the house. And we're still married. But he won't let me paint. And I have learned to leave him alone. Because I get way too impatient with how long it takes. I mean, on HGTV, they're done w/ the room in a weekend! But, I digress.

My husband's work stories or when he tries to explain something technical to me? He'll see my eyes start to glaze over, & say, "Something about tentacles, right? Because w/ numbers and mathematical or technical stuff, I think I'm ADD. I hear him talking, but I'm not computing at all. My mind starts to drift. And, before I know it, in my head, I'm planning our meals at Disney while he's trying to explain the finer points of folding a fire hose at work.

I actually can be quite detail oriented. I make lists. And plan. I research. I mean, I made our ADRs at the 180 day mark, didn't I? I pack our children's clothes by outfits in gallon-size Ziplock bags. I have spreadsheets for parade times & EMH mornings/evenings.

But when it comes to the detail-stuff of how things work or the actual instructions or process... I'm all "Yeah, yeah, yeah... something about tentacles. Let's go!"

Which is one reason DH packs our mini-van. He has a method. And I don't get involved.

Anyway, this is a Disney Pre-Trip report after all, so it needed a Disney title. So I thought this one was kinda perfect. And I tend to ramble a bit as well... and it went w/ that too.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah... something about tentacles! Let's go!"

The Cast of Characters, or Who We Are

Well, first, there's me. (Or I, to be grammatically correct.) I'm 37. Which, wow! How did I get to be in my thirties? In my head, I'm still about 19. I'll be 38 when we go back to WDW in September. I was 31 when I first joined the DIS - hence my username, Wendy31. And my name really is Wendy. A Disney name!! When I was younger, I really disliked my name. I thought it was too trendy, too cutesy. I wanted a name w/ more flair and style. A literary name. Then I read where James M. Barrie created the name "Wendy" when he wrote Peter Pan. Up until his book, no one had heard of the name "Wendy". So I do have a literary name! And a pretty cool one at that! I adore my name being associated w/ Neverland!

I'm a Christian. I'm a wife to an absolutely wonderful man. I'm a mom to 3 great kids. And I'm southern. And kinda proud of it. I say "ya'll" and "bless her heart!" a lot. I've been a secretary in the Human Resources Department of a community college. I've been a cheerleading coach. I've been a kindergarten teacher. I like reading, writing, (but not arithmetic), spending time w/ my family, and traveling to Florida. I used to like eating good good & was becoming a little bit of a foodie, but, since DH & I started the P90X program, that's kinda taken the joy out of eating. Currently, I'm a stay-at-home mom, & we homeschool our 2 older kids. That's new. The homeschooling thing. This year is the 1st year we've done it, &, so far, we're really enjoying it & having fun. And I wouldn't be lying if I said one of the reasons we considered homeschooling is so we could go to Disney World in the fall. My favorite character is Wendy, of course. Or Donald Duck. Or Belle. (I would like Ariel to be my favorite princess because she's ocean-y and beach-y, but she's also rather silly.) I'm also rather fond of Jack Sparrow. And my favorite ride is "The Haunted Mansion". And "Dumbo". And "Soarin'".

Then there's my DH. His name's Jason. He's 38. And currently works in fire ops at a nuclear plant. We met at a back-to-school party in 9th grade. The theme of the party was "The Fifties", so when he met me I was wearing a poodle skirt and saddle oxfords. He was wearing cuffed jeans & a leather jacket. He was the new kid at school. And I thought he was a nerd at first. But he was nice to sit by in typing class because he always had typing paper and correction paper when I ran out. In 10th grade, he asked me for my phone number, & I told him no. But, along about 11th grade, I started noticing him. And loved the way he could make me laugh. And, during our senior year, I fell a little bit in love w/ him. However, he was dating my best friend at the time. And I was dating his best friend. Fast forward to college & we all went our separate ways. Out of the blue, he called me and asked me out. And I thought to myself, "Sure, why not? Free movie. Free dinner." And, that night, when I got back home I told my mom who was waiting up for me, "I'm going to marry him." That was in 1992. In 1995, I did.

And I'm very glad I did. We're still very much in love. And I still love the way he makes me laugh! He's a wonderful husband. And a terrific dad to our kids! And he's my best friend. He's the string to my flighty kite. And he loves Disney as much as I do! His favorite character is Baloo or Tigger, & his favorite ride is Rockin' Rollercoaster.

And that brings us to our kids! :dance3:

Our DD is 11. She's a bright, funny, shy, earnest beautiful little girl who's quickly becoming a young lady. At first, we thought we weren't going to be able to have children. And I had taken so many false pregnancy tests, that I actually ignored all the pregnancy symptoms because I didn't want to be disappointed again. But what a wonderful blessing instead!! Our DD likes reading, seaturtles, science, & American Girl dolls . She loves Disney, & her favorite princess is Belle. She also likes Tinkerbell & Minnie Mouse. She doesn't do the thrill rides, but she does like Splash Mountain & Kali River Rapids. Her favorite ride is "It's a Small World."

Our DS is 9 (& will be 10 when we go to WDW). He's an intelligent, quick-witted, funny, kind little boy who is also quickly growing up. After struggling to get pregnant w/ DD, imagine our surprise when we found out we were having another baby & DD was just 9 months old! DD & DS are 18 months apart, &, while the 1st couple of years are a bit of blur (I was either pregnant or nursing for 3 years straight), it's been so nice having them close together in age. They are each other's best friends. DS likes video games, Star Wars, science, and sharks. He's a Disney fan too, of course. His favorite character is Dumbo. He still likes to watch "Dumbo" & says the movie reminds him of me & him. :lovestruc He also like Buzz Lightyear. And he loves all the thrill rides! His favorite is probably "Tower of Terror".

And then there's the baby! He was a bit of a surprise! But he's been the best surprise!! This time, I'm really trying to take the time to enjoy all the different baby & toddler stages because I know how fast it goes! He's 1 & will be 2 when we go in September. He's a sweetie! He has a very easygoing personality (a lot like his daddy). He loves to climb. He's cute and funny. And a bit spoiled. And still doesn't sleep through the night! But I adore him. And his baby shampoo scented hair w/ his little curls. He likes books. Both reading them and eating them. And cats (but he doesn't eat them). And macaroni and cheese, which he does eat. His favorite characters are Buzz Lightyear & Woody. He's having a Toy Story birthday party in July.

I have an obsession w/ dressing us all in matching clothes. It sorta started w/ our 1st trip to Disney. Now, for all major holidays (and some not so major ones) & vacations & really anything, I dress us in matching/coordinating outfits. And, surprisingly, my family tolerates it. Even my DH. I love them.

Here's a pic of us from last June. We went to St. Augustine for the week, but drove down to EPCOT for the day for our "Disney Give a Day - Get a Day" Day. We took my parents for their 1st trip to EPCOT as well. (But more on that later..)

Disclaimer: This picture was taken at the END of the day. I'm not sure why we didn't take a picture of us when we 1st got there. Oh yeah! I was in a hurry to get Soarin' fastpasses! So ignore my hair (it was pulled up in a messy ponytail) & the look on DD's face - she was tired of pictures. And baby DS was not interested in looking at the camera at all! But do notice the matching t-shirts!

I like tentacles! I'm in!

Great start- I love your writing style!

My favorite Nemo quote, when life gets complicated: "Just keep swimming!"

Cool Mom

Thank you very much!! Our shirts actually have Mickey Mouse holding balloons from each of the World Showcase countries. On the back of the shirt, the Fab 5 characters are surrounded by Mickey Ears that have the countries' flags in them. Underneath it says, "It's a Small World After All!" A very kind DIS-er designed them for me on the Creative DISigns board in 2008. I'll have to see if I have some better pics!

Thanks for finding me over here! And, yeah, our September ADR list has been filling in the gaps for me! ;) (Plus, the kids' schoolwork has been tough this week.)

And thank you for your nice comments!

More coming in the next post! (WARNING: I ramble!)

"We can do that...", or How This All Started - Part I

So Christmas 2004 was over. And the winter blahs had begun.

And, in January 2005, Disney ran a commercial in which a husband and wife were researching a WDW trip online. When they realized it would *only* cost $1,000.00 the week, the husband looks at the wife & says, "We can do that!" And the wife responds with a happy smile on her face, "Yeah!"
One lazy afternoon while the kids were napping (because, back then, they were still young enough to take naps), DH & I happened to be watching TV when said commercial aired. And, upon seeing that commercial for the 1st time, I looked over at my DH & said, "You know, we really could do that." And he replied with a thoughtful expression, "Yeah, maybe..."

But let’s rewind further back, shall we?

When one calls Disney, many times the automated system asks the caller how many times he or she has visited Disney World. Back in 2005, I was able to say 3 times.

Trip #1 - My parents took my sister and me to WDW when we were young. If I remember correctly, I was about 9 or 10 years old, & my sister was about 6 or 7. We stayed at a Knights Lodge in Kissimmee. And I all remember about that was a mural of a castle on the wall behind the bed and the drunk guy who shared the pool with us one evening. Even though EPCOT was in existence, we only visited the Magic Kingdom. Of course, we thought the Magic Kingdom was Disney World. We rode the ferry from the Ticket & Transportation Center. I remember the long wait for the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride and being scared to death to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - which I rode & ended up loving. We didn't ride Haunted Mansion or Space Mountain, but we sat through the Hall of Presidents, rode the Riverboat, & climbed the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. Clearly, we were thrill ride junkies. I vaguely remember a counter-service meal somewhere and standing in the rain with a dripping Mickey Bar watching the Main Street Electric Parade. We spent 2 or 3 days in the Magic Kingdom & the rest of our vacation was at the beach. Because my mother was (and still is) a beach person. (I get that from her.) If we were going to Florida, we were going to the beach! Disney World was just a side trip. At any rate, on that side trip, my parents, alas, did NOT catch the Disney Fever. It was more like a “rite of passage” trip, a “Yes, we’ve been to Disney World” trip.

Trip #2 - My best friend and her family decided to try out Disney World when she was in 9th grade and I was in 8th grade, and I was invited to come along since my best friend's brother was in college and wouldn't be going with them. On this trip, we stayed at a Downtown Disney hotel - maybe the Sheraton? All I remember is a really cool pool. And we visited both the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. Space Mountain was being worked on while we there, so I didn't ride it on this trip either. We ate at the Garden Grill in EPCOT (although, I don't remember if it was called that or not...). There were no characters, but the restaurant revolved & I had my first filet mignon there. We also ate at the Crystal Palace in the MK. But, then it was just a buffet set up sort of cafeteria-style, if I'm remembering correctly. Actually, I really don’t remember much about this trip either. I was so shy, I spent the majority of my trip worrying about either doing or saying something wrong.

Curiously, what I do remember about both trips is not a lot of characters. I’m sure we watched some shows, but I don’t remember any character interactions. And I don’t remember any characters walking around. Just some rides. And a Mickey Bar or two. With my parents, I watched the nighttime parade at the MK. W/ my best friend’s family, I saw the afternoon parade – I think it was the Easter Parade. But no fireworks. Or IllumiNations. Needless to say, while both of those Disney World trips were nice, they were also akin in my mind to Six Flags or Opryland (back when it was an amusement park) or Silver Dollar City (the name before Dolly Parton took over).

Oh, but then came Trip #3.

"We can do that...", or How This All Started - Part II

Trip #3 – I was a senior in high school in 1991. The first Gulf War was also, coincidentally, in 1991. Historically, in our small Christian school, high school seniors took their senior trips to Washington, D.C. & New York City. However, since there was a war, many of the typical tourist destinations in those two cities had been closed to the public. Which was fine with us. Not the war. But, rather, the Washington Monument being closed. Seniors were required to raise the money needed for their senior trips. Let’s just say that the traditional trip to Washington, D.C. & New York City was an expensive one, and our class was not that talented when it came to raising money. We had used all our money on the previous year’s Junior/Senior Banquet. So, during our Senior Year, we needed to both raise all the money needed for our Senior Trip AND the money needed for our Graduation Reception. So our parents consulted with our homeroom sponsor who, in turn, consulted with the school administration and told them that, while we could make the trip to Washington, D.C. & New York City, we wouldn’t really be able to see anything once we got there. And a road trip from Tennessee is kind of a long one to make just to stand and point at the attractions. At some point, Florida was brought up. But there’s swimming in Florida! (We were a Christian school, remember – boys and girls don’t swim together!) And the Senior Trips are supposed to be educational! But, oh, there’s other stuff besides swimming in Florida, and lots of it is educational, our parents and homeroom sponsor countered. In the end, my mom consulted with her travel agent, and, pretty soon, we were raising funds for a trip to Florida – St. Augustine and the Kennedy Space Center for the educational portions and Disney World for the fun (and educational) portion with a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp thrown in for good measure.

We were all very excited! Who needs Washington, D.C. & New York City when you can have Florida and Disney World!?

In April 1991, we embarked on our journey. And, to this day, it’s still one of my favorite road trips! Not all of our class went on the trip, so we had a rather small group – our sponsor, his wife, 4 girls (including me) and 3 guys. We and our luggage all fit in one of those 15 passenger vans. Jason, who was then “a friend” (but who is now my DH) was one of the guys. So was my then boyfriend who was Jason’s best friend. Confused yet? Jason was, at the time, dating my best friend who was in her 1st year of college. The girl w/ whom I hung around on this trip had a crush on Jason – as did I (but my mine was secret since I had a boyfriend). You know the Taylor Swift song, "You Belong With Me"? That was how I felt about me and Jason, except I was a cheerleader. Oh, the beauty of high school teenaged drama!

Anyway, for the first leg of the journey, we stopped in St. Augustine to eat lunch and to look at the fort (Castillo de San Marcos) and to solemnly ponder the educational benefits of said fort.

Next to Disney World, St. Augustine is my favorite place in the entire world. As I said previously, my mom is a beach person. We took family vacations to the beach every summer. And, when I was in about 6th or 7th grade, we discovered St. Augustine and started going there every summer. After Jason & I got married, I introduced him to the lovely St. Augustine. He fell in love as well, and we have been going almost every year as well. One of my main regrets in life is that we didn’t get married on the beach in St. Augustine. Even when we go to Disney World, we usually stop for a night or two in St. Augustine.

As an aside, I love the beach! And Florida! My wish is for us to move to Florida. Our house is currently decorated in a beach cottage theme. I told our DD and DS that they could decorate their rooms however they wanted as long as it related to the beach – so DD has a mermaid/seaturtle/seashell room, & DS has a shark room. My mom’s family is from northern Alabama, & my dad’s family is from northern Georgia. But, somehow, there’s Florida in my blood. I love the salty tang in the air and how it sticks to your skin. I love the palm trees and the sand on the side of the roads. I love the heavy heat that makes you feel like you’re in an oven. I adore sitting in my beach chair with a good book while the waves gently lap at my feet. I love the pelicans and the alligators. And the Spanish moss that spookily hangs from the trees. There is something about the ocean waves crashing on the shore that sings in my heart.

And, yes, while I’m from Tennessee and root for the Tennessee Volunteers, I also, much to the chagrin of my DH, root for the Florida Gators. They’re Florida!

Anyway, by the time I was a senior in high school, I felt like an expert on St. Augustine and the beach. So, when we stopped at the ocean on our way to Central Florida, that’s why I almost drowned. Because I thought I knew what I was doing. (Isn’t that the way most things work?)

On our way out of town, we stopped to “wade” in the ocean. Remember – the “boys & girls don’t swim together” thing. Well, our homeroom sponsor and his wife were not as strict as some of the other teachers, so they had a tendency to let us have our fun – as long we were behaving reasonably. Due to the “no swimming” clause, we had shorts and shirts over our swimsuits. And, eventually, the “wading” became “swimming”. And, eventually, I was trying to body-surf. I boogie-boarded every summer, so I thought I knew what I was doing. Of course, my mom wasn’t there to do the mom thing – “You’re getting too far out!” And I didn’t have a boogie board because we were supposed to be just wading. So, eventually, I was about chest-deep without a boogie board to keep me afloat. I’m about 5 foot, and, back then, I weighed 98 lbs. So, when a wave came, it was over my head. And it was high tide.

And, then I found myself in my first riptide.

With every wave that came in, the further out I got. While I had boogie-boarded and could swim, I wasn’t what one would call a strong swimmer by any stretch of the imagination. I was both literally and figuratively in over my head. Jason, who again was then just a friend (but whom I secretly adored) was on the shore watching me drown. My then boyfriend was in the water w/ me. He was not quite caught up in the riptide and knew I was in trouble, so he reached out his hand to me and said, “Take my hand.”

That was against the rules.

There was to be no “contact” between boys and girls. It was the rule. And I was good girl who always followed the rules. (In fact, as I tell my own children proudly, I managed to graduate from high school both as the valedictorian and as someone who never received any demerits in all 6 years of junior and high school.)

So, when he said, “Take my hand.” I replied while choking on the saltwater, “I can’t!”

He swam closer to me, reached out his hand AGAIN, and yelled, “Get my hand!”

Every time a wave came, I was underwater. And floundering. In between the waves crashing over my head, I tried to explain to him, “It’s..” [wave over my head] “… against…” [wave over my head] “… the…” [wave over my head] “… rules!”

In the midst of our danger, he laughed!

I could see our sponsor and his wife standing on the shore yelling something to us. In my weird, befuddled state of mind, I thought they were saying, “Get away from him!” (The sponsor and his wife also happened to be the parents of my boyfriend.)

I later learned they were actually yelling, “Grab his hand!”

By this time, my boyfriend was in almost as much trouble as me, & I had managed to swallow half of the ocean. (That comes into play later.) A rather ferocious wave slapped me in the side of the head and knocked some sense back into me, and I finally (desperately) reached for his hand. Forget the rules!

And we eventually made our way out of the riptide and back to shore, gasping and choking and dripping. Where Jason promptly scolds me, “What were you thinking?” ‘Cause even then, ya’ll, he cared.

20 years later, whenever we all get together, everyone laughs at me almost drowning because I was afraid to break the rules.

I guess that was all to say, you’ll never see me reusing my refillable mug!

Later that day, we stopped at a Dairy Queen where, standing in the parking lot behind the restaurant, I promptly threw up all the saltwater I had swallowed.

After we checked into our 3-bedroom condo (the Caribbean Villa Condominiums in Kissimmee), the rest of the class went to supper and to do some shopping. Since I still wasn’t feeling well, my friend and I stayed behind. The next day, we completed the second leg of the educational portion of our trip – Kennedy Space Center. Which was actually kind of cool. I remember the circular movie thing was really cool.

Then the next day… we went to Disney World!

We had a 4-day parkhopper ticket – then costing a total $111.00. Disney Studios (which was then MGM Studios) had just opened, so we planned to spend 1 day at each park and then parkhop on our last day.

And it was here that I caught the fever. And lost my mind.

Upon arriving in the Magic Kingdom and receiving my first park map, something came over me. As I looked through the park brochure, I remember thinking to myself, “We have to see it all.”

All through our high school years, in everyone’s yearbooks, I had always written, “Can’t wait ‘til our Senior Trip!” And, now, here we were… On our Senior Trip. In Disney World.

I was Vice President of our class. My boyfriend was the President, and Jason was the Class Secretary. At that moment on Main Street, I appointed myself “Senior Trip Tour Guide”. I had never heard of The Unofficial Guide or anything else like it. But, somehow, I knew… there was a right way to do Disney, and there was a wrong way to do Disney.

And we were doing it the right way, so help me, God.

My friend, the three guys, and I were in a group together, and the other two girls went with the sponsor and his wife. So I only had 4 people (besides myself) to convince that there was a “right way” to do Disney.

And, basically, my “right way” was to see everything. Even if it was something as lame as The Swiss Family Robinson Tree. We were doing it. And, yes, everyone was riding the Carrousel. And Dumbo. And It’s a Small World.

Surprisingly, they were inclined to acquiesce to my requests (demands).

So, with park brochures in hand, I proceeded to lead the way through the World. If I felt we were lingering too long at any one thing, I moved us along, helpfully calling out things like, "Next stop - Italy!" Even if we were only going to be able to watch 2 minutes of a show, we had to stop, so I could mark it off our list. I was insufferable. And I'm not sure how anyone put up with me.

Oh, there were some setbacks. My boyfriend and I fought all the way through the World. (It was probably on this trip that I decided that maybe things weren’t going to work out between us… his risking his life to save me from drowning, notwithstanding.) No one liked my idea of visiting every country in the World Showcase just so we could say we did. The picture of us standing in Mexico is hilarious… we all have different looks of frustration on our faces. We didn’t have money for table service restaurants. My boyfriend, who has a crowd phobia, had a panic attack in Frontierland in front of the parade that I insisted we watch for a minute. My friend and I decided that the tour guide on the Backlot Tour in MGM was too cute for just 1 ride, so we had to ride it twice. Three times maybe. And then, because we were sick of the guys, we took off on our own, and she convinced me that it would be fun to ride the monorail around and around the Magic Kingdom loop.

And then there was the ice cream.

On the day we went to EPCOT, the boys got hungry and wanted a snack. A Mickey Bar sounded good. But I had read the brochure! I knew there was an ice cream shop in France, and I thought it would be just lovely to have an ice cream treat in France. So I made us wait until we finally reached France for our ice cream. Only to discover that this particular restaurant was by reservation only. I had neglected to read that portion of the brochure. And, by this time, it was time to meet our sponsor. So we didn’t get ice cream in EPCOT. The next day, we were at MGM. And the line to see the Indiana Jones show was really long. Really, really long. And really, really hot. Somehow, my friend and I convinced the three guys to stand in line while we went and “rested” out of the sun. By “rested”, I mean we went and found a lovely ice cream shop and had a yummy hot fudge sundae. When we were through, we met back up with the guys and only had about 5 minutes to wait. My boyfriend was not pleased and complained while Jason just laughed.

Because we had not budgeted for table service restaurants, every night we ate outside of Disney World. One night it was a buffet (kind of like a Ryan’s), one night a Chinese restaurant, and one night we tried to eat at the Hard Rock Café. Except it was so crowded, we just bought t-shirts, Jason saved our sponsor’s wife from a drunken reveler, and we found somewhere else to eat.

We also took turns swimming in the condo’s pool. One night, when it was the boys’ turn to swim, my friend and I went walking around the complex. The guys finished swimming, and Jason realized we weren’t at the condo. So he came looking for us. After he found us, my friend walked back to the condo with some of the others, and Jason stayed behind to try to explain to me the dangers of walking around by ourselves in an area about which we knew nothing. I'll say it again - even then, he cared. (Of course, then, I was not impressed with what I thought was a very chauvanistic attitude and even asked him,"Why do you care?" to which he replied before stomping off, "I just do!")

However, even though we didn’t eat at any of the WDW restaurants (except for counter service) and stayed off-site, I finally got it.

I found myself completely enamored with the magic of Disney World. Our entire group saw IllumiNations… in the rain, standing in our Mickey ponchos. We rode all the rides. Like the sky-ride over the Magic Kingdom and some ride sponsored by Delta that I remember thinking was really neat. And I finally got to ride Space Mountain and the Haunted Mansion! We rode the monorail and whizzed through the Contemporary Resort. I walked down Main Street at night with all the lights. We met Mickey and Minnie dressed in their futuristic spacegear outside of Spaceship Earth and saw Minnie again at MGM. Jason and the other guy in our group got to be the “extras” on the Backlot Tour show at the beginning of the ride. I bought Minnie Ears, a tissue paper flower from Mexico, a Gone with the Wind Poster from MGM, and my first Mickey watch. There were times throughout each of our days in Walt Disney World where I would stop everyone and say, “Ya’ll, we’re actually in Disney World!”

But my favorite part of Trip #3? On our last day, we parkhopped and visited all three parks. By the time, we got to the Magic Kingdom for the last time, my boyfriend and I were sick of each other. When we came to the Haunted Mansion, my friend suggested that we mix things up a bit and ride with different people – she was hoping to ride with Jason. Jason, on the other hand, did not like her at all. So he arranged things in such a way that I ended up riding Haunted Mansion with him. My boyfriend was mad. My friend was mad. I was on cloud nine.

To this day, Haunted Mansion is my favorite ride.

Love that you already have so many fond memories of Disney World! :thumbsup2 Hope you manage to make loads more.

My fav was the last one where Jason chose to ride HM with you...no wonder it's your favourite ride!

Love your backstory! Especially the interesting love triangle. Well, sounds more like a square since there are 4 of you involved.

My first trip to WDW/EPCOT was my high school graduation trip with my boyfriend Mark, who is now my husband. We loved it! Still do! It is a whole different world experiencing Disney with kids, but we had 3-4 trips to the world as a couple before they were born.

It is also neat hearing about your recollections of things that have changed/gone away. My husband remembers eating at CP when it was cafeteria style. I remember the Delta thing- I think it was called "If you had wings" and maybe was where Buzz Lightyear is now at MK.

Looking forward to more!
